BIZARRO WINS GENESIS AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING CARTOON

Animal Rights Advocacy Group Pays Tribute to Cartoonist Dan Piraro

(For Immediate Release - New York, NY) Bizarro, the popular comic strip created by cartoonist Dan Piraro, has been awarded the 18th Annual Genesis Award for Outstanding Cartoon. The award was presented by The Humane Society of United States’ Hollywood Office at a ceremony in Beverly Hills, Calif., on Saturday, March 20, 2004.

Every year, the Genesis Awards pay tribute to the major news and entertainment media for producing outstanding works that raise public understanding of animal issues. Genesis Awards are presented annually at a star-studded ceremony drawing representatives from the media, entertainment, social, business and humane communities. The taped event is edited to become the Genesis Awards Television Special, airing nationwide and exposing millions of viewers to animal wrongs — and animal rights.

Distributed internationally by King Features Syndicate to more than 200 daily and Sunday newspapers, Bizarro is a satirical look at the incredibly surreal things that happen to all of us in our so-called “normal” lives. Piraro’s unique comedic perspective and superior artistic skills enable him to tackle a wide variety of topics and targets, including corporate greed, environmental waste, over-the-top consumerism and, of course, animal rights.

“The Genesis Award means more to me than any other cartoon award because it stands for such an important cause. I draw animal rights-themed cartoons both to entertain and to galvanize the members of the movement, and to attempt to educate readers, most of whom are not aware of the daily, routine and institutional abuse of animals in America,” said Piraro.

Beginning with the first ceremony in 1986, Genesis Awards entries have been submitted by the public as well as by media professionals. Categories span television, film, print, radio, music and the arts. The Genesis Awards Committee — via a process of submission, nomination, candidate selection, debate and secret ballot — makes all final decisions regarding the winners. The 17 committee members have been selected because of their personal histories in working for animals, averaging more than 15 years each “in the trenches.” The members include people from various animal-protection organizations and diverse walks of life, who all share a demonstrated commitment to animals.

About Dan Piraro and Bizarro

Piraro regularly speaks to schoolchildren, community groups and colleges and works as an animal rights activist. For his animal rights-themed cartoons, he was awarded The Humane Society’s Genesis Award in 2002 for Outstanding Cartoonist. He also creates comedy segments for The Next Big Thing, a syndicated program produced by WNYC, the public radio affiliate in New York City.

Bizarro entered syndication in 1985 with Chronicle Features as a replacement for Gary Larson’s famous The Far Side, which had moved to Universal Press Syndicate. Ten years later, Bizarro moved to Universal just as Larson retired. He has been with King Features Syndicate since 2003.

Piraro won three consecutive Best Cartoon Panel of the Year awards from the National Cartoonists Society in 2000, 2001 and 2002. He is nominated for this year’s Reuben Award for Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year – the National Cartoonists Society’s highest award. The winner of this prestigious award will be announced at the annual awards banquet in May of 2004.

About the Genesis Award

Created in 1986, the Genesis Awards event was launched by animal advocate and actress Gretchen Wyler under the aegis of The Fund for Animals. Wyler came up with the idea because she strongly believed that rewarding members of the media encouraged them to spotlight more animal issues, thus increasing public awareness and compassion toward animals. The first annual event, a luncheon drawing only 140 attendees, quickly grew into a large gala in Beverly Hills, Calif., with more than 1,000 guests.

In 1991, Wyler founded The Ark Trust, Inc., which continued to present the Genesis Awards. In 1990, the Genesis Awards ceremony became a television special airing first on the Discovery Channel and now on Animal Planet. In August 2002, The Ark Trust joined forces with The HSUS, changing its name to The HSUS Hollywood Office.

30 Harsh Things a Woman can Say to a Naked Man

1. I've smoked fatter joints than that.
2. Ahhhh, it's cute.
3. Why don't we just cuddle?
4. You know they have surgery to fix that.
5. Make it dance.
6. Can I paint a smiley face on it?
7. Wow, and your feet are so big.
8. It's OK, we'll work around it.
9. Will it squeak if I squeeze it?
10. Oh no... a flash headache.
11. (giggle and point)
12. Can I be honest with you?
13. How sweet, you brought incense.
14. This explains your car.
15. Maybe if we water it, it'll grow.
16. Why is God punishing me?
17. At least this won't take long.
18. I never saw one like that before.
19. But it still works, right?
20. It looks so unused.
21. Maybe it looks better in natural light.
22. Why don't we skip right to the cigarettes?
23. Are you cold?
24. If you get me real drunk first.
25. Is that an optical illusion?
26. What is that?
27. It's a good thing you have so many other talents.
28. Does it come with an air pump?
29. So this is why you're supposed to judge people on personality.
30. I guess this makes me the 'early bird.
