View Full Version : New Look to Luna Bars

My mom just came home with me some Kashi cereals and a couple of Luna Bars -- the Dulce de Leche one is in a new package and say "less sugar" on the front. I skimmed the ingredients and while it still says "no dairy products used" (or something like that), it now says "may contain traces of peanuts, dairy, etc.. (the others don't say this)
Anyways, no real reason to this post, but I was just a little freaked out by the new packaging.... :dizzy: and, er, traces... :stinkeye:

Looks to me like they jumped on the low carb band wagon a little too late.

Yah, I think the deal is: When they started making the low-carb luna bars, they included dairy in the recipe. So now... all the bars are made on shared equipment with dairy products.
I called their customer service hotline and yelled at them when they released the low-carb bars. :)
Anyway, I've yet to try the new ones. I still have a case of old ones laying around I need to eat.... hmm.

That annoys me to no end. WHY, WHY, WHY(!!!!) change a product when it is doing just fine the way it is? LOL, I just cannot put up with unnecessary change! Maybe the reason I am so irritated about this particularly, is because I had one of the "new" Nutz Over Chocolate Lunas and it was just... ehhh. It tasted like it was.. missing something? Oh, right.. flavor. Haven't tried any of the other "new" ones, but I was not impressed by that one. I mean, that's good for people who are sensitive to sugar, but IMO they should make the low sugar bars an option, not the standard. The new packaging is ugly, too :p

.
Ok yeah cause it's the people answering the phones faults!!!
(I know you probably didn't actually yell :p)
My mum always does that in stores shes all "WAH WAH" to the shop assistants when they dont know something and Im like "MUM! BEHAVE! GR!" because its fully not always their fault. Like hardly ever. Which is why customers sometimes suck. But some are loverly.

Actually, the lady I talked to knew a lot about it. She told me about the decision making process, and why they decided to include dairy in the recipe. She said it was good to get feedback like this, for when they evaluate the products.
And no, I didn't yell. I calmly told her I was disappointed and upset.

So do all the new ones actually contain dairy now or just traces of it due to the manufacturing process?

Just traces due to the manufacturing process.

The dairy ones were (are? I haven't seen them lately) called "Glow by Luna Bar" or some such garbage. I tasted one, for the record. It was gross, tiny, and kind of... waxy.
I haven't tasted the new ones. Unless Dulce de Leche and Caramel Apple are included in this new thingy (ie. they were already made that way when these flavors first came out). If so, I don't have a problem with it, as those two are now my favorite flavors.
And for me, low sugar is a good thing. I'm trying to cut back a little.

I don't like the idea of added fiber. I get way too much fiber as it is. Did they use any artificial-ish sweeteners instead of the sugar? .... Lemme go look at the website.

What's inulin?

It is this.
A polysaccharide with the general formula (C6H10O5)n that is found in the roots of various composite plants and yields fructose when hydrolyzed.
Is a cooky sugar.

Luna with dairy? Crap, that's selling out. :(
I prefer Clif bars anyway, as they're organic whereas Luna is not.

This is the response I received when I commented on the web site:
Thank you for taking the time to contact us here at Clif Bar Inc. about the changes we have made to Luna bars. We switched production to a new facility and reformulated all of our bars, which is why they have a new wrapper. There is still no dairy or animal products in any of our bars. As you have noticed the new label does state, "Contains Soy, May contain traces of peanuts, other nuts & dairy." The chocolate chips that go into our products are made on equipment that is also used to produce milk chocolate chips. This can result in trace amounts of milk protein showing up in the chocolate chips that go into our products. Given people's severe sensitivity to nuts and dairy we felt that morally we should warn consumers of these trace amounts. Also, we are now required by the FDA to label our products as such. You may be wondering about the meaning of the term "trace amount." A trace amount is an amount that cannot be seen, smelled or tasted, and is detectable only through sophisticated testing.
If you have any questions or comments please contact me at jhantman@clifbar.com or call 800-884-5254 ext. 105.

i tried a new chocolate peppermint stick one. it seemed to have about twice as much topping stuff, and tasted sweeter to me.

I think it's important to state clearly that LUNA BARS ARE STILL VEGAN. Did
you know that every vegan chocolate bar brand may contain traces of dairy (with
the one exception of Tropical Source, which is made on dedicated equipment)?
I don't think we should give Luna (Clif) a hard time for switching factories. It
would be a different story if they actually added dairy to the ingredient list!!!
I just saw the other day that they changed them. I think it's great that they added 30% more fiber & reduced the sugar by 25%. However, I never really liked Luna bars too much. I love Clif bars, though. :lick:

I had a new dulce de leche one. I thought that there wasn't much of a difference. They were too sweet before, IMO, and they're *slightly* less sweet now. I thought it was nice that they made them a little less candybaresque.

the one i tried tasted like 3 times sweeter and more candy barish.
