Kai EATS his crayons...and it drives me crazy. I know they are non-toxic, but I'm afraid that there is something in them that will harm him. I'm just totally paranoid. Can somebody please tell me they are delicious and nutritious and I have nothing to worry about?

I used to eat them too...nothing happened except having blue teeth once in awhile. And I ate Play-Doh
And there was that one time I stuck a blue crayon up my nose and couldn't get it out and it was an hour before I was supposed to be an angel in a pagaent.

Lucas has been doing this too! I usually just swipe out his mouth with my finger, then we go and brush his teeth.
Occasionally, he's eaten enough that his diaper comes out a little...um...multi-colored! But not nearly as bad as the time he got into my artist husband's good pastels...oh gosh, THAT was a colorful diaper!
I don't think it'll hurt him. I don't think the human body can digest crayon. I think it just passes through. :D

My daughter eats crayons as well, it always amazes me that shell turn her nose up at delicious food but stick a crayon or a piece of playdough in front of her and she shoves it right in the mouth no questions  , luckily most manufacturers take into account that small children explore by sticking things in their mouth anything made for a toddler is usually safe. Besides it's building their immune system, right?

just an fyi: pastels are very bad to injest. They should be kept well out of a child's reach.

Thanks for the link. The pastels were moved the minute we saw that he got into them. It was one of those "yikes, I didn't know he could reach THAT high!" discoveries! I don't think he's any worse for the wear because of that one-time injestion.

My kids like to eat chalk. They are 10 and 12. Wierd.
My oldest ate a couple of crayons when he was little, and he liked to chew paper, but I didn't worry about it. They seemed to just pass through.

Something to think about...
While the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) has primary responsibility for crayons and other such consumer products, EPA is concerned about any product that may pose a significant risk from asbestos exposure, particularly products that are used by children. CPSC is beginning an independent review of crayons to determine if they contain asbestos and EPA will be working with them to take whatever actions that may be necessary to ensure that these products are safe for our children.
Q. Does EPA believe that the crayons our children use are safe from asbestos?
A. At this time, EPA has not had an opportunity to review the findings of the tests that were conducted. CPSC is beginning their own independent testing of these products to determine if there is, in fact, a risk from asbestos.
Q. If these results are verified and asbestos -- even at very low levels -- is found in children's crayons, what should be done?
A. While extremely low levels of asbestos in crayons may not pose much of an actual risk to children, any exposure would be unnecessary. We believe that the companies that manufacture crayons will move swiftly to replace the talc in crayons with substances that don't pose any risks to children. If they do not, EPA and CPSC will work together to take whatever steps necessary to ensure that these products are safe for your children.

do any of you wonder if your kids might have nutritional deficiencies that make them crave non-food items? i know that kids eat all sorts of strange things, but if they are ingesting the same substance again and again, it could be pica, which is often a symptom of a specific mineral deficiency... just something to think about, if you notice a pattern...

Kai has since stopped eating crayons, and has now taken up eating Play-Doh.....the other day he had BRIGHT green poop....Play-doh green! Kids just put things in their mouths. I don't think it's a deficiency that causes them to eat stuff like that. I believe it's curiosity and exploration. I cringe at the thought of some of the things I ate as a child.

I was wondering about pica too, not for the babies but for the older kids who know what is food and what isn't, but their bodies are for some reason wanting the non food items.
My kids doctor says to buy two boxes of crayons because they will eat the first and he doesn't seem too concerned ;)
