Are Greyhounds Dogs? Kansas Says No
Racing Breed Isn't Protected By Kansas Pet Laws

UPDATED: 10:13 am EST March 15, 2005

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- When is a dog not a dog?
When it's a greyhound in Kansas.

It may sound like a punchline to a joke, but it's true. Two years after the Parimutuel Racing Act was passed in Kansas, the law protecting pets in the state was changed to exclude greyhounds from the designation of dog.

"A greyhound ought to be a dog in the state of Kansas," said Kevin Neuman, of Overland Park.

Neuman and his wife, Sherri, have fostered and adopted greyhounds for 11 years. They are also active in a greyhound placement organization for retired racers.

"We fell in love with the breed. They're definitely a dog . They're a great dog," Neuman said.

Monday, he went to Topeka to try to change the law.

The National Greyhound Association, based in Abilene, Kan., disagrees. The executive director called the change unnecessary and said greyhounds aren't bred for pets, and therefore, shouldn't fall under pet protection law

Oof. I understand Kansas has become pretty reactionary lately.

And all animals can't be protected by the same laws... WHY????

This just highlights the strange lengths that people go to to justify animal cruelty.

It seems that an animal only deserves protection from physical harm if that animal is convenient to humans' need for companionship. Otherwise it's just an object.

What are they, then? Their own species? WTF is up with people? This is just ludicrous.

Australia sells "retired" Greyhound racing dogs to Asia for food.

Yeah.... I loathe the Greyhound racing industry. And those involved (breeders, trainers, owners, punters..... they can all burn in hell for all I care).
Some in Australia are also later used for non-human animal testing.

This is a fairly common tactic amongst animal-entertainment types. I worked with a group in OK to abolish cockfighting there. The first step they took was having lawyers go to court to fight the idea that roosters are "not animals". Geez.

In the US they are just killed plowed into mass graves.

Last summer I went to several vegetarian festivals and all of them booths to adopt retired greyhounds.

In all my years of working in vet med (15+), I've seen many greyhounds, but only 1 that was raised from a puppy to be a pet (bad leg, useless racer, went to a greyhound rescuer). She acted exactly like any other dog raised from a puppy to be a pet, she was even able to sit!!! (There is a myth going around that greyhounds are physically unable to sit.) This is just as ludicrous as the Animal Welfare Act including all species of animals except those belonging to genus Mus and Rattus (mice and rats).

Aren't there any greyhounds who aren't abused? My mom's friend had a greyhound who was always in a bad mood as a result of his bad past experiences (racing), and he really didn't like anyone except his family. He probably hated most humans after that.

Yesterday I saw (on a bulletin board) a greyhound at an animal shelter that needed a home, who was also a "retired racer." This dog had been terribly abused.

Why, just because of being that breed, must these dogs suffer? Aren't any greyhounds left to live a normal life? Probably, but NONE should ever have to be treated that way. I agree, they can burn in hell, those who take part in this cruelty.

This law should be found in the dictionary under "rationalization."

I OWN A RETIRED (ie - RESCUED) GREYHOUND!
She isn't a dog, she's an extremely intelligent life-form that only LOOKS like a dog - silly me, to think I was adopting a DOG!!

Fifi (My toddler named her!!) is some sort of doggy alien- part-human couch potato who has her own bean-bag lounge chair, her collection of squeeky toys that she can't sleep without (serously), and a 'blankie' that she carries around with her....
She gets very agitated and WHINES if I turn the TV off when she's "watching" and will only eat out of a ceramic dish - NO PLASTIC for this gal;
She "talks" to me in a whole series of grunts and whines and chirps and other sounds - I can seriously carry on a whole conversation with her...

In all seriousness, the greyhound industry is as everyone said above - an evil, horrible, awful thing...

Adopted greyhounds CAN be wonderful pets, but get one from a reputable "rescue" group. Some were abused more than others and sadly, never make good pets, others (like mine) adapt to their new home immediately, and are wonderful companions!!

I'm going to see if I have a pic of her to post in the photo section...

What's ironic about all this is that the greyhound is one of the oldest breeds of domestic dog.

Not to get too far off topic, but I like that site you posted. If I could rescue a Greyhound, I would. They've never been my favorite, as far as look, because I've always had the bigger dogs, like this:

http://www.thepetprofessor.com/secPetProfile/dog_Profile_detail.ASP?breed=dog&BreedID=155
Had three of those at one time (well, one was crossed with a lab) and I've had a Golden Retriever and now have a Lab/Newfoundland cross.

But I would always open up my home to a Greyhound, though. That may just be one of the things I do later on...much later on, when I'm able to afford it more.

Has anyone checked out the Google ads that show up with this thread? This is apparently big business. How can anyone justify this? People are such a f-d up species!
