hello..
my poor face has had a terrible couple of months...
i bought the Clearly Compassionate facewash made by Naturewatch (uk charity) with so much enthusiasm, and threw away my old facewash (animal tested/animal products everything.. but it was last thing to go, and the only thing that i relied on even after being vegetarian for 11 years) and started using that.. almost immediately after washing for the first time it really dried out my skin, so i used it a couple more times and then gave up..
a well meaning family member bought me the Twiggy (60s supermodel) facewash (interestingly tested on Twiggy herself apparantly, but containing animal ingredients) and so i used that with apparantly no ill results.. until my face started coming out all blotchy and really itchy. it started as what looked like a cold sore even though i've never had a cold sore before and then spread into this terrible dry discoloured patch.. doctor recommended the Simple range (no animal products, but animal tested i think..) and told me not to use herbal based facewashes because of the acidity, but thats just buggered it all up more.
anyway, result is that for a month i haven't used anything apart from clean water to wash my face followed up with some barefoot-essentials facecream (all animal friendly :) ) , and my face is clear but feels a bit oily..
can anyone recommend something truly gentle AND cleansing AND wholly animal friendly? (preferably at a student-friendly price..)

Well, for sensitive skin I can recommend Eucerin by Beiersdorf Labs. They don't do animal testing but you should check their ingredients just in case.

I hope you find something that works for you!

Alba makes a good pineapple enzyme facial scrub.

Although, I got mine at Trader Joes for a lot less.

I would definitely recommend GratefulBody.

see if you can get it at local health food stores.
Other cleansers like Aubrey and Earth Science are pretty good.

I've been using Oil of Olay, Dove, & Biore but I think they do animal testing, I'm not sure does anyone know? I will give Kiss My Face a try. I loved their Olive Soap. :)

I'm pretty sure the Olay products are by Procter & Gamble, which seems to be a very hated company by PETA and other animal rights people because they own so many other well-known products and do horrible animal testing.
Dove is owned by Unilever which tests on animals (but I read they did reduce some animal testing after PETA bugged them about it but looks like they didn't end all testing). Although I think Biore tests, I'm not totally sure about that one.
Right now for face wash I'm finishing some Neutrogena stuff (that I bought before deciding to not buy animal cruelty products) which has managed to last a long time since I barely use it. I'm not really sure what I'll be using after that runs out  sorry I can't help :/

I have really sensitive skin and I've been just using a bar of sesame soap that I got at The Body Shop. I use it for my body and face. It works really well for me. I also like their Vitamin E line of face care. Oh, I'll admit it...I love all of their stuff.

ooh i can't seem to use soap on anything apart from my hands..
facewash is just one of those tricky things i suppose.. vegan cosmetics etc are all quite expensive, and as soon as you've bought one and found out its not for you, you've wasted more money than you have plus you have no facewash.. grr
anyway i'm going to have a look at all those things recommended above, the synthetic urea one sounds particularly interesting..
maybe we could set up some kind of free facewash swap thing? cos i have a barely touched basically new bottle of twiggy facewash and clearly compassionate facewash.. both opened and used a couple of times but otherwise really going to waste because my skin won't deal with it (doesnt mean that yours won't though..).. a shame. anyway, if anyone needs facewash, let me know ;)

I have dry skin and I've had great luck with the alba line that is in the green packaging, it is on sale currently at whole foods.

Dessert Essence's Thoroughly Clean followed up with J/A/S/O/N Apricot Scrubble do the trick for me... although I suggest applying the Scrubble extremely gingerly..

I love just about anything by Better Botanicals (http://www.betterbotanicals.com), although their things can be just a little pricey. However, I've found that a little really does go a long way.
I use their Herbal Cleanser, and it heals my acne and neutralizes both my dry and oily patches, and it also leaves it feeling very soft.
I also adore their Apricot Eye Cream. I suffer from severe under-eye circles, and it's amazing how this cream makes them disappear almost instantly.
Their website says they use all vegetarian ingredients, but I can't find anything that says they don't test on animals. I recall that they don't, but don't quote me on that. I might send them a quick email about it.

Better Botanicals is a good company. I have their sandalwood moisturizer, which I was using until I fell in love with Zia's oil-free moisturizer. But I still use BB Juniper Toner. It makes me feel more alive.

ooh well after much deliberation i found myself in lush the other day and got "angels for bare skin" and ooh its gorgeous.. no bad reaction as yet so i'm crossing my fingers, but i've made a list of everything suggested and when this one runs out/causes my face to explode i'll close my eyes and pick another one :D should keep me going for years..
my boyfriend also got charmed by lush and got some coalface soap yaay finally, some cleanliness..
