There are a few *grocery store* soaps vegans can use. Irish Spring! Only used that once or so years ago, but it has no animal products.
This also lists grocery store toothpastes.
One of my struggles being vegan is the cost of heath food store items. I just can't spent 3 dollars for a fair trade dark chocolate big bar, for instance. If it were just me, maybe, but I have 3 other people to feed.
So here are some cheaper alternatives for soap and toothpaste. Someone will probably tell me something I don't know.

I was always under the impression that Colgate-Palmolive tests on animals. Not a big deal if it doesn't bother you, but I know some vegans like to avoid animal-tested products.

as far as I know they have a temporary ban on animal tests going right now.

Also, Kirk's Castille soap is sold in many stores for like a buck a bar :) :vebo:

On their US site they have a page specifically for vegetarians. I don't know how applicable it is to Canada or anywhere else though.

Thats right, Colgate is not presently testing on animals but can do so at any time.

That's great to know!
I haven't bought any of their products in years because of their animal testing, but if it is indeed true that they currently do not test on animals, then I just might do some shopping and send them an email.

Colgate toothpastes contain glycerol, don't they?

Places like Trader Joes and Wild Oats sell all of the cruelty and animal free cosmetics that I would ever need. I'm not into buying the mainstream products found at conventional grocery outlets, but I am glad that apparently there are options now available for the folks who do not like shopping at places like Wild Oats (or are unable to because of location).

Thanks for the info. I'm one of those ruralites without a Trader Joe's or similar store anywhere near me. I've got a great HFS, but they only have a small beauty products section and they're outrageously expensive. You've widened my horizons!
