I kept meaning to post this earlier (I remember people asking about hair gel a while ago), but I haven't been on much because of work. Anyway, I was always buying hair gel from my local Dominicks, but then they stopped carrying the kind I bought (and knew was vegan)! I kept meaning to look at other stores, and I finally remembered to when I was at Target a few weeks ago.
Before I was veg I would always use La Bella 40 oz tubs. They're really cheap and HUGE! Well they have collagen/keratin in them, so they're not vegan. Then I saw something new (for me) at Target, La Bella 22 oz *bottles*! They seem to be vegan as far as I can tell, but since it's all just chemicals you might want to double-check. On the back of the bottle it lists one of the features as "No animal testing." :)
The kinds I got are rated "10" and "10+" for hold, because as some of you may know, I need strong gel (http://www.veggieboards.com/pics/showphoto.php?photo=2559&sort=1&cat=500&page=1). It works great, just as good as the giant tubs.
They have a few different kinds, but I got the "Super Spikes" and "Icy Cool." Icy Cool has lots of peppermint/spearmint, and it almost makes me gag (it reminds me of some medicine I can't put my finger on). The Super Spikes smells good though. You can see the other kinds on their site: http://labellabeauty.com/
They're all really cheap ($2 each--the other brands I bought at Dominicks are tiny bottles that cost even more).
While I'm talking about cheap mainstream stuff, I should mention VO5 shampoo and conditioner (if any of you don't already know about it). Schmeebs turned me on to it a while ago. Not tested on animals, and some kinds even have soymilk in them! :D
