Men's Magazines and Animal Atrocities

I was at the hairdresser's a few weeks ago and was flipping through magazines -STUFF and MAXIM specifically- though I can't recall which image was in which. Anyway, in one there was a picture of a cat in absolute agony tied down on it's back with all fours tied and stretched out, and a malevolent looking little boy vacuuming up it's genitals in a handheld vacuum. The "point" of the picture was for readers to come up with "funny" captions.
The picture in the other magazine was a mutilated and charred whole pig and the joys of cooking it (face still on and everything).

I was horrified and my hairdresser and I were discussing the fact that you would NEVER see something like that in women's mags like Glamour or Cosmo. It's disappointing to me that MAXIM and STUFF think (and maybe correctly) that their readers find these atrocities equally amusing.

Based on their subscription base/target demographic, and their readership numbers, my best guess is most readers do enjoy some of this stuff. My question is were the pictures staged or altered in any way? It seems to me that if either magazine published actual mages of animals being tortured for amusement, they'd be under a whole lot more scrutiny.

But its certainly not saying or even suggesting people go out and pour gas on a cat and set it ablaze. It is simply a joke, meant in humor or even sarcasm. A similar "joke" that got rave reviews was in the movie "Something about Mary" when the guy jumpstarted the dogs heart and the dog caught on fire. I fail to see what a joke has to do with any relevance here? Am I missing something?

Ha, so I am not the only one to post off-topic stuff. Our own admin does it, too.

I don't suppose Glamour or Cosmo would show animal mutilation pictures, but as far as I know they don't try to keep animal products out of their advertising.

Women's magazines usually don't have blatantly gross content, but they often promote leather, fur, and the latest food fads (which usually includes some kind of animal product). The content can't be in any way offensive to the advertisers, so you won't find an anti-dairy article in a mainstream magazine because most of them run got milk? ads.

The guy that lives downstairs from me get's Maxim. I've glanced through it a couple of times. Some of the articles are good...I think the quality of the photography (set aside the content) is what makes that mag popular. It's definitely a men's mag..no doubt about it. And the advertising proves it. Some men like that macho crap. I would think that crazy pic's would be staged via PhotoShop or some similar program...still doesn't make it right though.

I said I was at the hairdressers ;) Where else would one read stack after stack of cosmo/maxim/etc. (which also means i have no idea of what month i was looking at, so i can't help you find it n that sense. probably any time in the last year)
My hairdresser is a veg too and she was equally disgusted.

This was a letter sent in to Maxim and they published it.

"You guys seem to rip on vegetarians a lot. I know eating meat is manly and that I should wear a skirt because I don't think slaughtering animals is cool, but chill out and eat a salad."

They replied with, "If it's any comfort, we eat humans too."

For the record, I subscribe to Stuff but under a fake name "Richard James" (for spam purposes) and it was a free subscription. It is an okay magazine with too much bull****. It's good for toilet reading, though.
