I bought some soy protein powder tonight but stood in the health foods store supplement aisle for about 10 minutes trying to decide which one to get. I've heard soy protein is a high quality protein that helps build muscle which I need but at the same time, I'm afraid of having TOO MUCH of my protein intake coming from soy (you know the old advice about variety being best for you).

Do you supplement your veggie diet with a soy or rice protein supplement? Do you have a preference for one or the other?

I like MLO's Brown Rice Protein Powder. It's vegan too :)

If I ever use protein powder, it's soy, just because that's what they carry at an affordable price. I don't think I've seen rice protein powder there, or it was more expensive. I don't eat that much soy anyway though.

I love spirinula (SP?), I buy protein drink mixes made out of it, I think they are called spirutein (SP?), they are really yummy, my fav flavor is chocolate peanut butter

I like to use either rice or pea protein powders because my diet already consists of lots of soy.

I got a sample of chocolate Spirutein while I was at the store pondering protein powders:D I think I may get one of each of the above to go with the soy protein I purchased so I don't go on soy-overkill:) I've been working out with free weights and my muscles feel absolutely PARCHED!

Foxy, do you grind the hemp seeds or eat them whole?

Ditto. However, it occured to me that if it's all rice protein, its usefulness may be limited because it's not complete. Is that true?

The mixed-source veg stuff posted above sounds pretty good. Oh, at least it did until I realized that a serving size is 1/3 cup. That's a lot.

I never used any protein stuff until I joined a cycling team and started training. Now on days when I ride more than an hour and need some extra calories, I have a smoothie that contains protein powder and flax. 1/3 cup seems like a whole lot to add into a smoothie--right now I'm using a heaping tablepoon (of rice protein powder) and I can taste that a bit.

That is only 5 level tablespoons. It is about the same as other drinks.

It seems like a lot compared to the 1 heaping I'm using now. My smoothies aren't very big--5 tbs would really be a lot in them. I guess I could use less than one serving.

Well, the calories per serving is about the same as other protein drinks and since the protein is fully complimented you need to take less of it.

That said, my only complaint is that it doesn't come in chocolate :)

Arbonne's protein powder rocks! I love that they add in some extra things like ginseng, CoQ10, Alpha lipoic acid, kelp in addition to the other nutrition.
Oh, and it's pea protein. I am very concerned about too much soy in my diet.
