Dear Pete,

I must say that I am terribly disappointed. I kept seeing your Tofu2Go packages in the cold soy products section at Wild Oats, and the "Santa Fe Sizzle with Mango Pineapple Fusion" had thoroughly sparked my curiosity, as well as imagination. I looked at the package and thoroughly read it. You said nothing about cooking it or anything and it is, afterall, called Tofu2Go, so I figured it had to be convenient, and picked it up.

I got to the office and opened the package. The tofu is in liquid and vacuum-sealed and the plastic is not easy to break either. I searched around the office desperately for a pair of scissors. We programmers really don't keep scissors around. I got the package open and spilt the liquid all over my desk. The container is not exactly what I would consider a container you would eat from. You might consider doing your tofu the same way they do frozen spaghetti and other shelf-type meals. I looked at my coworker's desk and decided she would kill me if I borrowed her gold-colored fork. I reluctantly ate the wet tofu with my hands. At least you do provide a little tray for the mango-pineapple fusion sauce. Shall I mention that you only provide one little double tray, but you have 4 servings in the package. It is 2Go afterall.

The taste of the tofu and sauce (this is the part that really matters) was okay. It wasn't great. I did not eat all 4 servings, which I could have easily done if I really liked the taste of it. I am glad I did not, because the fat and sodium content is a little hefty, despite the lack of flavor. If I get in the mood again, I might try the creamy yogurt-looking stuff you make. It looks appealing on the package too....

(Note: This letter was not actually sent to the company and just used for the review format here.)

For the price, it's not really worth it. The product can be improved and I would not be surprised if it is in the future.....

I haven't tried any other flavors. Has anyone else ever tried Tofu2Go? What flavor was it? What did you think?

Hey Froggyfrog..I think you may have been having one of those irritable days..I know cause I 'em too..

But, Petes Tofu is really good stuff! For one,it comes with a small spoon to eat with (check in the bag!),and if you are really careful, you can open the plastic cover without any trouble. It is covered in a liquid, because it's fresh tofu and tofu likes water.

*Tip,when dealing with the 'dessert' tofu,I like to have it at home and blend it with my hand held blender and have it over waffles, like a yogurt.I recommend that to you.It IS slightly tasteless..but isnt all tofu???

Also,I actually like the dinner tofu's best..fried up or dipped in the sauce with veggies. It's really yummy and I hope you will give Pete's another go.

:) :)

The only petes tofu2go i had was more like an easy-already-flavored-but you still have to heat it and such, kind of thing. I take it as more of an elimination of the steps of marinating and processing my own tofu and making a sauce, and just heat it and use it to top pasta or rice.

I can see how itd be a fairly annoying office lunch though, but dont give up on it! :)

I am loving the Sesame Ginger stuff by Petes Tofu2Go. I admit it's not really 'to go" cause it comes in 4 triangle chunks, all wrapped in same plastic. Would be awesome if they were individually wrapped. But aside from that, I do love them and usually open up the pack the night before, slice it up and pour the sauce over it in a lunch container and let it marinade all night. Next day for lunch I've got yummy sesame tofu swimming in sauce, lol. I also add a bit of the Litehouse brand sesame ginger sauce for extra flavor. I'm not a fan of the dessert ones by Petes though...

I like the Pete's tofu (although I've never tried that particular flavor), but it's definitely NOT 2Go. It's difficult to open and messy and has waaaay too much excess packaging. I wrote them an email a long time ago stating something to that effect, and never heard back. I don't buy it all that often for those reasons.

The mango and key lime are great on the go, and I ahve never ahd a problem witht he taste or convenience.

The others are not "to-go" but rather something you throw in a stir fry to save time marinating them yourself.

Packaging needs to tell you this. (They do mention the possibility of putting it in a stirfry or salad.) But part of it makes it sound like finger food -- especially with the dipping sauce.

i've never tried the dessert ones or tried it "to go" but i love this stuff. esp the lemon pepper! i use it in stir frys and curry dishes.

yum, yum, yum.

but i agree, it is deceptive packaging.

I dont like the dessert or the regular ones ;-) I guess I'll just have to keep on making my own tofu chocolate pie (mmmmm) and season my own tofu for stir-fries. I've never found a seasoned tofu i like as much as the ones I can make on my own.

froggy, if you don't send that letter/email to them, then how do you expect them to change?

This is the very first time I tried the product.... I may simply write them and ask them to make the intent a little clearer....

Okay, I am coming over in a few minutes. I want tofu cooking lessons followed by a taste test. I promise to pay you back in an endless supply of crockpot soups.

I saw them in the store and I was confused on how to eat it. I read the entire back of the package to try to figure it out. I did find it vage, but I think I might give it a try next time I see them.

I wasn't impressed when I tried the...berry flavor. It was pinkish colored; I don't remember specifically what the name was but...methinks one could make a much better dessert/food tofu themselves, sans convenience of the Tofu2Go, but since shelf life is pretty long on tofu, preparing a batch in advance could nix that problem.

...guess I'm an odd-ball out because I don't think they're good... :sealed:

I gave Pete a second chance on the "2go" bit. The desert tofus are really pretty good! I had no idea you could give tofu such a convincing flan texture. I wish Pete would make flan -- all you need is some vanilla, right? The peach mango stuff was really good though. My only complaint is that the spoons really are a total waste. I packed my own.

I've been having those for lunch everyday.
(I don't use the spoons though. I keep them cuz they're cute. :) )
And the peach is my favortie too.

Yesterday I bought Pete's Tofu 2 Go - Key Lime Flavored Dessert. The container was quite difficult to open, which resulted in tofu water being spilled down the front of my shirt. The flimsy container made is impossible to not spill the water on me AGAIN. Now on to the flavor...oh, they left that part out. Tasted like nothing and the texture was not appealing. It was on sale so I thought I'd try it. Sure glad I didn't pay full price. I won't be getting this again. This is the third time I've tried tofu. I'm done.

Oh no-no-no-noooo...

There really ARE wonderful ways to enjoy tofu - but plain out of a package is NOT the way to go...

Do you cook? There's a ton of great recipes in the food section.

OK, I'll toot my own horn (not called Princess Tofu for nothin!!) and tell you there's two recipes there that I posted - I have convinced some very confirmed tofu-haters to try them... and they always come back for more... look for the Orange-Ginger Tofu or the BBQ Tofu with Polenta... I promise they're worth trying...

...and I know from experience there are a ton of other good recipes posted for tofu as well... all very yummy - try one!

I enjoy the sesame ginger ones. But, I certainly repackage them before I take them somewhere. I, however, hate...hate hate hate the dessert tofus...nasty bland crap.

I like the tofu to go deserts - I've had the lime, berry, mango and caramel. I like them all, but then again I like most food period. :D They ARE nice on the go, I think. I usually eat one on each brake so I just bring both. The packaging can be difficult, but you just have to be really careful, and open on a surface. I feel like a dork eating out of the little tray with a tiny spoon, but whatever. :D

And Linda, don't let that be your last tofu experience! I liked it, but it IS a good bit bland for tofu. You might want to try freezing some tofu after you drain it, and thawing it, to give it a nice texture, and then marinating it for a while and frying it. That's a totally different experience!

Ok, TNS and Sokara have convinced me to give tofu another try. Although I think I'll wait a while before doing so. I think the biggest turnoff is the texture. Maybe I'm too new at being a veg*n and am comparing tofu to meat? Whatever the reason, I'll try again in a few weeks.

Okay, there have definitely been lots of threads on this, but since I'm a HUGE tofu-2-go fan, I'll post again. The name is misleading, definitely, but it's so good! You just have to COOK it! I used to buy them all the time for $2.50 at TJs, but they stopped carrying them! That was cheaper than "regular" flavored tofu, and it came with sauce! Now I have to pay $4 at Dominicks, but it's still worth it. To cook:

Cut open package over the sink! Drain water out, then open the rest of the way.
Spread apart slices on a pan and BAKE, 400 degrees, ~15 min, flip halfway through. Cook longer if you like them crispier.

I cook them in my toaster oven. Then I cut a tiny corner off the sauce package, and put a little bit on each bite, rather than dipping (because I don't have a tiny bowl to put the sauce in and I'm lazy). Dipping on a plate doesn't work!

Baking it rocks, it's all crispy and awesome. Try it! Sesame Ginger, all the way. The rest are also good, though. Then come back and tell me they suck! Go ahead, I dare you! Take the "Tommy Gun's Tofu-2-Go baking method challenge"! (don't you hate those commercials?)

I do the same thing Tommy, the sesame ginger is soooo good that way. I made it for my lunch yesterday. We have a toaster oven in our classroom. I think my co-workers were jealous. They kept telling me how wonderful it smelled..hehe I still do hate the dessert tofus. I can take plain silken tofu and mix it with some wonderful fruits and get better tasting results.
