Wanted to put a thread up to list any good books that you've read recently or recommend....

I just read "Midwives" by Chris Bohjalian (an Oprah Book Club book) which I thought was awesome. You don't have to have any real interest in midwifery or anything- you just have to be able to handle words like vulva and uterus without cringing.

"The Red Tent" by Anita Diamant, as I have already mentioned on VB, is an awesome book. (In fact, the main character, Dinah, is a midwife, so if you're interested in the topic like VP is, go for it!)

I'm also rereading "Eyes Wide Open" by Bill Romanowski. I read it for a class last year, but it has so much that I didn't gather from the first reading. It offers a very different perspective on consuming and thinking about media texts than I had previously encountered.

The beginning of August 2002 I happened across www.farmsanctuary.com. 2 days later I was at the Library getting information about all aspects of veg*nism. I'm always getting stuff from there (I work by Cleveland's Main Library which makes it easy). But,I hardly ever finish what I borrow though. The last book I read from front to back was *embarrassed* August of 2002. It was Mad Cowboy: Plain Truth from the Cattle Rancher who won't eat meat. It's my suggested reading for anyone who's recently decided to stop eating animal and animal by-products.

I'm currently reading 5 books giving travel tips on Disneyworld and Florida. Trying to plan a July 2003 vacation. Needless to say, I've not finished any of them.

I usually read at least two books at a time. ^^;;

At home, I'm reading "Living Among Meateaters" by Carol Adams.
At work, (on lunch breaks, etc.) I'm reading "Wit'ch Storm" by James Clemens.

I also have a copy of "Storm Warning" by Mercedes Lackey in my car, for occasions where I'm stuck waiting and need something to occupy my time.

I think I'm going to pick up a copy of "The Hours" today. ^^;;

i can't read more than one book at a time. they blend together. i try not to even read something else in the middle of reading a series. which is why i haven't read anything lately, i've been waiting for the next Wheel of Time book. if i read something else in between i get all mixed up and forget what happened in the previous books. partly why i'm rereading it, but mostly because i can't afford the hardcover copy of #10 so i have to wait til it's in paperback.

but i keep coming across little things in book 1 that i didn't catch the first time, and things i forgot about. stuff that happens later on makes more sense to me now :)

The last book I read was Counterfeit Son. It was really good about a boy whos dad was a serial killer. And his dad dies so he took on the identity of a boy named Neil that his dad abducted 6 years ago.

Hmmm. I've been reading a whole lot lately, as when you are depressed it helps to fall into someone else's world for a while. I really loved "The Lovely Bones" and "Lucky", both are amazing books by Alice Sebold. Also, "The Nanny Diaries" was hysterical. I read it in 5 hours flat.

I also read a book called "Fishbowl", and I've been reading "Living Yoga" on and off for some time now. I also just finished "Running With Scissors" which was totally BIZARRE and gave me nightmares. I also ready a trashy book by Diana Diamond called "The Good Sister". It sucked pretty much, which reminded me why I normally don't read trashy books. Hmm. I know I've read some more that I just can't recall at the moment. You now know why I haven't been on VB in a while. I've been a reading hermit.

Sounds interesting. Is it pretty good? Who is the author?

Yeah it is really good. The ending is a surprise though. I am not sure who the author is because I have already returned the book to the library.

I just finished Tobias Wolff's The Night in Question and Kathy Reich's Deadly Decisions (I'm a sucker for a good thriller mystery, though this one wasn't as thrilling as I'd have liked).

I've just started Emma Forrest's Namedropper. It's so charming. And witty. And British.

The Way of the Peaceful Warrior and The Sacred Journey of the Peaceful Warrior, by Dan Millman. Two of the best books I have read.

I read Angela Carter's Wise Children this summer, and it was so good that when I finished it, I started reading it over again immediately. Smart and funny. I definitely recommend it.

This isn't a recent read for me, but it is probably one of my all time favorite books. "Memoirs of a Geisha" by Arthur Golden. I was reading this during grad school and I had a hard time putting it down to study :). The vivid descriptions of the Geisha Lifestyle are just fascinating. All of the training they go through and what they must do to maintain their geisha status - wow!!. I would highly recommend this book. In fact it spawned for me a fascination with the whole geisha culture. They were such highly trained and skilled artists - and you don't see that much today.

skylark, what was it about the 'eyes wide open' book that had you look at things differently? I'm curious - perhaps this is on my "next to read" list... i've seen it at the bookstore (powells... which is evil in that "so good it's evil" sort of way - it takes up an entire city block). It piques my curiosity.

I'm currently reading Tom Robbins' "Still Life with Woodpecker."

But the last book I finished was Maeve Binchy's "Tara Road." It's pretty much a "chick book" but I loved it (probably has to do something with my being a chick LOL). It reads just like a British movie - the main plot is surrounded with several subplots. I loved the book. Secrets, romance, gossip... Maeve Binchy is an excellent writer. I can't wait to read some of her others...
