View Full Version : Jealousy of partner

So my bf and I are both on a diet. I am vegan, he is omni. I am trying to eat more whole foods, cut calories and processed crap, etc.
He has chosen the Atkins path. We have been at it for 3 weeks. Nothing for me, and I am hungry all the time. He has lost 18lbs sitting on his ass, eating meat and doing nothing.
It is starting to breed a real resentment...I don't know how to deal with these feelings...I *should* be supportive and happy but frankly, I despise the diet and am starting to really resent him. I have this vision of him getting thin on Atkins, and I will still be this fat ass...but at least I'll be eating healthy
I swear, I am thankful that meat is so repulsive to me and that I have been veg long enough not to slip. Otherwise, the big A would be very appealing :(

You will have the last laugh. You're changing your eating patterns to something positive and you'll lose weight and be healthier. The Atkins diet achieves short term loss but as the behavious isn't modified, most people will put the weight back on when they go back to a normal diet.
Be patient and work extra exercise into your diet.

I have the same problem, to a lesser degree. My husband still eats crap, but has made a few small changes (eating breakfast, eating more fruits and vegetables and less chocolate). When he mentions his weight loss or his pants falling down I tell him to f- off or shut up. Sarcastically, or course, because we joke like that.
Remember that your chosen diet will take longer to see results. Also, the quicker one loses weight, the more chance they have to gain it back.
ETA: And Atkins is hard to maintain long-term. I know from experience. Of course, there weren't all of the no carb products available back then.

 when he was talking about making pancakes with "atkins flour" the other day, I had to leave the room before I said something snarky.

What the heck is Atkins Flour? I heard a commercial for some sort of Atkins ice cream and thought, oh I bet that tastes really good.

A normal healthy body cannot generally metabolise fat at a rate of more than 1-2lbs a week. Also keep in mind that one pound is 3500 calories. In order to burn off 6 lbs of fat per week, he'd have to have created a calorie deficit of 21,000 calories. That would take the effort of running or walking over 200 miles!! Low-carbohydrate diets are notorious for quick short term weight loss due mainly to water loss. The 6lb a week loss is a very good indicator that he is losing a great deal of water and perhaps muscle, as well. Its certainly nothing to be jealous of.

And his breath probably stinks due to ketosis. Yeah.

A good amount of the weight is also water weight- when your body goes into ketosis, you lose a ton of water.

Low carb diets take off more weight in the begining then other diets ( mostly water ) but over time the losses of low fat and low carb diets are equal.
With real diets ( lifestyle changes, not fad diets ) the weight is more likely to stay off.
Unless your husband plans on eating like he is for the rest of his life it is going to come back....and with a vengence....once he tastes carbs again.

Hey, tell your husband to watch out for "warning" signs that his Atkins diet might not be the best choice...
i.e. warning sign #1. The atkins dude died.
warning sign #2. The atkins dude died "fat".
warning sign #3. Many people start the atkins diet, and loose at first.. but do you know any skinny people that did it using atkins? - no, because once they get off the stupid thing.. they eat a bagle and gane everything back seconds later...

Richard and Steve trust me...I KNOW how horrible of a diet it is. dumbass thought, is a die hard omni and is looking for the easy way out.
Liposuction would be healthier than Atkins :p lol

With respect to your warning sign number one, Atkins fell and hit his head and died later due to complications. Are you saying that if he wasn't on his own diet that he wouldn't have fallen?

Yea... Defiantly... why do you think he fell.. bad diet... I have never fallen and died.... perhaps his equilibrium was out of whack?

if i had a dime for the peeps i know who have lost mass wieght on atkins but gained it back i'd be so rich. it's a diet, not a lifestyle change. you just cant live off of pure protien fat forever. it works fantastic but only temporarily. it is not healthy or practical. people think dining with veggies is hard, atkins followers are freaks, not us. thats all i have to say about his temporary weight loss.
now you didnt mention if you excercise or not?? if not, maybe add that into your routine. if you already do, maybe you've reached a plataeu. do you still feel winded afterwords. try changing up your routine. as far as your actual diet is concerned that sounds like a good start. personally as a vegan i do try to keep it to a 50-30-20. 50%carbs 30%protein 20% fat. percentages may vary though. i run alot so i find that the 50% carbs keeps me energetic, however, if i had a more sedentary life-style i might try a 40-30-30 intake??
anyway just dont get discourage, im saying this from a health standpoint and not a non-meateating standpoint. his diet sucks.

A diet is basically a permanant change in your diet for the better. Most people don't follow the 'permanant' part. For your partner to keep the weight off, he is probably going to have to use the Atkins diet forever. Going back to his original eating habits will probably make him put the weight back on.
Like others have said, you are doing the right thing. With exercise and healthy eating you will be able to keep the weight off that you will gradually lose. Don't lose hope. I know it must be hard watching him lose weight, when there is nothing for you yet, and you are trying so hard :) Hang in there!

Are you serious? Given he was 6' and weighed in at 260 there's no doubt he was overweight and probably consider obese by some when he died but to say he slipped and fell on an icy street was a result of his diet is more than a bit of a stretch. If you're asking the question if whether of not his equilibrium was out of whack, it's pretty clear you're reaching for conclusions.

Beside the obvious health problems associated with the Adkins Diet. It has a 100% drop out rate (look it up, do your research). Yes he WILL lose weight, Yes he WILL lose it fast. Then he will gain it back and more when he can't keep it up. Let's just hope this occurs before he has kidney failure or serious bowel problems.
Your diet, is something that can be done for life. A way of life so to speak. In the long run, you will be better off and healthy!

Agreed that focusing on your health is more important than your weight. (I know, it's hard!)
Remember too, that he's a guy...it's likely easier for him, Atkins or not.
Also, for me, the biggest factor in weight issues is not what I eat, but how active I am. I'm sure there's some biological reason involving metabolism/glands, etc...but I burn calories far more efficiently when I'm active. So keep on groovin...you'll get there. :)

Thank you guys so much. I'll just keep on keepin on. I have decided that I AM joining the gym I was looking at...I start Monday.
Also, there are Weight Watchers meetings right across the street from our apt. at my church...I'm checking it out tonite if the snow doesn't keep me at work.
I know it won't be ideal, but maybe if I go and hear that others are struggling, regardless of what plan they follow, I'm hoping it will help me stay more positive and stick to it.
:lovesign: all VB :) what would I do with out you guys? :)

Good for you! Support groups can be very beneficial to the long term success of a diet. Keep it up :) :)
