I'd be much happier exercising outside, but this winter weather is brutal. So, it's a treadmill day for me. How about you?

I treadmill at the gym. I'm not an outside exerciser because I seem to break out into hives faster when I'm outdoors walking/jogging than indoors. Climate control and all that...

I switch off between treadmill and outside depending on where I am (home or work) and what time of day it is (I don't like to run outside at night) and what time of year it is (it never gets too cold here to run outside, but in the summer it's definitely too hot for me). I like both for different reasons. Outdoors you can obviously look at things you pass, but the treadmill appeals to the control freak in me. I like knowing exactly how fast I'm going, how many calories I'm burning, what my incline is, etc.

Yep, at home and at the gym

I do at the gym. I like to gradually increase the incline along with the spead through the course of a half hour. I put on my headphones, jam out, and am oblivious to anyone around me. Sometimes I get so into it I start to run. I wish I could run long but my calves start to get really tight like they are going to charlie horse. How do I get them not to do that? I could run longer if they didn't do that.

I use the treadmill when I need to do lower intensity cardio. I don't workout outside at all, unless I'm walking the dog. I'm becoming quite a hermit and do not want to deal with people, hence my reluctance to join a gym or take classes. I've got a TV, DVD player and VCR set up in front of it, too, so that helps.

I did when I lived with my dad because he has one (it's mostly used as an expensive clothes rack now  ). Now, it's walking outside or walking in the mall.

I recently bought one and am enjoying it so far. I prefer walking dogs outdoors but this neighborhood ruins that for me.
It's easy to walk on it for an hour while watching tv

I love being outside, but this winter I have occasionally used a treadmill. The problem that I find it so dang boring. By the end of the first mile I want to stop and bang my head against the wall.
I want Spring  ... but I'd settle for 40 degrees and some sun by 6am.

Dreadmill! I find it to be so boring. I'll run outside, so long as it is over 30. If it's not, I do a tape, which I hate passionately.

LOL! I like that! I hate the treadmill. It's boring in its own special way really. I can't describe it, but everyone who is used to running outside knows. For some reason I can go hours on an elliptical machine but 5 minutes on the treadmill and I'm bored to death.*
*I usually don't use a treadmill, since I always seem to hurt myself using one. I wouldn't BE using one, except for the fact it's -900 with the wind here and the university doesn't think its necessary to plow the sidewalks...or streets.

The real thing even on a gym floor beats a tread mill any day.

It was boring until I started watching my recorded shows or movies. And I get what you mean about neighborhoods (http://www.veggieboards.com/boards/showpost.php?p=624132&postcount=100), Erin. Good to see you, btw.

The fitness center I go to has a movie theater with elipticals, bikes, treadmills, and stepers. I like it in there because its dark and I have something to watch while I listen to my tunes.

I was lucky enough to make it to the gym and home before the snow accumulated.
If you do buy a treadmill check out ebay or your local classified ads. Many people buy things like juicers and home exercise equipment only to have them collect dust. You can get some nice stuff cheap

I use a treadmill only when absolutely necessary....I would much rather play tennis for five hours than run on a treadmill for 30 minutes! This morning I'm going to play some basketball, so that should change things up a little!

Thanks. :)
I read the link. Sounds like the kids around here.
My biggest complaint about my treadmill is the noise. I'd like it a lot better if it ran silent.

When I was training for my marathon, I had to do a lot of powerade to keep the calves from charleying - make sure you are getting enough water and electrolytes.
I am dreadmilling right now because I am combatting a knee injury, which the crowned roads near our place really aggravate. SOOOOO boring.

Go to www.coolrunning.com to "learn" how to run. Generally, that happens because you're not used to it and/or aren't properly hydrated before running. You need to increase your running amounts in small increments, and have a glass of water about an hour before your run. Also, it helps to stretch before and after (though some people prefer to walk 5 minutes, then stretch, then run, or not stretch at the start at all and just stretch after).

I alternate between treadmill and road running, depending on time of day, weather, etc.
I prefer the outdoors, but my neighborhood makes it necessary to limit outdoor runs to either early morning or early afternoon.

How do you injure yourself? What type of injuries are you talking about?

Running outside is special on a great sunny winter day, but the hard-packed snow in the park doesn't lend itself to any kind of speed work. I hit the treadmill at least 3 times a week to get in some quality mileage.
Set the incline to 1% to simultate outside running (pushing thru the air). Setting a challenging MPH keeps you honest.
I take a sip from the water bottle every 5 minutes. it's a little treat that seems to help the time go by a bit faster.

It is summer here, but you wouldn't think so today - so it was a treadmill day today

I do a good deal of running on the treadmill. I prefer running outdoors but the weather here prevents me from doing it most of the winter. I don’t like to run when there is ice or snow, I’ve fallen a couple of times on the ice and I don’t want to get hurt. I did the majority of my marathon training on the treadmill last year. The longest run I’ve done on it was 16 miles. Man, that was boring but I watched a few movies, listened to some music, and somehow got through it. I’m training for another spring marathon so I’m back on the beast until the ice and snow go away. As much as I hate the thought of running on it especially for the long runs, I have to love my treadmill because without it I wouldn’t be ready for my run in May.
