So...you might have heard that I just recently found out that I am pregnant. I am in that 6-7 weeks pregnant stage, where I haven't really told anybody yet. (my sister's last pregnancy ended in miscarriage at 12 weeks, so I am a little nervous about that).

This week, the morning sickness hit me, HARD. I have thrown up twice already today. I am trying to get as much rest/sleep as possible, but of course that's a challenge while I'm chasing my one-year-old around the house! And the poor little guy just doesn't understand why mommy would rather lie on the couch and rest. I'm also trying to eat healthy, and only eat foods that appeal to me (I've started having those nasty food aversions).

So...any tips on how to curb the nausea? (besides the old Saltines & Gingerale cliche...those actually have the opposite effect on me because I now associate them with getting sick from my first pregnancy!!)

Thanks!

Other herbs that I've heard work besides ginger are red raspberry and wild yam. But I don't h ave any personal experience to share.

Hope you feel better soon!

You poor thing! I know exactly what you're going through. It's the worst feeling. I was sick my entire first pregnancy, but the second through the fifth months were the worst. I literally couldn't keep anything down, even water and was hospitalized overnight due to dehydration. Hopefully it won't get that bad for you. I've been a little luckier this pregnancy, I was only sick for about 6 weeks. Still, though, I couldn't eat a thing.

I tried everything under the sun, and I didn't really find anything that worked, except to eat anything that sounds good to you. When I could finally eat again this time, I ate bean burritos 3 meals a day and nothing else. Then those made me sick and I ate 3 sandwiches a day. I lost 25 pounds this time, which scared me, but my midwife said I was fine. When you're sick like this, don't worry about eating a balanced diet. Your baby will get everything it needs from you. And remember it will pass, hopefully really soon. Now I can eat just about anything again, besides a few aversions I'm having.

I hope you feel better soon!

Congrats! When my sister had morning sickness pretty bad, the midwife told her to eat salty foods and to avoid letting her stomach get completely empty. She said an empty stomach actually made it worse.

I've never had morning sickness but I know peppermint makes the nauseous feeling subside when I have the flu. Got any leftover candy canes around the house?

Thanks! Wow...I hope I don't get it as bad as you did your first pregnancy!

Last night I was starving because I had hardly eaten anything all day, and I made some organic oven fries and "Chik" nuggets. I took a bite of chik nugget and spit it right back out! But those oven fries were amazing! I ended up eating 3 helpings of them!

I'm also having trouble with the whole grains. The only grains I can handle right now are white toast and cream of wheat. At least cream of wheat has lots of iron.

Yeah, an empty stomach is the worst. It's hard...I can't keep very much down, but then if I don't eat enough, or often enough, I feel even worse. Blehhhh...

I thought I tried everything during my pregnancy because I was sick the whole time too. Papaya, ginger, lemons in my water, etc. I ended up eating a lot of fatty foods because I could keep them down, but it wreaked havoc on my body (gallbladder and weight gain). I was not vegan at that point so I wasn't really trying a lot of new foods - just eating a lot of crap. Now, looking back on it, I wish I had taken the time to explore every inch of Whole Foods for foods that appealed to me.

Oh, and congrats! I didn't know this until now :D :vebo:

I strongly recommend investing in a relief band.
www.reliefband.com
I have one for motion sickness, but its also FDA approved for morning sickness and nausea associated with chemotherapy, and it really does work fantastic, and is drug/side effect free!

I'm with Rabid Child on this one. I have a pair of Sea Bands for motion sickness, and they work suprisingly well for the nausea!

relief band is a step up from seabands. It stimulates the pressure point that seabands aim to stimulate, but do so with mild electrical pulses. :D

And it's also, like eighty bucks! :p But I'm sure it's great.

Congrats to you! :) How exciting! Is your current little one prepared for this?

I took (and still take actually) Rainbow Light Prenatal ONE's multivitamins. It contains things (like ginger and spirulina, etc.) to ward off sickness. It worked. Even though a lot went wrong during my pregnancy I NEVER had morning sickness! :)

For me it was smells that triggered the nausea. That and the wrong foods. To combat the smell issue, I would carry two things with me at all times. A handkerchief scented with lemon juice and a handkerchief scented with peppermint oil. If I got a whiff of something unpleasant I would grab one, take a whiff, and it would make the nausea pass. Course I also remember a few times getting sick in my trash can at my desk cause nothing was gonna help.

congrats!

i know that increasing complex carbohydrates helps things stay down. my mother did this and after her first bout of morning sickness, never really had the problem again (except for the smell issue, and she carried around little saches). so, whole grain breads, pitas, tortillas, potatoes, etc, are a good idea.

while pregnant with my sister, my mom ate a lot of bread and butter, tortillas and butter, and so on. She also ate a lot of nut butters and fruit on bread. She really fell for peanutbutter and banana on whole wheat. Of course, any sort of nut butter or whole fruit (even in a 'jelly' form) will do (we use 'all fruit' jellies that have no sugar).

also, you may want to increase your whole foods intake and get clear of meat analogues and over processed stuff. they'll probably just annoy your system anyway.

good luck with everything!

hey, thanks for the congrats everyone.

So, good news. Yesterday after I posted, I didn't throw up for the rest of the day! I think the most important thing right now is keeping my stomach full. Yesterday I finally found something that appealed to me for lunch (sorry to all you vegans) - crispy toast with un-melted cheese slices on top. It felt so good on my stomach that I ate three of them. That seemed to work. I did throw up first thing this morning, but then I ate a good breakfast and I'm feeling a little better.

Vegiemom - I don't think my little one is quite old enough to understand what's going on just yet. He's only 17 months and all I get is a blank stare when I tell him there's a baby in Mommy's tummy. I have my first nurse's appointment today and I'm bringing him along, so we'll see how that goes. (Before you all gasp in shock, this is just a pee in the cup and have a little conversation type appointment, not a naked mommy with legs in stirrups appointment!)

RabidChild & Missleigh - WHERE do you get Seabands or the relief band? They sounds GREAT!

Rincaro - I'll have to try that lemon juice handkerchief thing. Smells are definitely getting to me. The worst is when my son wakes up in the morning, and I haven't eaten yet, and I have to change his poopy diaper. :spew:

Vicky - thanks for the congrats. I promise, pregnancy is not a nightmare! Yes, morning sickness sucks in a huge way, but later on in the pregnancy it gets much much better. Personally, I think it's fun once I have the cute round belly and get to wear maternity clothes. Or maybe I'm just crazy. :dizzy:

Just wanted to say congrats!

When my mom was pregnant with my sister Maya, every smell made her sick she was a stoplight behind a diesel truck, she just opened her door and threw up, the next day at work her coworker comes up and says her husband was in the car behind my mom. She was a little embarased.
Then when Maya was around 2 she would constantly tell everyone "my mommy has a baby in her tummy." They decided she picked that up from daycare, a lot of the kids in the group had expecting mothers.
