Its no secret, women’s bodies are just so beautifully diverse, its notoriously difficult for the vast majority of us to find pants that fit. The lower-rise styles have solved the majority of my hip-waist ratio dilemmas, so now my biggest problem is finding pants that are the right length. Whenever I ask about additional lengths at the store I get a lot of less than helpful comments including some people who, at 5’7”, don’t think I am tall enough to warrant a ‘long’. I have even gone so far as to write companies … who also respond in a similar manner. This made me curious as to what length of pants most women need. I honestly don’t see myself as having abnormally long legs.

PS - When measuring an inseam, I measure aong one leg from the crotch seam of my pants to the floor.

5'7, and I usually like at least a 34" inseam. Most pants ('regulars') are a 32" if I am not mistaken.

I hope it's not a sales person telling you you're not tall enough to ''warrant'' a long. Why should they care?

ETA: Yay!! there's a poll (that wasn't there a second ago)!!!!

I'm about 5'10". I wear a 34, generally. most "talls" are 34-36, and I always buy tall. If I'm wearing heels I might do a 36".

Yes, the salespeople tend to look at me sideways and ask my height when I inquire about long sizes. They don't outright say I can't fit into them. I just end up feeling like they think I'm lying about their pants not fitting to make myself feel tall or something. Haha.

I'm still figuring out polls, but I got it up there :p

Ooo. What lovely long legs you must have :D ... and what a pain it must be to buy pants.

I don't know my inseam size, but it ranges from short to very-short. Ugh. It's a nightmare for me to buy pants. I find the ones at Old Navy generally fit me best, especially if I throw them in the dryer.

Oh, and Express because they offer sizes in "short" too. I always feel like a kid though when I go through the check-out.

I am 5'7, all legs, and I wear a 34.

I'm 5'5" and wear regular in just about everything.

I must say, I've never measured my legs in my entire life. I didn't know people did it. I don't wear pants, so I guess I don't have to.

I'm 5'3", but I don't like any pants that are deemed 'short.' I don't know a measurement, but if I had to guess, I'd say 32.

5'8" and leggy. 32-33 suffices but i prefer 34". they're a perfect fit.

5'7" and 33" inseam.

I'm a 29 or 30 I think. I don't usually buy clothes that have the inseam measurement listed so I'm not quite sure.

Stores vary, but generally speaking a 30" is considered petite, 32" is average, and 34" is tall. Some stores, like banana republic, actually make their size 0 and 2s shorter with the assumption that more of their small sized customers are also shorter in stature.

I'm 4'10, and my inseam is 24.5". I always have to hem my pants.

I just measured and my inseam should be about a 26 or 27. I like my pants long though so if I bought pants with inseam length listed, I'd probably get a 28 or 29

5'5" and a 27" inseam. Pants aren't too hard to hem, but gods do I hate the tight hip and boated waist situation. I just went shopping for pants today and that's all I found...I could barely get them up and could have fit a six pack down the back after they were fastened.

It's a good thing that the lovely women of VB create threads like this so I can rant about such inconveniences. :)

I don't really know about inseam. I usually just buy the average or medium length. I am 5'5". I do have a hard time with pants fitting in waist and hips because they use a standard hip to waist ratio and my hips are small compared to my waist (i carry all my weight in my stomach, it sucks). I think it's dumb how women just have vague sizes and men have actual measurements. Women come in many different shapes!

Some stores have longer pants available only on-line. I bought some long pants from express that way. the normal ones were just too short. I don't feel like I'm that leggy; I'm just all around long. It kind of runs in the family. Of four kids I am the short one at 5'10". My younger brother is 6'9". I think he wears a 30X36 or something.

Carb Lover - I bought two pairs of guys' pants recently, actually. Or the girls' pants that come in waistxinseam. It's a lot easier on me, because I could buy a size two that's way too big, way too small, way too short, or way too long.

I wear a 35" inseam and I'm 5'7". Horray for long legs . There are so many great pairs of jeans out there that I will never look good in because of these damn long legs that I have. They're annoying.

i hear that one, i was starting to think maybe i was just abnormally shaped or something. i hate that i have to buy name brand pants to stay away from that effect.

5'5" and my inseam is about 30 inches. Buying petite or short length is usually too short and often buying regular or medium length is too long. So shopping for pants isn't easy for me.

I'm 5'8" and need a 33" inseam, but in a size 6. When I find pants in a tall, they are too big (most places don't make longs smaller than an 8). I also have a short waist (only ~1" between the bottom of my ribs and the top of my hips), so when I do find tall pants in my size, it looks like I've pulled them up to my breasts (the old man look). The lower rise jeans would help, if I can find them in size 6 long.

I don't know where you shop, but all the regulars I've found have a 30" inseam, 28" is petite and 32-33" is tall and longer is ultratall. Land's End is nice because they will hem their pants to most lenghts, but they cost more than off the rack, take time to arrive and include shipping costs even if you need to return them.
