Hmm, it wouldn't give me access to the article. :(
But I can vouch for the hardness of finding work these days.
In the newspaper here it is usually just professions requiring a university degree & several years' experience, entry level things like data entry & cashier that you cannot support yourself on, commission sales/pyramid scheme type deals, & the usual escort/stripper/nude model stuff. Oh & how can I forget, "teach English in Japan".
I'm grateful for my disability pension. If I am ever well enough to work, I'll probably have to go on welfare anyway w/ a job market like this. :(
Oh well.... I hope you are right Vijay & this hardship inspires people to go frugal vegan.

zoebird "you wouldn't want to go to Japan?"
It is hard to tell if those offers are legit. You don't want to go to Japan, and then find out you have a free course in how to teach english in Japan, waiting for you, but no actual job. People are always being lured all over the place with wonderful-sounding offers, that turn out to be not so wonderful as they sounded. At least if you aren't lured too far away, if the offer isn't as good as it sounded, you maybe have bus far to get back home.
I'm feeling really incredibly lucky to have a part-time job now.

I simply find it offensive that I am bombarded w/ the message that to find decently paid employment I must leave my beloved home province for a country far far away & do something I loathe, work w/ children.
I have no abilities w/ children & no interest in leaving NS, which would involve getting rid of my cat, hedgie, 2 guinea pigs & chinchilla.
BTW what's w/ all the efforts to recruit immigrants to high unemployment places of the country like mine? If there aren't enough jobs for the locals, why are newcomers being sought?

soilman and organica:
one of my husband's friends from graduate school teaches english in japan. There are ways to check out the organization hiring, see if the process if legtiamate, etc, before going over there.
also, teaching in a foriegn country isn't always teaching children. my husband's friend now runs an english school for adults in japan. he's very wealthy by japanese standards (and american for that matter). He's lived there for 10 yrs now, starting out as a teacher and then working his way up to director of the school. He likes his job, he was able to take his dog (Coco) with him--though she had to stay in quarentine for a week--and now has married a japanese woman.
of course, i agree that it's annoying to be bombarded with advertising for jobs outside of where you want to work--as if those are the only opportunities. The issues of employment and population are complex. A large problem that we have in the US is related to this and illegal immigrants. There are plenty of jobs for people who want to work for minimum wage or slightly better in slaughterhouses, mushroom or similar farms, fast food restaurants, or factory work. Unfortunately, most americans don't want these jobs or are 'overqualified' for them. So, the government brings in an immigrant population, or looks away with an illegal population, such that these jobs will be filled.
but, this is a basic overview. the issues are really quite complex.
