Ok, whats ETA ? [not estimated time of arrival either] it's something like FYI I presume. I've seen a couple of times today on the board.

Edited to add.
I started using it as soon as I figured it out bc it is so useful. I go back and change my posts so I want to let people know I've added something.

Does anyone have general objections to TLAs (Three-Letter-Acronyms) and the such? I just cringe when I see "BTW, FYI, and ASAP, etc.
I rather like them especially WTF

I think they are somewhat overdone. I think they have more of a place in real-time chat (where typing time is limited) than in forums like VB.
If the other person doesn't know them or can't figure them out, they then are a hassle and/or create confusion instead of promoting clear communication. KWIM?
unless im counting wrong ASAP isnt a TLA.

A normally good source for looking up such acronyms is:
http://www.acronymsearch.com/
It happened to be having problems when I tried to access it just now, though.
Our database is updated every couple of days. There are over 40,000 acronyms and abbreviations in many categories.
Including chat, computer, military, finance, accounting, airports, sports, classified, and more.

Max can answer for himself, but I think he was intending to bring that one in under the "and the such"[?]/"and the like" category.

BTW...if you edit your posts within 60 seconds of submitting them it doesn't show that you edited them with that little tag line (eliminating the ETA for some folks).
see, I just edited this one.

But how can we be sure?
My favorites (by "favorites" I mean "the ones I hate the most") are the embedded acronyms: Acronyms that stand for, in part or in whole, other acronyms.
Example: NetBUI = Network BIOS User Interface (BIOS = Basic Input/Output System). UGH.
A lot of these show up in military. Once, I found an acronym that stood for acronyms, only. Was something like FCDD for FBI, CIA, DoD, and DSA or something like that...
I didn't edit this. Or did I???

KWIM?=Know What I Mean?
Its usage in context was somewhat sarcastic, since I suspected that a large percentage of readers would not understand what I meant by "KWIM." ;)
I'm a large reader and I didn't understand, true.
This is driving me nuts. What the heck does 'emo' stand for? I see it everywhere these days, especially on ebay. Geez, this makes me feel old. :brood:

Whew, thanks! That was driving me crazy. I was wondering why lots of DIY clothes on ebay were listed as 'emo'. I guess it makes a little more sense now, but not much. :p

What about DSL? I think it's something semi-dirty. I've tried searching but all I get is stuff on DSL internet.
