I'm trying to find techno and rap in Russian, Ukrainian, and Polish and I can barley find any. I'm listening to some right now and it's really nice. I just don't know what the hell their saying. I want to look some techno or rap in other languages too, just don't know what ones.
Anyone listens to music in different languages? If so, how do you find it?

I listen to French rap. Try Manau - they have a distinct Celtic influence. It's a huge departure from American rap.
I use Kazaa to download the songs, and Yahoo groups (French Yahoo, of course) for discussion on the artists.
I also listen to a lot of Japanese rock, techno, and pop. There is a shop in my town that sells anime, books, and CDs straight from Japan, and that's my primary source. However, I know pretty much no Japanese, so I don't know what most of the songs are about.
Korean rap is okay, I just can't think of any groups off the top of my head.

Ash did a French version of their song "Candy". The lyrics are different in the French version, and I happen to like them better. I get all gooey when Tim sings "Je t'aime" :D Mmmm, Irish guys singing in French. <3

I think I listen to more music in other languages than I do in English... ^^;;
Japanese pop...including Hamasaki Ayumi, Okui Masami, and tons of other stuff by various artists.
Russian dance/techno/pop...with my favorites being Tatu (in Russian only...not that horrible English release that makes me want to alternately cry and vomit), and Turbomoda.
Swedish dance/synth/pop...very happy, bouncy music...such as Toybox.

Apple, if you're interested in Russian music, I can look through what I have & maybe send you some stuff. I think you can probably find some online, though I dont know of a good place to start looking on the web. Most of the Russian music I have I've either gotten as a gift, or is a mix that someone made me. If you're interested, let me know!

I too listened to Shakira in Spanish class. Ojos Asi. (yeah right! Try picking out what she's saying first time off as a beginner level student. Pfft!)
In my spare time (lol) I also like Arabic/Indian pop/dancy music.
FRENCH, on the other hand, to me, is not a language that lends itself well to popular music. I find the consonants too soft. Perhaps I say that because I am used to hearing endless amounts of ****ty Quebec french rock and pop music ripoff artists. They drive me up the wall.
And, yes. I hate Celine Dion. She plays super non-stop in the ****ing supermarkets here and it's enough to send you around the bend.

Avalon,
Even though as you say I am a pseudo neo-latina, I still have a hard time picking out the words in authentic Spanish songs. (I'm talking songs for adults, not the simple kids' songs.)

but Turbomoda is russian dance-type music that might appeal to you.
I'll see if I can find the URL where I ordered it. I don't know if you'd feel OK about this, ethically, but if you wanted to sample some songs before deciding to buy, I could try to help with that, too. Let me know. ^_^

I heard some Swedish folk bands on NPR a couple of months ago who I really liked, but I didn't catch their names. I think I'll email the station and ask them to list off the Swedish bands they play. :-)

Ohhh, I love lots of music! There's Die Toten Hosen...a German punk band. Nusrat Fateh Ali Kahn...amazing Sufi vocalist. Ayub Ogada, an African singer. Mohammed Rafi...mostly his campy stuff. I like the soundtrack from Run Lola Run..some of the songs are sung in German. I think I might really like Japanese pop, ceryna..I'll check out some of those artists on Kazaa when I get the chance, and WonderRandy, I'm gonna check out Amr Diab too.

I want to know what they sing.
Most music is foreign for me (English).
I used to like Eminem but now I read the lyrics his music changes for me……..

1vegan,
What do you mean about Eminem? How did his music change for you?

I liked the rhythm of the song and the fast sharp way he raps.
But when I rented a CD at the library, and read what he actually says (that I cannot clearly hear) the music feels different.
At first I could not place the “mums spaghetti” but now I can, and it just isn’t the same anymore.

"Mums spaghetti"? Sorry, its been awhile since I read any Eminem lyrics in detail. Is fantasizing about killing your wife something you just can't relate to, and this prompted your dissociation from Eminem's music?

I can relate to wanting to kill people, that’s not it.
My English isn’t good enough to explain this.
(you must have noticed that)
So I’ll try a metafor.
(I’m Vegan)
Some one shows me a pie.
Good looking apple pie.
It’s still warm…sweet smell of warm apples, a pinch of vanilla and cinnamon…
Water runs in my mouth, yummie!
And then they say: great isn’t it? I’ve used extra eggs this time so….
*window ping *
Ooooo, …..eggs…..
And all of a sudden the feeling I have with this pie changes.
(does this make it more clear?)

1vegan,
English isn't your first language? I wouldn't have guessed.
I understand about being sickened at the mention of eggs, and I understand that it's a metaphor, but what in Eminem's songs is the metaphorical equivalent of eggs?

I'll have to think this over, and will be back.

Do you mean that you like the music but now that you understand the words you don't like the song?

It's that bad, huh? I should try to get my hands on some Russian Tatu, then. I'm not crazy about them, but I don't mind that English-language song, so maybe I'd really dig their Russian stuff?

Skylark,
you really made me think....chronological order..
it's not about the eggs, its about a perception/idea you have about something.
The knowledge of the "eggs" does not change the look and smell of the pie, but
the "image" in my head and the feeling changes.
I (sometimes) like hard, cynical (black) humor.
I thought that "raping lesbians, while there screaming let's just be friends" was a
(sic) joke. But according to a magazine i read he's homophobic, and probably
means it. His music is (partly) spilling his frustrations. So when he rapps, " I
slapped you with a gun, but wish it was loaded" he isn't kidding.
Maybe it's just that this knowledge shifts my attention from the tune to the
meaning of the song, or makes me think about his frustrations.
And when my attention shifts, I can not enjoy the song as much as before.
Since the thread on "mrs Elliot/work it" I realised that (a lot) of songs have a
deeper meaning/intention that I don't get.
No, that isn't true.
When I bought a "best of the Beach Boys", I read there was a sexual intention in
"I get around" that was the moment. Up till then I thought they were getting to
places (IE driving around).
Let's take another example of a song that I don't "get"
Counting crows/yellow taxi.
"they paved(paid?) paradise to put up a parking lot. (?)
"I heard a sreendoor slide and a big yellow taxi took my baby away.
What is the relation between the taxi, the heaven, and loosing my baby?
Is he loosing his girl, because she leaves him to live with another guy and to be
in "heaven" with the other guy? And so he realises he should have been more
happy (less demanding) when she was still with him?
Or is it about his baby that died and when to heaven? And is the taxi a symbol
for her soul leaving to heaven?
One thing is clear: I don't understand the English language enough.
So now I know that the word rock has lot's of meanings:
-rock (as stone)
-rock as in rocking chair.
-We will rock you (queen) (rock music)
-rock the boat, don't tip the boat baby
-rock me all night long.(lionel richie)
I never understood:
Aerosmith/love in an elevator.
second floor: hardware, children’s ware, lady's lingerie.
O goodmoring mr Tyler: going "down"? screaming guitars….
Love in an elevator, living it up while I’m going down.
Love in an elevator, loving it up till I hit the ground...
For years I thought: second floor so the lift goes up, what\s the going down part
about?
AC/DC: you want some fun: fire your gun. Is this dirty to?
Eek!
Status Quo: roll over lay down and let me in.
Do they....Do they..really.....gross........
Oh boy….. me playing that air-guitar on this song that means……..oops…..(very ashamed)
I used to like that song to....
Please Skylark, Please tell me: does the “average” American consider all these songs as “dirty” or am I just to much fixated on the (possible) different meaning?

Hey 1vegan... apparently the "going down" part of the Aerosmith song is about a woman going down on a man.....in an elevator.
