I'm just talking to my friend about fur and I seem to recall that in the 80s there was a huge antifur campaign - loads of commercials inculding the ones with the seals being clubbed. Also, PETAs "I'd rather go naked than wear fur" and it seemed to make a HUGE difference on the sales of fur. It kind of went underground. Fur sales are going up and for the most part, it's caused by young kids going and buying them. Why aren't there huge campaigns going on NOW when it's needed???

Good question. I remember that whole Harp Seal uproar. It was a part of the popular culture, big time. Jane Curtin, on SNL News, did this bit about it. "Today, people gathered from all around for the opening of seal killing season, armed with bats, bricks, and clubs. But a bit of bad news: it seems two men slipped on the ice and sprained their ankles. Get well soon, guys."

It's kind of troubling to me that we live in a culture where caring about something, or believing in a ideal, is as fleeting as any other fad. People get bored of making a difference as quickly as the latest pump sneaker. "Morally Bankrupt" doesn't even begin to describe our mainstream culture.

Was it naomi campbell that was a part of that, and then she wore fur down the runway?

oh yeah - a whole bunch of the models that are used 'changed their mind' (a la Cindy Crawford) but at the time that campaign really did have a positive effect.

From what I have seen, Fund for Animals never stopped...even getting negative neiman-marcus ads in large newspapers a couple years ago.

PETA kind of switched to vegetarianism (since I guess the dietary lifestyle no longer had nearly as much bad stigma attached to it) as their mainstream goal with PETA2 and youth campaigns. Anti-fur has just not their main priority.
