This morning I went out and spent about $170 on lingerie when I already have a dresser full plus a side of my closet filled with chemises and other things that need to be hung up.
Oh.. and the worst part is.. I don't even have a boyfriend to wear any of it for. :)

I just last week bought a bag of um..."oregano" for $200.
I then promptly went to Whole Foods and spent another $200. :D

Books I don't have time to read just yet. It's always the books that attack my wallet when I least expect it. They can be sneaky.

you've got to discover libraries! I go online to the library catolog, order whatever books I want (usually there's a copy of just about EVERY book somewhere) and pick them up when they come in. Then I'll go out and buy just the ones I know are "keepers"
Though...I know if I had more disposable income I would spend way too much money at bookstores myself! :D

I'm not sure what the local library systems think of me anymore. :worried: I had issues in my youth with shall we say (cough) on time returns?
I buy mostly used books (curses on having two used shops within two blocks of the home) and I trade as well, but there are those times that I splurge on new books I know I'll want to hold on to. It's an addiction. :)

170 bucks is a lot of money indeed. If you don't have a BF why did you buy it ? If you have the receipts then perhaps you can consider returning it soon ? Hopefully you would have got over your urge for them by now.

Trying to view this from another angle. How often do you spend like this ? What are the other items that you splurge on usually ?

Being sincere here. On my way home today, I dropped into a local dollar store and bought 3 cans of cream soda, some chocolate, chips, pencil lead, cookies etc., all for $10.05. Also, lost a 25 cents coin in the store. I ate one dollar worth of stuff already. Nowadays I am doing this splurge every month or sometimes even every two weeks. Certainly not frugal. On the other hand, I don't feel guilty about this.
What is your latest unfrugal splurge ? Please share here.
Vijay
Did this again today. Bought at the Dollar Store for $13.20 Out of which 5 bucks was really junk food. But I felt a big rush to buy it. 5 Bucks a month acts more like an Anti-Virus against more splurges. So, it seems OK. Consumed 2 bucks worth of stuff already. Apart from Money, this also leads to fat, something I need to remember.

Oh good god, you should NOT have brought this up. I've been spending money like a madwoman. Laptop $1650, japanese hair straightening $420, $1000 vacuum/airpurifier/does everything (i used to sell them so i got a $500 discount from $1500..and i know they work :-)) stepdad a dvd recorder for his birthday $200 (damn those people with birthdays so close to christmas), new remote starter/keyless entry for my car (one i bought last year was junk), $410, I don't want to even think a bout how much i've spent on christmas stuff. I am so...incredibly ...broke. Thank god for the raise at work that's starting Dec 26. Woo. I'm trying to change my spending habits. It's a slow process. But on the bright side, at least it's my own money I spend...right?? I've earned it!
**Oh boy...then there's what i spend on my 4 (had 7) foster cats...i splurge on them everytime i go to the store. Then my dog. Then what I donate monthly to PETA and united way, and what not. Jesus. I should document this stuff. No wonder i'm broke.

They also have movies :-D I've got about 18 books and 5 movies out from my library. Libraries are the most ingenious things ever..

Glad you joined here and posted. I just checked your profile. You are still very young. I spent much more than now when I was younger. However, the earlier you get your spending under control and start saving the better of you are. Please don't delay. You have a long route to cover.
Warm Regards,

I very much agree with you. I know i'm only 22, but I've got a retirement account, and I put about $500 a month into it. Never too early! :-)

Glad you agree. The retirement Account is a very good start. However, realize that these accounts can go up or down.
Also, trimming in other areas, establishing good savings, probably buying a home and getting Financial Independance are all very relaxing. The earier this is done the better. Once, all this is done, then you are free to do as you wish. Given the way things are going today, one can never be sure about jobs and present rate of pay.
(One can also have some fun along the way but this does not need excessive splurging.) On the other hand, being broke is no fun.
I am a Man. But compared to your $400 hair cut, I got my own clippers for about 24 bucks Canadian and cutting my Hair. Before that, hair cut was 12 bucks a month or so with tips.
Please explore all threads in this forum carefully. I am sure you will find a lot of helpful information.

It wasn't a haircut, it was a japanese straightening :-P. For the record, though, I never am in debt. I never spend more than I make. My retirement wont go up or down. That's a retirement savings. My stocks will go up and down. They are separate. I refuse to get roommates, and I will never buy a house alone, so that won't happen anytime soon. I actually did consider buying a house earlier this year, before I moved into this apartment, but I really don't want the full responsibility of a house if i'm the only one there.
On the financial independence issue, I don't know how you define financial independence. I'm not in debt, my car is paid off, I have no student loans left, I did not finance my laptop, I paid for it outright; and i'm definitely not living paycheck to paycheck. While your statement about jobs and pay is mostly true, I'm pretty sure i'll always have a job. I don't mean to sound cocky, but I don't see a shortage of deaf people coming anytime soon. :-D I'm an interpreter for the deaf.

I bought two huge old chimney pots. Because they are pretty and I like the orange colour of them. £6 each. A bargain. My back yard looks more cheerful.

What are chimney pots? Like those terra cotta ones?

My Splurge Continues. I bought salt today for 99cents. Could have got it for about 60 cents in another store. But I was too lazy to walk there in the snow. The exercise would have been good for my fat figure.
Also Romaine lettuce costed $1.59 but I decided to buy it. Could have probably got it for a dollar or so just a fwe blocks down.
Ironically, I finished all 5 cans out of the 6 cans of beverage that I got yesterday.

Where do you live that these things are so cheap??? What do you do for a living?
I live in Canada. There are good prices everywhere, one needs to look for them. This is the big part of Frugal Living.

I guess i'm just curious as to what you do for a living that 99 cents is expensive for something.
It doesn't depend on the profession. (Please check my Profile for my full details) There are so many small things there that cost 99 cents. All these addup over a period of time. Tracking and minimizing this is a part of being frugal.
Before I used to waste Veggies for 5 bucks a week, for several years . In a year this is like $250. So for 5 years it is like $1250. Assuming I didn't want the money, I could ahve atleast donated this money to charity. Careful tracking online greatly helped me reduce this.
Before I sued to splurge for about 5 to 10 bucks a week. The bad thing with my splurges is that I get a lot of fat/sugar in my system. Now, I am down to splurging for say 10 bucks a month due to tracking.

Um this thread is about unfrugal spending...I didn't think it was about trying to guilt people into spending less.

Yes this thread is about Unfrugal Spending and discussing related issues. However, in frugal living there are no Guilt Trips. Every individual situation is different. One can just give feedback and point some considerations to reflect upon. That is all. Since, individual situations are so different a lot of personal discretion is essential ultimately. Also, considering time/convenience each person must determine for their own, the extent to which they are going to be frugal. (In this regard reading Amy D's book, The Complete Tightwad Gazette would help).
Personally, I welcome honest feedback on all my frugal posts, take what is useful and ignore the rest. However, most feedback have greatly helped me in the past.
Hope this explanation helps clarifies things.
Vijay :)
