I haven't done a push-up in over 6 months. I just dropped down and did 40 , then I laid motionless on the floor for 5 minutes.

How many can you do in one set? In my high school days , I could rack off 100. It'll take awhile before I can reach that mark again. :wall:

Everything gets slower as you age.

I can only do 20 or 25 before my arms start shaking like rubberbands.

I don't think I can even do 1 properly. I have done a little weight training in the past just for muscle tone, but I've always been a weakling. My boyfriend thinks it's weird, cause I'm a concert pianist, and I happen to have a pretty huge sound, so my arms are definitely strong in the way a pianist needs to be, but not strong in the way necessary to do pushups!

I can do a lot of regular ones, but if I do special ones (legs on a person next to you, hands centered under chin, overlapping, etc), I can only do a few.

Real, military style pushups? Only about 15 or 20 before I'm done.

On my knees? Probably tons. Never tried 'em this way.

Special pushups? Depends. 15 or so decline pushups. 5-10 "diamond" pushups. Just depends on the muscles it's targeting. My triceps are weak.

I do bench press, so I really don't know how many pushups I could do, and I'm way too lazy right now to find out ;)

Last I tried I could do 5 girl push ups, which was up from being able to do 0. I haven't tried in a while though since injuring my left shoulder. Didn't seem like a good idea.

BTW, girls should do girl pushups and men do straight leg pushups. We have different centers of gravity and straight leggers are bad on our alignment and back. Don't believe me? Get a man to do slow girly pushups. Most of them start crying after 15 :D

The thing is that for the program I'm in at the moment, Junior Miss, we have to do military style push ups.

Oh god. I'm not even going to try. I mean, normally I'd try, but my arms are sore as heck from both side effect of meds and raising them way up high all Saturday night. They're just getting sorer and sorer. o.O

Last time I tried, I could do like 15 or something.. It's sad, when I was in regular school in P.E. class I was the one that did the most pushups.. people were amazed i did 15. lol

I could do 15, 20 maybe. I like to do the knee push-ups more.

Today I did 40 in three sets, only 10 were military style. My arms were really shaking bad too. I've never been good at them, but I'm getting better.

When I was in Kung Fu my Sifu was really into making us do push ups. We did special ones on a daily basis. The plan was:
Start out with 50 finger tip push ups
100 diamond
50 1 arm for both sides
100 regular on inclined logs that were 3 inches wide. (back one higher than the fron one)

I used to go forever if I just did regular. I just tried it now, and after a year or so out of Kung Fu....I can do.......20 strait out! Lol. Man, that really sucks :(.

Cheers.

I can do about 3 girl push ups, and then I collapse.

You should see the tiny weights I lift at the gym! And I'm still in agony. I've never had very good upper body strength.

It's wierd - I have bad upper body strenght, but good upper body flexibility. On the other hand I have good lower body strength (No matter how unfit or fat I get, my calf muscles are always good) but I have terrible lower body flexibility. It's probably why I have back problems - my back is stuck in the middle and is confused!!

wow, you folks all are great! i can do 20 "real" ones (all the way to the floor and back up) and then i can do more "cheat" ones (halfway down and up). i just do the 20 tho usually since i don't want to cheat!

and krista's right: girls should do "girl" pushups!

i don't do push ups so much as i do "chaturanga dandhasana" which is often called "low push up" in vinyasa yoga classes. It can be modified (knees on ground), but it's much harder that way. Holding in the locks is what makes the difference in the posture, as well as tucking the rib cage. Locks are the pelvic floor held in (mula bandha or "root lock") and the transverse abdominal muscles held in (uddiyana bandha). the quadriceps are engagged to help maintain the whole structure of the pose.

when i do western push ups, i can often do only a few--but not because i'm tired, but because i'm not used to that movement, as opposed to chaturanga dandhasana. I prefer chaturanga and do a number of variations:

chaturanga to up dog back to chaturanga (say, 20 or so repititions--exhale, chaturanga, inhale upward dog, exhale chaturanga, etc).

chaturanga to down dog back to chaturanga (say 20 or so of these--exhale chaturanga, inhale down dog--though generally you exhale to down dog)

chaturanga with one leg up to and from down down (20 or so of these)

and then finally chaturanga with one arm (only about 4 of these before i loose it--but then, i always do them last, and i'm pretty much chaturanga cooked by then).

so how many chaturangas is that? 60 some odd? and that's just early in practice--there are still transitional vinyasas (probably about 20 of those), and then also arm balances (i'm having fun working on them).

i dunno--are push ups the only version of noticing fitness and strength?

here's a picture of chaturanga: http://yogadancer.com/Pages/Dandasana.shtml#Chaturanga

I tried this... I did 12 before I called it quits and said thats enough for today. Yeap, I'm that lazy... I'll try again some other time.
