Hi

I want to make this cakes for my sons birthday, but I am not much of a baker so need to check a couple of things, sorry if these are daft questions!

Should I use plain flour or self raising flour?

Is baking soda the same thing as baking powder or bicarbonate of soda?

TIA

I haven't made this cake, but I think I can help with your questions.

1. Use plain flour, that is what is called for
2. Baking soda is NOT the same thing as baking powder, but it IS the same as bicarbonate of soda

From http://www.pastrywiz.com/archive/recipe/0120.htm:

What is Self-rising flour?

Self-rising flour is all-purpose flour with added salt and leavening (baking powder).

You will notice that recipes that call for self-rising flour do not call for baking powder.

Make your own self-rising flour

For 1 cup self-rising flour use:

1 cup all-purpose flour
1 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
a pinch of salt

Made this recipe in cupcakes today... didn't turn out quite as good as I expected but it was edible nonetheless! Used Pamela's Confetti Frosting Mix (http://www.veganessentials.com/catalog/pamelas-confetti-frosting-mix.htm) for the frosting and I think I made that too runny... maybe that's why it didn't come out as delicious as expected?

I think I will stick to using egg substitute in regular mixes that are dairy-free.

Instead of frosting, I spread a jar of Smucker's marshmallow topping( which I was pleasantly surprised to discover was vegan)

No way! :nana: :hamster:

Tomorrow is my Mum's birthday and I made this for a mini family celebration tonight. It was so easy and wonderful; my omni family couldn't even tell that it was vegan and thought that it was just a delicious chocolate cake.

The only issue was that I messed up the cooking times and a bit of the middle wasn't cooked properly, but that was my fault for guessing the conversion from Fahrenheit to Celsius instead of using an online converter. In the end it didn't matter because the gooey middle tasted like chocolate sauce/pudding and Mum thought it was deliberate. :D

I'll definitely be making this again!

Did you make it as one big cake or in two layers? I haven't had much success cooking it one piece, but cooking it in two layers works really well (and many people like the extra icing in between!)

Thanks for the tip! I did make it as one big cake, which might help to explain the gooey centre. Next time I'll try it the layered way.

tried making this yesterday - halved the amounts but used full amount of cocoa - it made enough for 14 cupcakes and 1 layer of small round cake- must make a massive cake if you use the full amount!!!

managed to overcook it slightly as forgot to look what time i put it in the oven (doh!!) but the not overcooked bits were yummy and kids were impressed!! will definately give it another go.

It's enormous. :D We've still got a chunk left in the fridge, despite the fact that everyone in my family has been eating slices for afternoon tea every day and I made it about five days ago.

Bit of a long shot- but does anyone have nutritional information for this cake?

I don't, but there are some sites onlines (maybe even FitDay?) where you can figure out the stats for a recipe.

Did this yesterday as a marble cake. Was a bit worried about the vinegar, but put it in all the same. Result: yum! And not the slightest taste of vinegar! Thanks for sharing!

Made this a few weeks ago for a birthday cake. It turned out yummy :) I made a few changes though...I added vegan chocolate chips and walnuts into the batter. I used vanilla and chocolate frosting (the vegan dunkin hines kind) for the middle layer and the top. The cake received rave reviews, thanks for the recipe

Neurotika: I put chocolate chips and pecans into this cake once, except I must have used too many chocolate chips. It became fudge brownies! Yummy!

Meanwhile this is my ground recipe for chocolate cake. Last friday I made id substituting 200g flour with 200g grinded hazle nuts and added 150g of cacoa instead of 100g. The batter is less moist but after baking the cake is still damp, really yummy! Finally I added some chocolate glaze, it turned out really, really sweet :D!

I made this as a birthday cake with cherry jam for filling and a chocolate icing, and it was a big success! All 5 omnivores who ate it said it was delicious (and asked for a second slice). I will definitely be making this again. I substituted 1 cup of water for soya milk, and added extra cocoa. I will probably experiment more next time, since a lot of people here have come up with good suggestions.

Bit of a long shot- but does anyone have nutritional information for this cake?

I found the same recipe, but halved, here, and it includes a nutritional info chart: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Vegan-Chocolate-Cake/Detail.aspx
