This might be a dumb question, but what is a layered cake? Is this where you cook 2 of the cake and then put one on top of the other?

Yes a layer cake is when you bake more than one of the same size and stack them with filling in between. Or slice one higher cake horizontally and fill in between.

I might start my own thread for this, but I recently made this cake for my friends birthday. Except I "soaked" it in amaretto by poking some holes in it and slowly pouring the liquor on top.

I then made butter shots frosting using the butter shots, margarine, and powdered sugar.

I made a dip in the top layer of the cake, frosted it and then before i served it I poured a shot of bacardi 151 on top into the dip and lit it on fire.

It was beautiful, tasty and fun to eat!

I made this for my birthday cake! It turned out super and all the omnis loved it :) I put in almost double the cocoa, so it was very rich, and it did collapse a little but I covered it in icing so no one could tell!

Yeah I use 2 2/3 cups flour and 3/4 cup of cocoa instead. I've made it four times and it always comes out awesome! I make cupcakes and take them to school with this recipe and omnis just love it. Most of them never guess it's vegan unless I tell them :D

I've never made this recipe before but it seems to be a favorite..
I'm going to play a little game with my omnivore boyfriend tonight or tomorrow,
by baking this recipe and making a non-Vegan cake for him
to see if he can actually tell the difference..
What do yall think?

Don't bother. Just make this one, it's the best recipe around, eggs or no eggs ;)

If you want to play a game, don't tell him it's vegan until after he's had it and proclaimed how great it is. :p

I wish, but I already ruined that easy route by expressing how much I wanted to make a Vegan cake all week. He would have thought something was up, I don't make cakes out of the blue-- I'm more of a cookie girl.

By the way though, the cake game is already underway
first one's in the oven, now

Good luck! Let us know what happens :)

Sadly, he could tell the difference, but he tried the Vegan one first and liked it-- eating the whole piece

He said you could kind of taste the milk product in the non-Vegan one, even though I didn't get a milk chocolate recipe, nor did the recipe call for any milk.

I bet if I'd gotten some kind of dark chocolate mix it would have been harder to tell the difference. It was probably because the Vegan cake was so much darker (and better!)

I only assume it's better, though. Didn't try the non-Vegan cake. (it looks chalky/too light)

See the difference:
Vegan cake--

and the Non-Vegan Cake--

Anyway, this was my first time making this recipe and it was amazing. I love it with chocolate and so I'm probably going to make some sort of almond-y or raisin-y cake with it.

Wow the vegan cake looks so much better than the non vegan one!

So he could tell the difference, but what one did he like better? ;)

I made cupcakes for my birthday and frosted them with vegan "buttercream" frosting, and my friends loved them! Great recipe, so easy, quick, and delicious!

Guess what?! My stepdad wants ME to make THIS cake for his birthday!!!

And quote, "Dude, don't do a weird experiment. Don't add chocolate chips, or nuts. Don't add coffee to it, no strawberries on top of it either. Make it exactly like you did for your birthday. It's the most perfect cake ever."

:D

I'm going to make this either tonight or tomorrow! I usually make a quite pricey and little more complicated choco cake from ppk. We'll have to see if this one matches up :D

I made this for dinner tonight for my other half's omni folks, and it went down well. Yum yum yum. Whoever thought up this recipe is a genius.

Finally got round to making this. I followed the recipe exactly but did 8tbsp of cocoa instead of 6. I had to cook it for 40 minutes even though I split it into two tins, but that was fine. What I did find was that it kind of had a salty taste. I'd definitely not add the salt next time. I frosted it with a chocolate frosting and the saltyness isn't noticeable. Nice and moist and very yummy. Eating some now.

Still doesn't beat the cake from PPK, but it's great if I need to make a cake and fast. Also way cheaper.

I made this today, and it really was absurdly easy! It came out moist and fluffy. Instead of frosting, I spread a jar of Smucker's marshmallow topping( which I was pleasantly surprised to discover was vegan) on top. Very tasty.
This cake has lots of possibilities. I'm thinking tofutti cream cheese frosting with cherries or strawberries on top.

I made the cake yesterday and I love it! It is even better then I thought it would be!
I used the frosting recipe form the PETA website and it was just delicious!
Even my brother how is a convinced meateater liked it!

I made the cake yesterday too... There are no leftovers, so I guess the cake was great even to omnis *smile*. But next time I add some more chocolate to it, yesterday I just added some mashed chocolate chips in addition.

There's a recipe on vegweb.com that's almost identical to this, and I made it today for my stepmom's birthday. My family LOVED it! And they didn't even know it was vegan! I made a basic chocolate frosting, then liberally covered the whole cake with mini chocolate chips. It was so much better than any box cake mix I've ever used, and it was just as easy.

Made this once again as my friend's birthday gift. I drew a frosting penguin on it and she absolutely adored it! Every time I make this cake, it gets a little bit better.

Hi

I want to make this cakes for my sons birthday, but I am not much of a baker so need to check a couple of things, sorry if these are daft questions!

Should I use plain flour or self raising flour?

Is baking soda the same thing as baking powder or bicarbonate of soda?

TIA
