Yeah, running is one of my passions. I've been doing it consistently for about a year or so, and am now training to be able to run a half. It's definitely a very calming exercise, and makes you feel really good afterwards. Not to mention that you can have almost a guilt-free appetite.

Yea... that is awesome.. so when are you thinking of doing your first half? (I envy you) - I did mine a few weeks back.. I spent most of the year training for it, did a few 10K's - it was fun getting ready.. but nothing would have prepared me for it... I actually got misty at the start line (2 min before the horn)... it was just such a moving experience... knowing you can finish just hits you unlike anything you've ever done...

hey, good luck.. do you have a 1/2 in mind that your planning on doing?

Yes, I run. I did my first 1/2 marathon last year, and will do it again this December. I've also done 10k, 8 mile and 10 mile races. No one has convinced me yet that running a full marathon is a good idea. I imagine it feels emotionally really good to accomplish one, but my primary concern is always my health and it seems like running 26 miles is almost a way of abusing one's body, rather than doing something good for it. I lost a toenail from my first 1/2 marathon. I hate to think of the impact of a full marathon on my feet, joints, etc. I suppose some people gain more satisfaction from pushing their bodies to the limit than from working towards long-term health, but that's not my motivation for running. Any thoughts on this?

I had in mind maybe early next year. I also want to race in some 5k and 10ks before I run a half-marathon.

I don't have a specific half-marathon in mind, although ideally, something local would be great.I live in Southern New Jersey, and would travel as far as Pennsylvania for a half (that includes New York too). Any specific ideas?

I agree with you, to a point, although my ambition is definitely to run in a marathon atleast once during my lifetime. 26 miles does seem like a very unnatural distance, and it takes a hell of a lot of training to run a marathon.

I disagree with you, though, when you say that people are sacrificing long term health to run in a marathon. The training for a marathon is ardous, difficult, and takes a long time. I highly doubt that if you run a marathon that you are not looking at your long term health.

I didn't mean necessarily that everyone who runs marathons is not concerned with long-term health, although a guy I know at work who runs marathons seems much more concerned with accomplishing a goal and pushing himself than with his health. Certainly there are marathon runners with other motivations though. Rather, I was questioning whether running marathons is in fact good for long-term health.

Hey there!

I love to talk about running. I'll talk your ear off about it. :)

I have ran two full marathons and am signed up for my 3rd (in Dec) and my 4th (in March, the LA marathon).

I have also ran 5 or 6 half marathons, a sprint distance triathlon, and a couple of 10k's. I'm slow though so don't ask any questions on speed. :)

If you want to talk and just babble about running just PM or reply. I could actually use somebody to babble with because I have been lacking motivation in the middle of my training for my next thon.

Slynny is a member who has good advice about running too, and I know there are a few others that have ran marathons. :D

There is nothing like the feeling of crossing that finish line. It is quite addicting actually.

Happy running!

I'm a runner too and I love it! I'm on varsity for my school's cross country team and I really like it. I'm hoping to do a half marathon this spring (or maybe sooner). I hope to do a marathon in the future, but for right now am happy with running 5-10 miles a day. Mmm.. running.. my parents think I'm crazy, but I love running. :smitten:

I also love to run!! I have been struggling with an injury for about a year, and I have recently gotten the ok to start up again. I think running a marathon is very hard on your body, but it is a worthwhile cause. I would like to run at least one marathon before I die. I would say that if you are interested in training for one, just take it slow. I know people who didn't train enough and ended up injuring themselves trying to push through anyway. It's no fun to not be able to run because you ran yourself into an injury (believe me I know!)!

Back before my ed (not to be confused with clickman's ed definition :D) I used to run all the time. I ran my first full marathon in the beginning of 9th grade and LOVE it! My first half was in 7th. I loved to be on xc team of my highschool, and loved everything about it. I still do! I suggest training up to a full if you really want to try it out, they are VERY fun. If anyone lives in a cold climate, my favorite time to race is in thw winter when it is pretty cold...so relaxing. Man I wish I still lived in Chicago and still ran.

Cheers.

Hey Dcpsoguy:

I live up in Canada... so I'm not sure what you have going on out there... but, we have a few runners websites here that allow you to not only check each race/marathon, but register online, view the course info.. find out what goodies are included (t-shirts are always nice, and sometimes they give everyone a medal)... they also have photos, etc... we usually use the runningroom.com - or runners choice website (mostly Canadian) - but I'm sure if you drop by some running stores, or do a yahoo/google search, you'll find tons of stuff in your area.. during the summer, you usually have a few races a month to choose from, and a few marathons too...

Good luck, and let me know how you make out :)

PS: Your gonna love it... I find running almost as mentally soothing as meditation.. is really a great way to stay fit in every way.

Hey Emilie:

Yea, thats pretty much my goal too... one full (before I die)... I'm starting my training for it now...

There are a few great sites that cater to new runners... HAL has an awesome training program for amature (first time - marathon runners)... check it here here:

I started running this year using a 5k fundraiser for the animal sanctuary that I volunteer at as my inspiration. I trained lightly for it for 3 months and finished the 5k with a decent time. I used to have a fair amount of trouble with my endurance, but now, even with pretty light training, I've run as much as 6.8 miles in one stretch. My goal by spring was to be able to run a 10k, so I'm happy I've already reached that goal. :)

My "new goal" is to be able to run a half-marathon by next fall, though I suspect it may be a difficult goal.

Question: what's your favorite post-run sports drink? Something tells me there's gotta' be something better than Gatorade...

If you want more support from a bunch of runners, you can go to www.coolrunning.com or www.runnersworld.com

They both have forums like this one with newbie sections for you to ask questions, gain knowledge, and get motivation.

I belong to both of those forums :). They are really good and have helped me out with some issues also. These three boards are the best on the internet I say. Please join up guys :). That would be cool.

Cheers.

"I run the marathon till the very last mile....." Sorry I had to. But yeah, I run daily, getting around 5-7 miles, but no marathon. I always did want to train for one, though (and of course follow through with the actual marathon ;) )

Do you have the same user name on those?
I am mostly a lurker at coolrunning although I use their running log. I really like the way they track the miles on your shoes.
At runners world I post mostly in their womens forum and sometimes in thier marathon forum. :) I guess I wouldn't see you post much in the womens forum. :D

I read both of those communities as well, but haven't posted there yet.

I recently got a Garmin Forerunner 201 and have totally geeked out with it... I've run far more frequently since I got it than I did before.

My husband gave me a forerunner for my birthday (in May)! I love that thing.

Almost everybody in our pace group (in my marathon running club) has one now. Every week, somebody else gets a new one. :D

yup the gps watches are pretty cool!

Richard, I've been running on and off for 20 years, a good amount of road racing, mainly 5K's. I just ran my first marathon in May 04...my next will be in May 05. The marathon is all about determination...you just have to set your mind and body to it. You can always PM me, I can go on and on about running. Encouragement and support from a group can be your greatest aid. I got mine from the peeps here on vb.

I am just getting into running. I broke my collarbone and couldn't surf, so I started running, and it kinda stuck. I would LIKE to be able to do a half marathon in June 2006, but at the moment I would not consider it a goal, as I struggle with our 5k meets.

This summer I watched a great uncle and seond cousin do a full marathon, and a second cousin do a half marathon (the one I would like to enter) and it was pretty motivational. I never would have though i could do it, but seeing some of the people that did it (walking when i saw them) made me not cross the idea out.
