"Investigators for TRAFFIC, a wildlife trade monitoring network, say they found more than 1,000 ivory items advertised each week on eBay and other auction Web sites."

"Conservationists calculate that, based on the number of items seized and sold, as many as 4,000 elephants, hippos and other ivory-bearing animals are being killed each year for their tusks."

Elephant ivory is still (federally) legal to buy and sell so long as it was imported into the US prior to July 9, 1989. Much of the ivory you see on Ebay is pre ban stuff or new pieces cut and carved out of other, larger, lawful pieces that were imported prior to the ban.

True. I just did a quick search for ivory on ebay and I came up with a lot of stuff that was described as an antique.

I was going to say - I doubt much of the ivory on ebay is "fresh."
