i need sugestions on winter vegetables to grow. i live in a super temperate northern california area (the "worst" weather we get is some really hard rain occationally in winter). my dad (a hooked up landscaper) says he will get me any seeds i ask for... i haven't torn out the summer crops yet but i need to plan out the winter ones... what do you suggest? all ideas welcome! :vebo:

How about some nice squash?

<<<comes from generation upon generation of farmers, and that's the best I could come up with. :)

You could probably Google something like "winter vegetables" and get some ideas that way too.

Get Steve Solomon's book on winter gardening in the Maritime Northwest. Northern California is the southern most area covered in the book.

Otherwise:
Peas of course.
Fava beans
If you can rig up a cover of some sort to keep excess wet off of the plants you can do mixed greens and endive. I have a collection of windows in frames that I put over my greens with cinder blocks. They really need protection from the rain then they do from the elements.
Overwinter broccoli and cauliflower should do fine. It is late to put them in here.
If you have brussels sprouts growing already, trim them up and let them grow. If you get frost they will get as sweet as candy.

Bok choi and other asian greens will grow in winter in a temperate climate. So will silverbeet (kale).
