So I've never cleaned an oven before since I've always rented and don't really put anything messy in the oven. However, the previous owners of the house I recently bought left kind of a serious mess in the broiler of my oven which I want to clean. Now I seem to remember that the regular oven-cleaning products they sell in the store are not environmentally friendly. Does anyone know of an environmentally friendly oven cleaner?

I thought I remembered reading someone recommend that you put a small bowl of ammonia inside the oven and just let it sit overnight. It will supposedly loosen a lot of the grime and you can wipe it off more easily. I think it is environmentally friendly, too--or at least better than commercial oven cleaning products. Be sure to have a window open and plenty of ventilation when you open the oven.
