Jinga,

The low-carb industry is brainwashing us all! My husband and I have both been trying to lose weight, and last night he said, "we probably eat way too many carbs - maybe we should cut back on our bread intake". The funny thing is, it takes us like 2 weeks to go through a loaf of bread! AND it's whole wheat bread!

My husband is also a vegetarian! :wall:

Darn him! I actually have had to practice a lot of self-control to keep from strangling peoples necks. I know the truth about weight loss, why low-carbers think it works (ie-reduced calories), have lost weight on a low-fat HIGH carbohydrate diet, but its still a struggle to fight the messages we receive everyday ... food, body image, or otherwise.

I was just thinking about this topic today...and was so glad to find this thread. This low-carb mania is making me crazy!!!!!!!!

I absolutely can't stand to hear about it, for even one more day! "Carb" this and "carb" that...I think you guys are right when you say that most people don't even know what a carb is.

My mom is tryint to do the South Beach Diet for I don't know, like the 307th time now...and she fails every time after about 2 weeks. Sometimes she only makes it a couple of days. I am a veterinarian, and I try to explain to her why making herself ketotic is not a good idea. I mean...when diabetic cats and dogs come into the hospital, one of the first things we do is check their urine for ketones. If they have ketones....they stay in the hospital on IV fluids, and have their blood glucose checked every 2 hours while we regulate their insulin. If their not ketotic, they go home with new insulin and diet instructions. So......ketotic=VERY SICK!!! Why do people want to make themselves very sick?!? It is so lame!

Whew...okay, I'm done now. I feel a little better.
Thanks.

ketosis also makes you smell like ammonia--which to me comes off as cat pee smell.

sure, the process is ok for a leaning-phase in exercise, but it's not a life-long diet. similar to atkins really. yes, it works for a short time, but it's not meant to be a long term diet.
