Subway in the Uk isn't all that widespread. I hear that it's quite big in the USA, but in the UK, there's not that many of them. There's always been a subway in Blackpool, for quite a few years now. I never went there. And now they've opened one up in the middle of nowhere - Cleveleys, the neighbouring town to the village that I live in.

So I decided to go and try it out, and see what Subway was all about. I was expecting some kind of crappy fast food style thingy. And man, was i wrong. The menu was kinda confusing, so I asked a membe rof staff for a bit of help. Would i go for a veggie delite or a Veggie Max. I went for the veggie max, and then I got asked how i wanted it - The bread I wanted, footlong or 6", and asked what salad i wanted on it, and whether I wanted any cheese, so I went with some lettuce, red onion, green pepper, and then i noticed some jalapeno peppers. Scwhing!!! This and a veggie max patty on wholewheat bread. i neglected a futher offer to put sauce on the sandwich. For £2.70, i did think it was a little expensive, but then again, my family is from yorkshire, so i have an aversion to spending money.

I took one bite into the sandwich, and the taste was somewhat pleasant. I'd mainly got the bread and the patty in my mouth. I swallowed, and took another bite, catching some of the salad this time around. Success!!! It tasted quite nice. The jalapeno peppers added a really nice kick to the sandwich, and i'm glad that they have them.

To sum it all up, I'd give it a 7/10 The patty was a bit crappy, I'll admit that. I don't think it is vegan, but it will be vegetarian. But the patty does go very well with all the different salads, and what sets subway apart from other fast food places is that you can customise your sandwich to get whatever the f**k you want! How schwing is that? I was asked a barrage of questions about what I wanted, and i went in there, not really knowing what I wanted. Quite daunting, but I got a pretty good sandwich out of it.

And what sets subway apart from fast food places is that you don't feel like you're eating sh*t. The lettuce on mcdonalds burgers is just sh*tty iceberg lettuce. At subway, it's all good. The bread seemed very fresh, the lettuce seemed fresh. It all seemed fresh, and i didn't feel lie i was eating greasy junk - I was eating proper food. And subway is much better than other sandwich bars. I neve rhave sandwiches, simply because "vegetarian" means egg & cress, or cheese & pickle. At subway, they combine the finer parts of a sandwich with the less finer part of fast food, and do it well enough to satisfy the vegetarian customer. And the inclusion of jalapeno peppers was brilliant.

I'll definitely be eating at subway again. It's quitea unique little establishment. It's fast food, but it isn't fast food, because it's sandwiches. Fresh sandwiches, healthy if you want them like that, and not healthy if you prefer them that way, and it's much better than other sandwich places where they'll make you a generic crappy sandwich.

I have a new favourite place to eat.

FYI for those who care. The veggie burger patties in Subway in the US are not vegan.

Hopefully someday someone will start one of those e-petition sites to convince the company to change the recipie.

I don't know what they are in the UK, but they'll at least be vegetarian. I somehow doubt they'll be vegan though.

I always get the veggie delight. Costs 3.19 for a foot long. And its vegan, so no worries. I've never saw the veggie max at any of our Subways.

The subway's here pretty much s*ck. I've noticed flies flying around the food. I did eat there once, but white bread is not my thing and the wheat bread has honey in it. The worker didn't seem to mind when I asked her to change her gloves, wipe the area where my sub was being prepared and wash the knife. I thought that was good.

the veggies at subways here usually are kind of weird, definitely not "fresh" seeming. sometimes the tomatoes have almost no color.

I eat a veggie delight sub every once in a while, but I too don't like white bread, and it is the only vegan option.

I will give it a go sometime. I tried the falafel in Starbucks and it was great- though £3.45 to eat in. Wont do that too often!!!

I love the veggie delite! I get like midnight cravings for them. I'm really in love with subways lettuce too, I don't know why, there isn't anything special about it, I just crave it for some reason.

They don't have veggie max around here, but I don't think I would get it if they did, one of the things I like about the veggie delite is that there isn't a patty.

Loki, im not sure if it differs depending on the particular Subway you go in, but the last time i went to one (bout 6 months ago) here in Manchester, the gal behind the counter said the patty thing was vegan (that it said so on the box). Still didnt have it though, just stuck with the salad. The staff were really helpful though, and told me which bread i could have etc.

I've had mixed experiences with Subway, even from the same location. Sometimes everything is nice and fresh, sometimes it is kind of bland (as in, colorless tomatoes as ynaffit pointed out, or slightly brown lettuce). Service varies also.

But of the fast food places, it's definitely preferred over other more popular places.

I absolutely adored Subway as an omni. As a vegan though, I'm not pleased. I guess it's because I don't like a lot of their vegetables, like pickles or green peppers or olives, and I don't know which sauce goes well with a veggie delite. I basically ended up with a lettuce on white bread sandwich, which sucked.

Every time I went to Subway in the past, I always got one with meat. Since I've stopped eating meat, I've never known what to get at a Subway. I could never quite put my finger on it, but it always felt like something was missing every time I had a Veggie Delite. I always put only lettuce and tomato on mine, with honey mustard, because I don't really care for the other stuff, so it was probably deserved to feel like that.

A few weeks ago, I went with my fiance's family to Subway, and noticed under their "Local Specialties" an item called Veggie Patty. It's a rice patty with other things in it (don't know the rest), but it's heated. I had it once and it was good, so I now had something to get that didn't make me feel like I needed another one.

I've found that even without the veggie patty, not many places have it, I can simply ask them to put on carrot sticks and chopped egg on it also, along with Ranch dressing, which fills me up. Yummy.

I don't like the patties so I make my own subs at home and they are just as good and cheaper

£2.95 to take out though. (or something like that - I've only been once.) They put it in this bag though, and I felt like such a wastrel for chucking it two minutes later. But three squid, or three squid fifty is still pretty exorbitent!

I dunno if this veggie max thing is new or what, or whethe rit's just a couple of subways which have it. the menu is quite cumbersome, and it's difficult to find your way around it. I don't see any mention of it on the subway.co.uk website, anyhow.

I seemed to enjoy subway anyway. The one I went to was a fairly quiet one, so it may not have been as scummy as inner city establishments might be.

EDIT: I've just found some info on Erin's site (sword2skyvegan.net) which may explain the veggie max in alittle more detail:

Italian Bread contains no animal derived ingredients. The Wheat Bread contains honey, which is the only ingredient that may be considered animal derived. The deli style roll may contain egg and honey, which are the only ingredients that may be animal derived. The Fruizle smoothies are vegan.Subway restaurants have the choice of offering a few other menu items besides those on the national menu. Among them is a meatless burger. The most popular brands are Wholesome & Hearty's Gardenburger and Morningstar Farms' Veggie-Max. Both of these contain egg whites and cheese. Vegan Boca Burgers or White Wave soy turkey subs may be offered at certain Subway restaurants in certain areas. The "turkey" in the soy turkey sub is vegan but the soy cheese used on it contains casein (a milk protein). If you are interested in seeing a veggie burger in your area, contact your local Subway restaurant.

I like Subway. It's nice to have a fast-food place that's semi-healthy.

I'd never been in a Subway before moving to Germany. Had one a month in that I enjoyed, but then nothing for a year. A new shopping center/mall opened near my work about four months ago, and the best bit about it the Subway and the electronics store which are side by side. At least once a week myself and my US colleague go munching. They've got to know me now and change their gloves without me having to resort to my combination of pidgeon german and hand signals. There are three reasons I enjoy my weekly visit; shop bought bread is generally very crusty here, and it great to get some soft bread, Subway is the only place that sells Walker's crisps (potato crisps) and being able to get a fix of Salt & Vinegar is a blessing in disguise, finally a fix for root beer. My weapon of choice is spicy white veggie delight with all veggies including olives and jalepenos, plus american mustard. Lovely jubbly.

Got to love the lettuce, red onion, cucumbers, green peppers, pickles, jalapeno peppers and mustard on white. In fact, I had one today. :D

It takes a while to get the combination of the things you have on it right.. but once you find what you like its all good!

In Australia (not sure if they have this other places, but I know we dont here) you can have grated carrot or beetroot on your sub too! I love beetroot so it was great!!

I had Subway a lot there (Same with Salad Kebabs.. omg so good), but the last one I had the bread was SOOO hard and gross, and I got a diet coke with it and all I could taste was water *shudder* call me fussy, but I haven't found any water anywhere that I like besides my cities (we have no crap in ours, its something like 3rd purest in the world.. or something.. and it tastes just like bottled water.. no bull).. So that was kinda dissapointing.. But I wasn't very hungry anyway so it all worked out XD.

Subway is great! I'm glad you've discovered it Loki!
