View Full Version : Neck injury?

So I think I hurt my neck yesterday at Hershey Park on one of the most vicious wooden roller coasters ever made.
It hurts to turn my head too far in either direction, and it feels like I have to crack my neck, almost like you would your knuckle or back. Is this something serious worth going to the doctor for, or will it gradually go away? Thanks, I'd like to enjoy the rest of my vacation pain-free if at all possible!

If it doesn't feel better in a day or so, I'd go to the doctor - on the slim chance that it is a serious injury, you'll want the injury documented. Just to be on the safe side - there are people who have broken their necks and not realized it for weeks!
Sounds like whiplash, though.
I have had neck problems for years and it always feel the same way you just described - popping can relieve the pain short-term, but you'll pay for it big time in weakened tendons later, so try to resist.
The only thing that helps me when my neck "goes out" is rest and perscription strength ibuprofen. Deep tissue massage feels great at the time, but like popping, it just leaves my neck more sore afterward.
My poor neck is so weak that I can throw it out by simply turning my head wrong, so whatever you do (I repeat) please don't pop it. I had a habit of cracking my neck for years (it felt sooooo good) and now I'm dealing with the consequences.
I hope you feel better!

I definitely don't pop my neck and don't plan to! Thanks for the advice, I'll probably try some aspirin tonight and go tomorrow if it doesn't feel better. I have no idea whether I should go to a specialist or just a regular doctor, though. Any ideas?

I'd go to the emergency room to begin with, especially if you are on vacation and don't know which gps are reputable around there. I don't generally trust gp's - some of them seem to know a tiny bit about everything, but a whole lot about nothing. The docs at the ER can run x-rays, let you know if it is "just whiplash" or whether you need to see someone as a follow-up. If it needs any follow-up care, I'd see an orthopedist.

If there is an urgent care there, that might also be a good option.
