Hi Hamsters! Never posted in this thread before...didn't know what a "hamster" was...(only kind of do now!)!
On Monday I made the committment to do some sort of exercise for at least 20 minutes every day! (mostly walking baby in the stroller). Today is day 4 and I plan to walk to my baby group - about an hour's walk! :) It feels great to exercise!!

i dragged my tired lazy butt to the gym for 20 minutes of elliptical about 30 of resistance training. Maybe I was just tired, but I was running pretty hard (~70 rpms) on the elliptical and I my throat got tight and i got very wheezie and thought I would have to stop. I am prone to bronchial asthma, but generally just when I have a respiratory infection. Fortunately I was almost done at that point, and it got a little better when i slowed down drastically (~47), and cleared up after i stopped and drank some and splashed water on my face. Should I be concerned? Pack albuterol?
I forget who asked... but I do the cardio first and the resistance second. Otherwise my muscles are too worn out to finish my cardio. I usually do 20-30 min cardio, then do a few machines for upper body, then one for legs (i do hamstrings, quadricepts, hip adductors and abductors), then more upper, then back to legs, so i give the muscles a break back and forth.

I put this is the other one... but I guess I'll put it here too.
Today was 35 min free weights and 45 min tempo run. I don't know how far, but I was definitely going a sub 8 min mile pace, so over 5 1/2 miles I would guess. There will be 10-15 min of yoga/stretching before bed if I want to be able to move in the morning!

3 miles today!
Still looking for advice from runners on how to increase my time.
Also, I'm noticing a bit of tightness in my achilles tonight - any hints?
Take gentle care,
Jes

Hi Hamsters,
Uhhh, I re-read last post and I feel silly because it didn’t make sense. The reason I chew the minty gum while I run is because it helps clear my sinuses. It would be much worse if I didn’t chew gum…but regardless of what I do to elevate the problem I still have to clear my throat all the time.
Anyhoo, I had a great day today at the waterpark!!! We went to Noah’s Ark in the Wisconsin Dells. Lots of stairs, lots of lifting tubes up the stairs, lots of swimming, lots of walking, sore feet!!! The weather for a change was great! And there was almost no one there so we didn’t have to stand in line and got to climb the stairs 10 X as much. Yay! :sunny:
Welcome to the Hamsters colorful :hamster: If you want to know what a Hamster is just go to the first page of the thread and read the mission statement…that sums it up. If you have any other questions feel free to PM me.
Rabid_child, are you fighting off some virus or something? Or is it possibly Exercise-induced asthma? Have you had a problem with this before? I have breathing difficulty very often while running. I don’t contribute it to asthma but rather that I psyche myself out sometimes, especially when I run with much better runners, or when I try to push myself to hard.
Go Hamsters!!!

Jes, do you want to increase your time or you milage? I'm not sure...in either case you need to go slowly. Is it pain or just tightness in your achilles? Either way the first thing I would do is Ice it. If it still feels wierd the next day, then take the day off...continue this until you feel comfy running on it again. Don't run until it feels normal, you can do seroius damage to your achilles if it is damaged and you continue to run on it. Take Care.
And stretch it...as well as everything else before you run.

Knowing my immune system - I'm constantly fighting something off. But I'm not feeling symptomatic of anything. I have exercise induced hives, but I've not had exercise induced asthma before. I've felt a little tightness in my chest sometimes, but nothing to the extent that it was on Thursday. I guess I'll just monitor it and see what happens, and maybe throw my albuterol in my gym bag just in case.

Today was tennis again for about an hour...All I had to eat today was an apple so I didn't have much gas in the tank.

45 min of Pilates and 50 min rollerblading today.
Jes- I'm guessing that your ankle is hurting b/c you're going too fast in getting into running. Running is pretty demanding for your joints and tendons, so you have to ease yourself into it. Maybe ride a bike or walk or use an elliptical trainer or swim instead. Something low impact. When you get feeling better again, a good way to increase your speed is to throw some intervals in your run, where you run fast for a couple minutes and then slow down or walk until you are ready to go again. Happy running!

Looked at my calendar today…I had written 16 mile run. I was happy today to be able to run 2 miles. Nothing like starting over, but really, I was very happy to run again! It felt so good! :vebo: I’m still feeling the slightest pinch so I’m really going to ease back into this.
Go Hamsters!!

I rode 15 miles today. Then my bike broke down. I hauled it to the shop. It had two broken spokes. YTD = 1707 miles.

Question...how do you guys KNOW how many miles you have run?
I mean, I'd like to start running and monitor how far I've gone...but I have no idea...

At the park I go to there are like these markers on the ground that say how far you've jogged... At my old apartment there was a street that went in a big cirlce, and I just drove my car around it and measured it with the car distance milage thingy... I think that should be fairly accurate? Maybe you can do that?
For me today: 5 1/2 hours of jiu-jitsu practice...

10 minutes elliptical (my legs were killing me for some reason), 25 minutes treadmill, 40 minutes resistance training. I also cleaned the litter boxes and swabbed the "litter room." That has to count for something!!
Does anyone know if it makes a difference in which order I work out muscle groups? I try to do the machines in a different order every time, alternating arms and legs (so i don't get too tired on one or the other), and starting on the machines I have the most trouble getting through 30 reps on first, to ones I find easier last. But is it more beneficial to go in any particular order?

Linzey - I run on a path that spans ~60 miles across the state, and there are mile markers for each mile :)
rabid_child, I don't know about the physical aspect, but I find that it's mentally easier for me to do harder machines first and easier ones last :)
16 mile bike ride and about an hour walking w/dogs today.

Thanks for the info guys :) Where I live there are no parks nearby with posts or anything like that. But I've developed a 'routine'...a running plan. Going about medium speed running, not flat out sprinting but still pretty fast, it takes me 25 minutes to complete 'a course' (there and back to our condo). So I'd like to do one course every day, and then toning exercises).
I'm also working on eating better. I don't need to lose weight (93 lbs, 5 ft 3 - up 10 lbs from last year), but I DO need to get in shape. I'm deceptively thin...the type of body that LOOKS thin but to me at keast, feels all pudgy and gross. I think I need to tone up. Yuck.
