Alright, I'm doing a 35 mile bike ride on Sept. 12th. It's part of the NYC Century Ride.

so, I've been riding 20 miles at a time, lately. I need to get some padde shorts, that's fer sure. My butt was achey the other day. I think I'm doing very well, though. For not ever having ridden that far before.

I know I'll be able to do the 35 miles, no problem. That's really nothing, compared to these people who ride 300 miles or more per week.

Yay Hamsters!

That ride sounds pretty neat jw - is it actually in the city?

Yesterday:
30 min eliptical/45 min treadmill, short bike ride, rowing machine 15 mins
Today:
30 mins elip/treadmill, walking back/forth to work, walking with the kiddos pushing the big ass stroller (whew)

7 mile run and upper body weights today. (as usual!) ... and 8.5 mile bike ride. Wasn't expecting to do that but I did.

ETA:

Jes - There are two (probably more, actually  ) ways to go about increasing mielage...daily or weekly. Doing it daily would involve adding a little bit extra every day and weekly would be adding one or two runs with an extra mile or so added on until you reach your goal amount. Generally, you shouldn't increase mileage by more than 10% per week. So if you're running 4 miles, five days a week (20 miles per week) you could add up to 2 extra miles that week (.10 x 20 = 2) either by tacking an extra mile onto two runs, two miles on to one run, a little less than .5 mile on to every run, .5 miles on to four runs, etc. It all depends on how you approach it. If that was confusing let me know, I'll try to re-explain, I'm not always very good at organizing my thoughts :) And I'm sure others will give you ideas, too.

WfuDeac - My pace depends on the day. Every day I run at a different pace: basic schedule is like this: Monday: fast; Tuesday: slower recovery run; Wednesday: speedwork; Thursday: recovery run; Friday: fartlek (a few min. each slow, medium, fast repeated several times); Saturday: race or hard run. Keep in mind that I'm on a team so this is kind of set for me :D
To answer the question completely: On fast/hard days, I usually run about 8 - 8.5 minutes per mile. On recovery days it can vary between 9-10 minutes, depending on the soreness factor from the day before :) My 5k race at this point in time is about 24 or 25 minutes. I used to be a lot faster (20-21 minutes for 5k, with 8 minute miles on recovery days) but running's already worn me down with asthma and foot/ankle problems. But I do what I can and that's what matters :) I wish you lots of luck and enjoyment with your training and race! It's hard but worth it

NDvegan85 - I noticed in the end of last week's thread, you mentioned the cold in the mountains. FYI, although the mountains are cold and snowy in the winter, the cities near, but lower than the mountains, like Denver and SLC, are usually not that cold (except for the occassional snowstorm or cold snap). There are many days when the mountains are getting a lot of snow while Denver is sunny and in the 40s or 50s (which feels very comfortable in the dry air). (Don't tell anyone, though. ;) )

My lips are sealed! :sealed:

I rollerbladed for 40 min and did 45 min of Pilates and 20 min of yoga today.

jes- Welcome! :hi: Running is one of my favorite things ever! I would say that the best way to increase your runs is slowly. 10% a week maximum. Otherwise, you risk hurting yourself. Listen to your body and if you start feeling pain other than regular soreness, back of for awhile until you feel better. Good luck!

jwnyc- Good luck with the biking! Those gel seat covers do wonders for my butt.

anna- You've been running quite a bit lately! Great job!

treadmill - 2.25 mi, 3.5/4 mph w/ speed intervals - 35:54 min

I took it easy today. Lovely monthly fatigue and a pounding headache  , and a little sore from yesterday's TaeBo.

.. and i plod on.

25 minutes elliptical, about 35 minutes resistance training. Walked into the little knobie thing that adjusts the seat on the leg press.. AGAIN. The bruise from the last time was just mostly faded, and I walk into it again, but 1/2 inch up this time. *doh*

AnnaBanana... Do you do the weights before you run, or after? I'm still trying to figure out a schedule for me, because I want to try running (consistently) too.

1 1/2 of jiu-jitsu today... I was dying. I skipped two practices and had congestion from being sick earlier last week. I couldn't breath right.

Wow, Mskedi! You're on the celebrity training plan. (Well, that's what I tell myself when seeing a hard body celebrity, and realizing I'll probably never look like that.)

AnnaBanana... Do you do the weights before you run, or after? I'm still trying to figure out a schedule for me, because I want to try running (consistently) too.

I lift weights after I run. I've read that doing weights after cardio activity is best because your muscle's won't be 'fresh' and prone to over-working. So if you lift before you run, you might tire out your muscles and feel fatigued during your run ... if that makes sense. Like, you might do heavier weight than your muscles can take because it feels all right at first if you come in with un-fatigued muscles. I do find that if I lift before running my legs feel heavy. I feel like I'm not explaining this very well, please let me know if I should re-word or keep giving details or something

You might want to check out this article (http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,5033,s6-78-0-0-576-1-1X3X13X21-5,00.html) for some general info on weight training for runners :)

As for me, I had speedwork today but did a total of 7 miles including warmup/cooldown and did weights, too. :sunny:

Oh. I've read the opposite - that you are too fatigued after cardio to do weights properly. I usually do it before. I'm usually wiped out afterwards (if it was a good workout), so I know I won't feel like doing weights.

Did my 25 minute bike ride today. Thinking of taking another one after the man comes home. Do some exploring around here sans kiddos.

I just have a quick question. It's kind of gross and detailed, so if you have a weak stomach, leave now! Whenever I used to go for a run (1/2-1 mile), I would get like a thick, slimy mucous or spit in the back of my throat. I've never been a runner, but I was just trying to get in shape. I don't run anymore for different reasons, but will occasionally go rollerblading down my road (almost 3 miles) and the same thing happens. It sort of feels like a lugee (sp?) that doesn't want to come up, but I am able to get some of it out. Is this just because I'm out of shape and will subside if I consistantly workout, or is this like subtle asthma? This might be a very stupid question...but I don't know the answer.

Ohh okay, yeah that made perfect sense... Thanks!

I'm about to go to the gym (accross the street from my apt.), and work on back, triceps, and abs.

Go Hamsters! :hamster:

Tonight's plan: recover from how sore I am. :D Also, 1 hour tap, 30 minutes lower body weights. I can't stay for all my dance classes tonight because my bf's band is playing in Hollywood and I want to go. Yay! :)

As far as whether to lift weights before or after a workout, I've heard both. My trainer (for those two days I had one... hehe) said that if you're trying to lose weight it's better to do the weights first so that 1) the form is correct and 2) the cardio you do afterwards helps you lose weight because you used up your available energy on the weights. The PT I had before that said that I should do weights after cardio so that I wouldn't overwork my muscles. I've decided to just go with my mood...

In general, I do upper body weights before my cardio and lower body weights after my cardio (for the same reason that someone already mentioned -- if I do lower body weights before running/walking/bicycling/elliptical machine, it makes my legs feel heavy.

So I am not exactly being helpful at all here. :)

Go hamsters!!! :hamster:

monkey086, I usually get some extra phlegm when I do cardio, especially if it's particularly vigorous. Of course, my sinuses are reacting to the ragweed a bit lately. I'm not sure what causes it, or if it's a problem, though.

Add on another 1 1/2 miles running today between running in the rain to the bookstore, and running to and from the gym. And also 45 min. Pilates.

Oh, as far as weights, I find it best for me to split them up. I prefer to run or do whatever cardio in the morning and then do weights in late afternoon/evening. I like cardio in the morning to wake me up. But if I have to do them together, I definitely do the cardio first b/c if I lift first, I feel like crap and then I won't run as far or as fast. But that's just me.

Hi Hamsters,
Crunches, squats, lunges, and various other little exercises I do for running. I’ve been wanting to bike but it’s been rainy. Tomorrow I’m taking the kids to a big waterpark, lots of climbing up water slides. :sunny:

Welcome to the Hamsters Jes! :hamster: I agree with what the others said…increase slowly…this is very important! The 10 % rule is a good one.

monkey086, I have a similar problem and it’s very annoying. My problem stems from my sinuses draining *gross*. I always chew a very minty gum when I run and am forever clearing my throat. It’s amazing that people will still run with me.

With regards to weights, I usually do some before and some after, but it all depends on how I’m feeling.

Go Hamsters!!! :hamster: :hamster:

Today was tennis (doubles) for about 2.5 hours.
Glad I'm not the only one constantly clearing my throat during exercise! It gets really annoying after a while.
