IBS generally has certain "trigger" foods that bother you--which is why ayurveda seems to help many with IBS. my sister also has IBS. since she's been dairy free and on a basicly ayurvedic diet, she has predominently symptom free. stress (both positive and negative) in the extreme can also cause flare ups for her, but she's often able to handle that.
it may help to discover which foods are "triggers" and which stresses are triggers and find appropriate ways to manage them. my mother also has spastic colon (along with IBS)--so she's had to find ways too.
i'm lucky, while i have a sensitive stomach sometimes, i'm not as extreme as my sister or mother. but, i do basicly know what it's like to have IBS and to have to be careful. :)

I'm pretty familiar with my trigger foods. I stopped eating dairy 6 mos ago to see if that was one of them. Its not improved without dairy, so i'm gonna go with no on that one. Since then I have eaten cookies made with butter on a few occasions with no ill effects. I know my triggers are caffeine, onions, fried foods, high concentrations of fat (milkfat notwithstanding), also large quantities of anything. If I ever let myself get REALLY full, I know I'll be sick the next day. OH also acidy things, and spicey/heavily seasoned things. Like orange juice or curries.

Rabid, I didn't have it calculated that you were burning 1200-1500 cals/day exercising-I meant 1200-1500 cals/week. :D Anyway, I am sorry you are having so many problems. I hope you can find a better doctor or that you can find the help that you need somewhere, or at least the peace of mind. I have a creeping hunch your weight is probably just fine.

yeah, that pretty much alligns with ayurvedic stuff for kaphas.
these sorts of "elements" aggrivate kaphas:
sweet--sugar, milk, butter, rice, breads pasta
sour--yogurt, lemon, cheese
salty--salt
heavy--wheat, red meats, cheese
oily--milk, soy beans, coconut
cold--mint, sugar, milk
these sorts of things balance kaphas:
pungent--spices such as ginger and cumin
bitter--green leafy veggies, tumeric
astringent--beans, lentils, pomegranites
light--barley
dry--honey, lentils, cabbage
hot--pepper, honey, eggs
Essentially, you want foods that stimulate you and lead to fullness without lethargy. But, because we must be mindful that certain spicy foods (typically onions and the like--foods that are rajasic, or excessively spicy or hot, onions are a part of this group, as is garlic. it's also better for you to have hot/warm/cooked foods over cold foods with raw fruits and salads.
the best sorts of grains for kaphas tend to be barley, millet, buckwheat, and rye. rice and wheat can have a negative affect (this includes wheat gluten, a common ingredient in processed vegetarian foods).
avoid dairy of course.
take in lighter fruits such as apples, pears, pomegranates, cranberries, and persimmons. dried fruits are ok, such as figs, prunes, and raisins. astringent veggies are a good way to go--aparagus, baby salad greens, etc, beets, brocoli, peas, potatoes, carrots cauliflower, broccolie, pumpkin and sprouts.
Reduce nuts in favor of seeds, particularly pumpkin seeds.
use only small amounts of light oils, such as olive oil, hemp oil, almond oil. But generally, reduce oils.
avoid sweets and sweetners.
all beans are good, but tofu and kidney beans aren't great.
spices are good for kaphas because they stimulate easy digestion AND they decrease hunger (which means less chance of over-eating). Ginger is particularly good for people with digestive issues.
Remember, these are ideas and suggestions. you're going to have to figure out what works best for you--with experimentation. There's a lot to learn and understand about ayurvedic diets, but also about how these things apply to you. give yourself time and work in trends.
i wish you all the best!

I know for a fact lentils make me very ill. I digest breads and pastas and wheat products quite well, and both mint and ginger settle my stomach. I digest nuts much better than seeds. I eat a lot of tofu and kidney beans, and they don't even give me gas! I do agree that I do better with cooked than raw food. Raw fruits I'm fine with, but salads and raw veggies make my stomach feel like its full of rocks. I think I need a megan category of ayurvedic diet.

RC I was going to suggest eating a little more but can see that this really isn't an option for you :(
All I can really say is stick with it, because these things will improve over time and the weight will come off. Also make sure you are getting a bit of variety in the exercise that you doing as the body does get used to one thing or another and mixing it up can really help.
It will come right eventually, your diet sounds great and the amount of exercise should start to show some benefits soon. Also lets not forget the long term benefits of exercise which will have lifelong dividends if you stick with it.

I just had the most delicious dinner :) Rotini with fresh garden tomato and zucchini -- and peas. I was starving after work tonight, but it took 12 hrs post workout for my body to go "hey! replace some calories!" (then it took about 15 minutes post-pasta to go "hey! I remember some almond cookies you made upstairs!")
Insofar as switching up my workout... i've finally made it to 30 minutes on the elliptical machine more than just as a high energy day fluke! I started out not able to get to 5 minutes. (That was in June.) So I do those 30 and 30 of resistance training. I could switch up the cardio to say, the treadmill, but it isn't nearly as efficient at burning calories, so is it really worth the switch? I do do the resistance training machines in a different order every day. Does that count?
Today I went FIVE MINUTES over an hour at the gym and got a $20 parking ticket. *d'oh* You see this? Exercise is Punishment! Not reward! Really though, I'm at a point now where I feel guilty if I don't go. Not that I want to feel guilty, but it makes me go, so I guess thats good.
Thanks for the help :)

i hope you saved some of that dinner (and cookies... wait.. screw the dinner... i want the cookies) for me.... :) I'm starving w/ no food! :)
I'm glad your exercise regime is actually showing improvements (if not on the weight on your endurance). Last time I got on an "exercise kick" it felt like i was putting so much effort into it and not seeing any results (not even the ability to sustain longer/harder workout sessions).

here's the thing, while it may be something that you can handle now (and you may need to do a sort of candida-intestinal cleanse type thing, i don't know!), it's something that in the long run may not work best for you. Also, certain foods seem to "give in to" the kapha ways (which on the negative side tend toward lethargy and easy weight gain), and wheat is one of those things. you can buy non-wheat pastas, which are great, and move into more "gentle" grains than wheat (it's a tough one), and then you'll be supporting your constitution better.
again, it's still an experiment--and there are always transitions. Also, i often blanche my sister's salad veggies and use a nice ginger and oil dressing that i make to make salads more digestable (it's basicly like a quick wilt in a hot skillet). she can handle them a little broken down rather than straight--but once the intestines, etc, are cleared she does pretty well.
i wish you all the best.

I guess that I mean sticking with your current plan for the most part but maybe once a week switching a session on the eliptical (or some other resistance machine) with an activity you don't regularly do e.g. running, swimming, cycling, rowing [it probably doesn't matter too much what the activity so long as it is giving you a workout]. It will probably hurt a bit more than the activities you regularly do but that is part of the fun.
BTW thanks for the REM lyrics, you have got me listening to some of the older albums that I haven't listened to in years!

I don't know if I want to hurt more than I already do!! :-/ I'm sore all the time!!
As for the REM lyrics.. did you have to look them up or did you know it was REM? I have a little REM obsession problem. :D

Just don't forget the old addage ... no pain no gain :) But if it is really hurting then you may be due a rest!
As for the REM lyrics I almost recognise them, I wouldn't have been able to tell which song without looking them up but would probably have guessed at REM. I understand the REM obsession, I went through that a few years back.

If you aren't losing weight, but are working out perhaps you are taking in too many calories? Because you will add muscle to your fat if you don't burn a little more than you eat. I know whenever I work out, I initially gain a little, then I lose it rather quickly. I go about 4 times a week for 2 hours a piece. I dunno...maybe this is a plateau you're at and need to add a little more excercise? It sounds like you're doing enough though. I don't know lol. :D

I realize this thread has gotten a bit long, but I'm only taking in about 1500 calories a day eating at my "normal pace." That is, eating when I'm hungry until I'm full. I don't feel comfortable restricting it considering how many I'm eating to begin with. I also don't really have much food to restrict, since I don't do stuff like drink soda or eat donuts, y'know?

The reason I don't burn a lot of fat when I excersize is because I am able to excercise and excercize and excersize and keep excersizing and I NEVER get tired for some reason, and if I don't get tired, I don't burn any calories. At least that's what it feels like. I dunno lol. You're doing great! :D I also feel guilty whenever I don't go to the gym too. hehe. :vebo:
EDIT: If you look above, I spelled the word "excersize" THREE different ways! HAHA. :surprised

tiredness and calorie burning are not really related.
another thing to look into:
aloe (to drink/ingest) and poi (hawaian herb from taro prepped in certain ways)
i'm trying poi pretty soon. :) (when it gets here).

hey...muscle really doesn't burn fat..it helps to increase your metabolism and burn the calories you eat..if your lookin to lose some weight, then you hafta do aerobic/cardio like 3 times a week and some weight training..that way you can burn off the extra calories while building muscle..this is the only way you can lose the weight and get toned..and as for being sore all of the time...that isn't really a good thing...i was sore from tryin to run 10 miles a day accordin to my cross country schedule, but that didn't really help...sure i got toned and lost some weight...but it took a while for my muscles to recover, so find time for your body to relax or your just gonna end up wearin away your muscles, which is not what you want...and do seek a dietician for advice if this really is a big issue..well take carez!
