I can't believe we haven't had a thread for this yet!
What are some of your favorite song lyrics? Are there any songs that make you laugh out loud or think profound thoughts when you listen to them?
One of my favorite songs is "I'm a Terrible Person", by Rooney. I sing along with it (badly) all the time, and I find the lyrics so amusing. Robbie is such a bad boy. Maybe he took lessons from Tame? :tame:
I'm a terrible person (x3)
'Cause I've made up my mind
I'm a terrible person
'Cause I've led her on
And I'm the only one who knows
What I've done to her
Oh yeah, I'm much smarter now
I won't tell her friends before her
Oh, I'm afraid
It's gonna be a bad day come Sunday (x4)
I'm a horrible person
I read her diary
I'm not to be trusted
I told all of her secrets
To all the guys in town
They all laugh and slap me five, oh yeah
Luckily she doesn't have dirt on me
'Cause I'm the cleanest guy
Oh, I'm so afraid
It's gonna be a bad day come Sunday (x4)
Well, I don't think I'll ever be sorry
No, I'm not sorry for a thing I've done
And I don't think I'll ever wake up lonely
'Cause having her around wasn't all that special
I don't think I'll ever be sorry
No, I'm not sorry for a thing I've done
And I don't think I'll ever wake up lonely
'Cause having her around wasn't all that special
It's gonna be a bad day come Sunday (x4)

This is probably the song that evokes the most emotion in me, so in that regard I think it's one of my favorites...
Tara Maclean - In The Wings
There's a frost in the air
Summer doesn't want to play
They've taken down the fair
And the leaves have all blown away
They say everything must die
For a new life to begin
In the seasons of our love
I feel the winter setting in
Through this bitter, bitter cold
I thought I'd always have you to hold me
Through the storm and keep me warm
Through this bitter, bitter cold
The sun has kissed your face
Your tears in my hair
You say it's time to go my friend
You feel it in the air
And like the moon upon the water
Gives diamonds to the sea
I pray that when the snow is gone
You'll return to me
Through this bitter, bitter cold
I thought I'd always have you to hold me
Through the storm and keep me warm
Through this bitter, bitter cold
And if there is such a thing
As winter in the spring
Then I'll make angels
And I'll see you in the wings
Of this bitter, bitter cold...

I have a favorite verse from
The Flaming Lips
"Do You Realize?"
Do you realize?
That everyone you know someday will die.
And instead of saying all of your goodbyes,
Let them know you realize that life moves fast.
It's hard to make the good things last.
You realize the sun don't go down,
It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning 'round.
Do you realize?

some of my favorite verses from Ani songs
VIRTUE
the one person who really knows me best
says i'm like a cat
yeah the kind of cat that you just can't pick up
and throw into your lap
no, the kind that doesn't mind being held
only when its her idea
yeah, the kind that feels what she decides to feel
when she is good and ready to feel it
and now i am prowling through the backyard
and i am hiding under the car
i have gotten out of everything
i've gotten into so far
i eat when I am hungry
and i travel alone
and just outside the glow of the house
is where i feel most at home
SLIDE
she laid down in her party dress and never got up
needless to say she missed the party
she just got sad
then she got stuck
she was wincing like something brittle
trying hard to bend
she was numb with the terror
of losing her best friend
but she never sees things changing
she only sees them ending
and some vicious whispering voice
keeps saying you have no choice
SWANDIVE
i'm cradling the hardest, heaviest part of me in my hand
the ship is pitching and heaving, my limbs are bobbing and weaving
and i think this is something i understand
i just need a couple vaccinations for my far-away vacation
i'm going to go ahead and go boldly because a little bird told me
that jumping is easy, that falling is fun
up until you hit the sidewalk, shivering and stunned
and they can call me crazy if i fail
all the chance that i need
is one-in-a-million
and they can call me brilliant
if i succeed
gravity is nothing to me
moving at the speed of sound
i'm just gonna get my feet wet
until i drown...
PICK YER NOSE
i think shy is boring
i think depressed is too
i think pretty is nice
but i'd rather see something new
all these plastic people
got their plastic surgery
but we got a big big beautiful
we got it for free
who you gonna be
if you can't be yourself
you can't get it from t.v.
you can't force it on
anybody else
EVOLVE
and there's this moth outside my kitchen door
she's bonkers for that bare bulb
flying round in circles
bashing in her exoskull
and out in the woods she navigates fine by the moon
but get her around a light bulb and she's doomed
she is trying to evolve
she's just trying to evolve
I could post more but then I might look a little crazy :p

One of my favorite songs as of late:
Antimatter, Angelic
Angel cried last night; it was something in her dreams,
Carving pictures on her bedroom wall, she wonders what it means,
But gets by inside by saying it's not real,
There's no reason to confuse myself no matter what it seems.
Angel lied last night to amputate her fears,
With no question she exhumes herself from possibilities.
Close your eyes it's fine by saying it's not real,
There's no reason to forgive myself no matter what it seems.
And if I could grow some wings I'd fly away home...

I like anything by Sting as far as lyrics go. Fields of Gold and Set Them Free are my favorites. I'm sure there are others that I'll think of but he's the first that comes to mind.

Ani has some of the best lyrics out there, IMO.
I like this from her (also from EVOLVE)
so i walk like i'm on a mission
cuz that's the way i groove
i got more and more to do
i got less and less to prove
it took me too long to realize
that i don't take good pictures
cuz i have the kind of beauty
that moves
And this from Not a Pretty Girl
and generally my generation
wouldn't be caught dead working for the man
and generally i agree with them
trouble is you gotta have yourself an alternate plan
and i have earned my disillusionment
i have been working all of my life
and i am a patriot
i have been fighting the good fight
But I do love Fiona Apple's Slow Like Honey...
and most of her songs, actually. But her lyrics on her debut album surpass those on her 2nd, IMO.

Blasphemous Rumours by Depeche Mode
Girl of sixteen, whole life ahead of her
Slashed her wrists, bored with life
Didn’t succeed, thank the lord
For small mercies
Fighting back the tears, mother reads the note again
Sixteen candles burn in her mind
She takes the blame, it’s always the same
She goes down on her knees and prays
I don’t want to start any blasphemous rumours
But I think that god’s got a sick sense of humor
And when I die I expect to find him laughing
Girl of eighteen, fell in love with everything
Found new life in jesus christ
Hit by a car, ended up
On a life support machine
Summer’s day, as she passed away
Birds were singing in the summer sky
Then came the rain, and once again
A tear fell from her mother’s eye
I don’t want to start any blasphemous rumours
But I think that god’s got a sick sense of humor
And when I die I expect to find him laughing
How is it that they make such danceable music that sounds so effin' depressing?? Pfft.

I've been feeling a lot like this lately:
Three Days Grace - (I Hate) Everything About You"
Every time we lie awake
After every hit we take
Every feeling that I get
But I haven’t missed you yet
Every roommate kept awake
By every sigh and scream we make
All the feelings that I get
But I still don’t miss you yet
Only when I stop to think about it
I hate everything about you
Why do I love you
I hate everything about you
Why do I love you
Every time we lie awake
After every hit we take
Every feeling that I get
But I haven’t missed you yet
Only when I stop to think about it
I hate everything about you
Why do I love you
I hate everything about you
Why do I love you
Only when I stop to think
About you, I know
Only when you stop to think
About me, do you know
I hate everything about you
Why do I love you
You hate everything about me
Why do you love me
I hate
You hate
I hate
You love me
I hate everything about you
Why do I love you

Will I be the first loser to post ambiguous Bright Eyes lyrics in this thread? It appears as though I will be! Oh the joy! :sealed:
'The Difference in the Shades' By Bright Eyes
Now that its June, we'll sleep out in the garden
and if it rains, we'll just sink in to the mud
where it is quiet and much cooler than the house is
and there is no clocks or phones to wake us up
because i have learned that nothing is as pressing
as the one who is pressing would like you to believe
and i am content to walk a little slower
because there is nowhere that i really need to be
i find that life is easier when it is just a blur
with no details to confuse who or what or where i was
so when the ending comes the full regret will be obscure
but these are days we dream about when the sunlight paints us gold
and this apartment could not be prettier as when we danced up there alone
this TV is old, the color is ****ed, do you see the
difference in the shades?
but the green is still close to green, my love
and i believe we are the same
and we'll stay like this, all gold and green
the light collects and projects your heart on a movie screen
and if you close your eyes
we will always be the way we were that night
you crawled inside of me
and you slept in my blood the way you sleep now
the quietest hush has consumed this house
and when the doctors are gone and you sweat through the bed
with all these pictures and pills they piled around your head
just rest now, and in a moment you will know everything
was it just a dream?
it's too vague now to recount.
and outline of the one you loved in a life that was not longer will be
stands above you as you sleep.

This song means a lot to me. It is "our" song (me and my fiance), and we will dance to it at our wedding in the future
Green Eyes
by Coldplay
Honey you are a rock
Upon which I stand
And I come here to talk
I hope you understand
The green eyes
Yeah the spotlight
Shines upon you
And how could
Anybody
Deny you
I came here with a load
And it feels so much lighter
Now I met you
Honey you should know
That I could never go on
Without you
Green eyes
Honey you are the sea
Upon which I float
And I came here to talk
I think you should know
That green eyes
You're the one that I wanted to find
And anyone who tried to deny you,
Must be out of their mind
Because I came here with a load
And it feels so much lighter since I met you
And honey you should know,
That I could never go on
Without you
Green eyes, green eyes, ohohoh...
Honey you are a rock
Upon which I stand.

the lyrics from "Girl Anachronism" by the Dresden Dolls...i love them because sometimes they remind me of me... :x
you can tell
from the scars on my arms
and cracks in my hips
and the dents in my car
and the blisters on my lips
that i'm not the carefullest of girls
you can tell
from the glass on the floor
and the strings that're breaking
and i keep on breaking more
and it looks like i am shaking
but it's just the temperature
and then again
if it were any colder i could disengage
if i were any older i could act my age
but i dont think that youd believe me
it's not the way i'm meant to be
it's just the way the operation made me
and you can tell
from the state of my room
that they let me out too soon
and the pills that i ate
came a couple years too late
and ive got some issues to work through
there i go again
pretending to be you
make-believing
that i have a soul beneath the surface
trying to convince you
it was accidentally on purpose
i am not so serious
this passion is a plagiarism
i might join your century
but only on a rare occasion
i was taken out
before the labor pains set in and now
behold the world's worst accident
i am the girl anachronism
and you can tell
by the red in my eyes
and the bruises on my thighs
and the knots in my hair
and the bathtub full of flies
that i'm not right now at all
there i go again
pretending that i'll fall
don't call the doctors
cause they've seen it all before
they'll say just
let her crash and burn she'll learn
the attention just encourages her
and you can tell
from the full-body cast
that i'm sorry that i asked
though you did everything you could
(like any decent person would)
but i might be catching so don't touch
you'll start believeing youre immune to gravity and stuff
don't get me wet
because the bandages will all come off
and you can tell
from the smoke at the stake
that the current state is critical
well it is the little things, for instance:
in the time it takes to break it she can make up ten excuses:
please excuse her for the day, its just the way the medication makes her...
i dont necessarily believe there is a cure for this
so i might join your century but only as a doubtful guest
i was too precarious removed as a caesarian
behold the worlds worst accident
I AM THE GIRL ANACHRONISM
ps I heart bright eyes :-D

"Wanted" by The Refreshments
I'm wanted in 50 states and in Mexico.
Them wanted posters stretch from Alaska down to Tiera del Fuego
I do the don'ts, I don't the do's
I wrong the rights and I false the truths.
I drink all night and I howl them blues...
Cause I've never been wanted like I wanna be wanted by you.
Federales put a bullet in my sombrero
Still there ain't an hombre standing that's got the drop on this here pistilero
I do the don'ts, I don't the do's
And every time I turn around I'm on the 5 o'clock news.
My blood runs red but my heart is blue...
Cause I've never been wanted like I want to be wanted by you.

Mexicola - Queens of the Stone Age:
Setting sun deals hands of gold
There’s velvet eyes in Mexico
Just a fall away
And all she said was true
Speak in tongues, speak in lies
Drooling livers, born to die
It’s a wonder that those guns
Don’t point at you
Keep sayin, go on
Keep sayin, go on
Keep sayin, you won't live forever
Point and shoot
I know just what you mean
In a world that’s
Full of sh** and gasoline, baby
One dog’s dead one’s on the phone
Just leave a lung or leave it alone
It’s that same on song again
I hate it cause it’s true
Keep sayin, go on
Keep sayin, go on
Keep sayin, you won't live forever
You Think I Ain't Worth a Dollar, but I Feel Like a Millionaire - QOTSA:
Dead bull with a life from the low
I’ll be massive conquistador
Give me soul or show me the door
Metal heavy, soft at the core
Gimme toro, gimme some more
Pressurize, neutralize
Deep fried, gimme some more
Space flunky, four on the floor
Fortified with the liquor store
This one's down, gimme some more
Gimme toro, gimme some more
Shrunken head I love to adore
"B" movie, gimme some gore
Gimme toro, gimme some more
"B" movie, gimme some gore
Gimme toro, gimme some more
from Beulah Land - Tori Amos:
give me religion
and a lobotomy
from Blood Roses - Tori Amos:
I shaved every place where you been
from Little Amsterdam - Tori Amos:

hominy get it on the plate girl
OK, that's enough for now.

Songbird- Eva Cassidy
For you there'll be no crying
For you the sun will be shining
Cause I feel that when I'm with you
It's alright, I know it's right
And the songbirds keep singing
Like they know the score
And I love you, I love you, I love you
Like never before
To you, I would give the world
To you, I'd never be cold
Cause I feel that when I'm with you
It's alright, I know it's right
And the songbirds keep singing
Like they know the score
And I love you, I love you, I love you
Like never before
Like never before; like never before.

Precious Things: Tori Amos
So I ran faster
But it caught me here
Yes my loyalties turned
Like my ankle
In the seventh grade
Running after Billy
Running after the rain
These precious things
Let them bleed
Let them wash away
These precious things
Let them break their hold over me
He said you're really an ugly girl
But I like the way you play
And I died
But I thanked him
Can you believe that
Sick Sick
Holding on to his picture
Dressing up every day
I wanna smash the faces
Of those beautiful boys
Those christian boys
So you can make me cum
that doesn't make you Jesus
These precious things
Let them bleed
Let them wash away
These precious things
Let them break their hold over me

You've all picked lovely music! Tori Amos, Coldplay, Sting, Eva Cassidy, good stuff.
Some of my favourite lyrics are in the song "You Were Here" by Sarah Harmer.
are there no blinders on lights that blare
white noise on the eyes?
from gas station lots
and reflected ice glares
so that i can walk home
by moonlight alone
can we go up to where the wind howls
and stand alee against the trees?
they've grown up so tall that you can't see the house
it's a fortress now
but you know how it used to be
i could lie to myself
and say i like it
but i would love it if you were here
these words on paper smell like you
associated and random thought
on my lips words turn blue
evanescent feeling lost
i could lie to myself
and say i like it
but i would love it if you were here
i'm just sad for myself
because i know you're clear
but i would love it if you were here
i can just see you, show me your gardens
i thought you'd grow roses and grapes on low vines
i wanted to know you when we were both older
i thought there'd be more of those wonderful times
i could lie to myself
and say i like it
but i would love it if you were here
i'm just sad for myself
because i know you're clear
but i would love it if you were here
you were here
yes you were
yes you were

yeah im gonna be lame and post lame lyrics. watch me. all the bolded lyrics have been used in my signature/title before.
Scream of The Butterfly by Acid Bath
A creature made of sunshine
her eyes were like the sky
Rabbit howls like something old
As we twitch to a lullaby
The scapel shines in god's sunshine
The Streetlights whisper pain
Down here near the poison stream
our god has gone insane
She smiles like a child with flowers in her hair
with blood on her hands
into the sun she stares
She feels it die
I heard her cry
She smiles like a child with flowers in her hair
with blood on her hands
into the sun she stares
She feels it die
I heard her cry...
like the scream of the butterfly
Sunshine in the house of flames
she loves it where she gets it
but it's never felt the same
surgery, in the house of dissection
when your candle burns out..I'll resurrect you
she runs
through fields of daisies
yeah, it's just a shame that they eat their own babies
Who cares
cos the air is free
when you get there will you kiss the dead for me?
there's blood on the moon and the summer is cold
there's love in the room
but baby that's getting old
there's blood on my face sittin' on uhh dead shore
A highway, highway of emptiness and I'm getting bored
There's blood on the moon as we plan our escape
The goddess in bloom
handcuffed and raped
There's blood in the bathtub baby
murder the king
there's blood on the moon
there's blood on just about everything
Sunshine in the house of flames
she loves it where she gets it
but it's never felt the same
surgery, in the house of dissection
when your candle burns out..I'll resurrect you
she runs
through fields of daisies
yeah, it's just a shame that they eat their own babies
Who cares
cos the air is free
when you get there will you kiss the dead for me?
Something cold is forced inside her
a tears spill down her cheek
stillborn songs of a dead dreamer
hymn's of a needle freak
With sunlight in her hair she smiles like she don't care
her dreams of liquid blue
I cut my self again and again to remind myslef of you
She smiles like a child with flowers in her hair
with blood on her hands
into the sun she stares
She feels it die
I heard her cry...
She smiles like a child with flowers in her hair
with blood on her hands
into the sun she stares
She feels it die
I heard her cry...
like the scream of the butterfly
like the scream of the butterfly
I met an angel with a sawed-off shotgun
wanted by the FBI
we dropped some acid
killed our parents
then we hit the road
like the scream of the butterfly
believe it or not, its not a metal song either.
im lame.

"Your Flag Decal" by John Prine (don't you just love folk?)
Well while digesting Reader's Digest
In the back of a dirty book store,
A flag decal, with gum on the back,
Fell out on the floor.
So I picked it up and I ran outside
And I slapped on my windowshield,
And if I could see old Betsy Ross now
I tell her how good I feel.
Chorus
Oh but your flag decal won't get you
Into Heaven any more.
They're already overcrowded
From your dirty little wars.
Now Jesus he don't like killin'
No matter what the reason is for,
And your flag decal won't get you
Into Heaven any more.
(Well) I went into the bank this morning
and the teller she said to me,
"If you join our Chrismas club
we'll give you ten of those flags for free."
So I didn't mess around a bit
and I took her up on what she said.
And I stuck those stickers
all over my car And one on my wife's forehead.
Chorus
(Well) I got my car so stickered up
That I couldn't see.
Then I ran it right upside a curb
And then right into a tree.
By the time they called a doctor down
I was already dead.
And I'll never understand why the man
Standing at the Pearly Gates said...
Chorus

This song has been inhabiting my mind for a good 3 weeks now, so I think it counts for this.
More than This- Roxy Music
I could feel at the time
There was no way of knowing
Fallen leaves in the night
Who can say where they´re blowing
As free as the wind
And hopefully learning
Why the sea on the tide
Has no way of turning
More than this - there is nothing
More than this - tell me one thing
More than this - there is nothing
It was fun for a while
There was no way of knowing
Like a dream in the night
Who can say where we´re going
No care in the world
Maybe i´m learning
Why the sea on the tide
Has no way of turning
More than this - there is nothing
More than this - tell me one thing
More than this - there is nothing
I loved that they used this tune in the karaoke scene in Lost in Translation :D

this is one of my favorites because its the only song ive ever heard with my name in it. go figure.
Princess Jasmine of Tinseltown-The Nerve Agents
There was no false perspective here
She was so very sad and sickened
In the name of art she was to be here
Dying like all of the others?
Nauseated, Jasmine stood her ground
While all of the Tinsel people,
Soulless and evil, worked the town
Tinseltown damned
Said she was a princess now in need of conversation
She wanted more from those, that never gave jubilation,
When rubbed so slightly
Now here we go, back below...
Into this metropolitan hell hole
It is not the talent that let's you live...
It is the ugliest of things
