View Full Version : Are Clif Bars Still Vegan?

I was in the store yesterday, and I noticed that Clif Bars have new packaging. Naturally, I checked the ingredients list to see if anything had been changed, and it seems something has been!
Before, they claimed that they "sourced ingredients that do not use eggs or dairy". However, now, the ingredients list states "Contains soy, peanuts, and seeds. May contain traces of dairy or other nuts."
Has anyone else noticed this? Apparently, Clif Bars "may contain traces of dairy...".
Also, I was wondering if I could get the general opinion of people on the "may contain traces of dairy" warning that is on so many product packaging lately.

I was always aware that their products may contain traces of dairy due to being produced on the same equipment (or some of the ingredients in them) as dairy products. They have always listed their product as Kosher Dairy in regards to that possibility. I still have one occasionally as I tend to think the possiblity of contaimination is low, although that may just be wishful thinking on my part.

I eat them. I don't have a problem with "may contain traces" stuff.

^ same here. The warning is mostly for allergies.

Eh, I wouldn't. I have a hard enough time trusting things that come in wrappers as it is. :stinkeye:
Odwalla bars (http://www.odwalla.com/obar2/obar2.html) are better anyhow.

i will still eat them, its no different than sharing cooking pots with my omni family, and it only matters if you're sensitive to milk on a parts per million level.

Perhaps not even a parts per million level. These warnings are primarily about covering their asses in a legal sense. If someone decides to sue the maker because of an allergic reaction that may or may not have been from the cliff bar, they can say, "look, we put a warning on this."

I would like to try those. For some reason, I thought they contained honey. I looked over some of the ingredient lists on their site and I saw no sign of honey. These look to be vegan, do they source all of the vitamins from vegan sources?

I love clif bars! I eat a Clif Bar/Odwalla Bar/Luna Bar almost every day! Where's the "Absolutely yes, there's no doubt about it!" option?
Hey FR, Odwalla is owned by Coca-cola! :D

I'm probably the only person here who is not that fond of cliff bars. Lara bars are not bad but cliff bars are way oversweet for me.

FR, I can only tell you about the factory that I am familiar with, but perhaps this may help you feel better.
When I was in university, my then husband worked at Pepsi, cleaning their factory. I spent some time there and got to see first hand the procedures and products used to clean the pipes. Before switching to a new product (ie going from Pepsi to 7 Up), they would hose the inside out with a bleach-style product and then with a neutralizer/soapy product. Then water. Then they did a run to make sure that the pop wasn't containing any cleaning products or Pepsi. THEN they started running the 7UP.
I suspect other factories have similar cleaning practices. I can't see dairy, or anything else, surviving that wash down.

unless you have allergies, i think that would be a silly reason not to eat something.

Exactly. End of "controversy." I think part of this is that their newer Mojo bars have dairy or something in them.

I'm not currently vegan, but if I was then I don't think I would have a problem with it.
