Thanks alot for adding Scandinavia, Michael!
Not sure what topics would be fun to discuss, but I suppose "Which country (or which city) in Scandinavia is the most veg-friendly" would be a fine starter. Although Norwegian myself, I would vote for Sweden in this regard. Only been there a couple of times, and never in any of the big cities, but each time I was amazed that they had so much veggie stuff there. Even when I went to a rock concert (in the mddle of nowhere) last sumer, they served veggie food there. Good food too, I might add.
Denmark is okay too, I guess, but I haven't been around so much. Was in the Copenhagen area three summers ago, and had some great meals at "Morgenstedet" in Christiania.
As for Norway... You don't want to go outside of the big cities, unless you are prepared to cook for yourself, or you've made some special arrangements. Oslo has two vegetarian restaurants and two veg cafes. The restaurants are somewhat expensive, and the vegan options are sparse. My favourite used to be the cafe at Hjelms gate.
But this is merely an opinion based on my rather limited travelling experiences. So feel free to post your own opinion, or post about any other topic related to Scandinavia!
Thanks for the Scandinavian thread, Michael! :vebo:
I haven't been to Norway or Sweden while being a vegetarian, so I can't really say much about my experiences there.
I live in Århus, Denmark and I have trouble finding restaurants and cafés that serve veggie meals. There are a few, but then it's almost only one dish and that's not much to choose from. :(
I've found that cafés and restaurants that use mainly organic products often have veggie dishes on their menu.
Copenhagen is indeed quite good when it comes to vegetarian food.

Hey, it's up. Thanks from me as well, Michael.
I lived in Trondheim, Norway in 1985-86. I wasn't vegetarian at the time though. I don't remember any veggie-type restaurants/cafes, but I'm sure there's something now. It seemed like a fairly liberal city to me. Indian Summer, are you from Oslo?
Reda, I've always wanted to visit Denmark. :)
Hello to both of you. :hi:

Hi, spidermonkey! No, I'm not from Oslo, but I used to live there during my studies.
Trondheim is a really nice city, especially for students. It can be pretty cold and nasty up there in the winter, though. I'm not aware of any all-veg restaurants or cafes, but many restaurants have at least some veggie options.
I live in a city just a few hours drive south of Trondheim, called Kristiansund.

Oh, very cool. That's one place that I didn't get to visit…looks beautiful though. The closest place that I visited (well, maybe it's not closer) was Oppdal, where I ended up having a major skiing accident. I landed on a rock...long story. Anyways, I can’t wait to return to Norge one day. I would love to do some hiking/climbing in the mountains there.
Spidermonkey, you're very welcome! :hi: It's much like Sweden and Norway, except it's FLAT! :D

That's okay if it's flat, I need balance. :D Denmark looks like a beautiful country. I hoping to take my mom on a mother-daughter trip to Scandinavia once I finish my residency. My mom has never been to Norway, even though her parents are Norwegian. It has been her lifelong dream to go.

:D I think my mom would disown me.
I'm in Finland and I agree that Sweden/Stockholm is very veg friendly indeed. Helsinki is getting there too :) Two new veg restaurants just opened a few months ago. I haven't been to Norway/Iceland and when I went to Denmark I wasn't veg yet so can't say about those.
btw, would it be possible to change the title to ScandInavia instead of ScandAnavia? :p

Hi, pyrsk! I was quite recently in Helsinki, actually! Really a nice city and nice weather, too :) Visited several veg restaurants. (Zucchini, Vege, Silvoplee - Silvoplee was my fav!)
Oh, we must be some dyslectics not noticing that crazy spelling! Would someone else please PM Michael about that? I spent my entire nagging quota just to get the thread up and running... :worried:
Yes Silvoplee is nice but I don't go there anymore since I got pissed because they used to be all vegan and now they're lacto-veg. Grr :( I work in the city center so I'm right next to Vege and go there for lunch quite often :)

Silvoplee is vegan once a week (or the buffet is, anyway), I was told, coincidentally the same day as I was there. :D This might have somewhat skewed my judgement a bit.
Hey, my avatar is from the Finland trip!

Yes but it used to be everyday and now it just sucks :( *sulks*
Hey, my avatar is from the Finland trip!
Hmm, is that from Suomenlinna? Why did you come to Finland anyway? Not that you need a reason as such, I'm just curious :p

Suomenlinna? Um. I'm not good with names... especially Finnish ones :worried: Anyway it's from that fortress out on those islands outside of Helsinki.
It was some stupid bachelor party. Lots of   , but good fun too. A friend from university is getting married to a Finnish girl, and all his Norwegian friends came over and stayed for almost a week. He got to see Helsinki from helicopter, and also try his luck as a street hair-cutter (free hair-cut, free beer). :p

Yes, that's Suomenlinna :)
BTW.. It's Scandinavia, not Scandanavia.

Just curious, are there any big veggie groups in Norway? I did a search and came across one in Oslo (Norwegian Vegetarian Society?), but I'm not sure how active they are. I'm starting to think more seriously about trying to plan a climbing trip to Norway (maybe next year) and thought it would be cool to meet up with other veg*ns. I wonder how many Norwegian climbers also happen to be veg*n...probably like here in the U.S., not many. :)

I'm not sure whether the Norwegian Vegetarian Society is still active. We do have an AR group which is quite active (NOAH (http://www.noahonline.org)).
Regarding veg climbers... A few years ago (4 years or so), I went to see my cousin participate in the Norwegian indoor climbing championship. And behold! - one of the participants was wearing a t-shirt that said "meat is murder". :surprised
