Hello, my husband is from Helsinki, Finland. We live in New Jersey, United States right now. We're planning a trip to Finland (and Helsinki) in late summer 2006.
Does anyone have any idea if Helsinki is vegetarian-friendly, and/or of any good vegetarian restaurants in that city?

Vihannes: I was in Helsinki for some days in 2004, and have the restaurant address cards (http://www.veggieboards.com/gallery/showimage.php?i=6728&c=) to prove it :)
Vege, Zucchini and Ravintola Silvoplee are the vegetarian restaurants in Helsinki that I visited. If I recall correctly, Zucchini and Vege are fairly central (esp. Zucchini). I still preferred Silvoplee, but that was a bit further away.
If you're lacto-ovo vegetarian, it shouldn't be a major problem. You can even find some fast-food places with vegetarian food. If you're vegan, it's harder, but there's always the Chinese/Asian restaurants. You should also be able to find something edible in the grocery stores. If they provide meals at the hotel/B&B, definately call/email to let them know what you can eat.
Welcome to VB!

Those sound great- thank you! We will be staying with my husband's parents so I will be in good shape there. But of course we also want to go out in the city, and it will be fun to go to a veg restaurant while we are there.

I'm in sweden now, and the food is excellent and abundant. many of the meals i have had are easily veganized if one were to ask (i haven't). when i don't see anything vegetarian on the menu, i simply ask and they make something for me. so far, it's been great. one place even made me 'swedish meatballs' out of beets, carrot, onion, etc and then made a special sauce--anyway, it was excellent.
we head to helsinki next, actually--arriving on friday. i look forward to good food there too!

Hi everyone,
A new Danish (nonprofit) website has opened - http://www.vegetarkontakt.dk
You can talk to other people, share recipes and all that :)

Det er kult, ellyodd! There can never be too many vegetarian web sites in Scandinavia.
Does anyone know of any good Scandinavian vegan Christmas food recipies?
I'm especially interested in vegan pickled "herring", which I believe is a Swedish dish. I once had some pickled aubergine that I thought was really special, probably because of the spices. Not sure, but there might have been juniper berries in there.

I like a food made from rutabagas* which I can't translate into English. The direct translation would be "rutabaga box". I put a lot of ketchup on it and enjoy.
*that's a weird name, I had to look it up - other names are swede and yellow turnip - is the plural really "rutabagas"? That would be good material for a tribal chanting song: "rutabagas rutabagas rutabagas" Anyway..

I live in Bergen Norway and there is one vegetarian restaurant (that I know of). But most restaurants have some vegetarian dishes. Im lacto-ovo.

I'm assuming it's some kind of mashed rutabaga then. Not really one of my favourites, but I could tolerate it as part of a dish. (Not the ketchup, though.)

Jen says "rutabagas" is fine, but "rutabaga" will also work.

Bor på Askøy, ikke Bergen, for å være helt korrekt. Har bodd her i 22 av 23 år (- 1 år I Spania). :)
