So I am a vegitarian as you could probaly guess. Im thinking about becoming vegan but I LOVE milk, cheese, yogurt and icream. I also dont belive its harming the animals if the are orgaincly raised and well treaten. Ive never tryed soy products, becuse I know I hate mock meat! Is there any reason I should be a vegan?

Well, here's something to think about: Cows only lactate after they've given birth, so to get the milk, the cows are forcefully impregnated. Then, what to do with the calf? The females will be most likely sold a dairy cows and most (If not all) the baby bulls are slaughtered for veal.

That's why I stopped doing dairy...if not for you, it's all good....in a sense....

Soy delicious is totally good, and I love mock meats. They rock my world. Don't know what to do about cheese. I don't miss it. As for milk, soymilk! Duh!!! :p

hmmm , i'm not vegan yet, i believe this might take some time but i did try vegan yogurt today !
i had the Whole Soy brand, stawberry flavour
it tasted pretty good, a lot like regual yogurt .... had a bit of that soy taste but i liked it
i know i wouldn't have a problem eating that instead of real yogurt
what i'm saying is, i know how you feel, you don't want to give up things, but if you replace them with something very similar you'll be fine i think

I stopped eating dairy/eggs because I thought they were disgusting. Giving up dairy was pretty hard for me, but only because i love candy, and about 70% of candy has dairy in it. Milk is easy enough to replace with soymilk, other stuff is not so easy.

Sorry I can't help more, but just remember that 90% of it is half mental. That's from Yogi Berra.

How do you know you hate mock meat if you've never had it? Because mock meats are soy products.

But anyways, yeah, what everyone else said. The cows are impregnated. And think about it. Eggs come from a chicken. The inside of a chicken. Eww.

I'm vegan because I don't believe it's right to take something for the animals, from the animals, what have you.

Soy yogurt and soy ice cream (namely Tofutti) are absolutely incredible.

I never was a big milk or cheese fan, but if you wanted to get to like soymilk, maybe you could mix regular milk and soymilk together at a 1 to 1 ratio and then gradually add more soymilk and less regular milk over time until you are only drinking soy. As far as cheese goes, I've heard good things about Vegan Gourmet, I believe it's called, but for me, I don't even bother.

I think the key is finding vegan foods that you love just as much as dairy so you don't feel deprived.

Also a dairy cow can only produce enough for a commercial farm for about 5 years, after that they go to the slaughter house too. Even on organic farms they don't let a cow sit around and eat grass for the extra 15 years where it wouldn't produce enough milk.

They should let them...*goes off muttering something about adopting all the cows from the dairy farm*

I'm planning my adult life around adopting farm sanctuary animals rescued from the dairy farm, among other places.

I love farm sanctuary, can't wait to visit :smitten:

I tried a vegan cheese that uses seitan (forgot the name of it). I thought it was pretty good, but definitely not like the real thing.

Hmm, I thought soy cheese would at least have a better texture than the kind I had. Never tried it though.

']i had the Whole Soy brand

oh, HELL YES! dude, this stuff is awesome. for some strange reason, we used to get cases of the lemon flavor when we were on welfare, and i gobbled that stuff down like crazy (and that was before i showed any interest in anything resembling a health food!) -- then i couldn't find it in stores for *years*. but the other day, i found some at one of the co-ops i go to... i bought them out of their lemon flavor :D
