Budda and I are adopting two birds, and I'm so excited I can't wait until they're actually ours before posting. :hamster: (Sorry, Budda!)
Budda wanted a bird that talks, so we decided on an Amazon parrot. We went to visit two Amazons at their foster home last Friday evening, and we were both really taken by one of them. He's twenty, and doesn't talk, but he's a real sweetheart. His name is currently RC, but we've decided that he's going to be renamed "Paco".
While we were there, a little Quaker parrot named Cecil made some heavy duty passes at me, which I returned :trick: and we ended up deciding to adopt him too. (He seems to hate men, so he's right up my alley. :D )
Our home visit is on Saturday afternoon, and we're just about bursting with excitement. Budda will post some pictures next week, I'm sure. :smitten:

Thats wonderful! I've always wanted to adopt birds when I get out of the house, no one ever thinks about adopting them, everyone wants a breeder baby :(
It's so great you guys get to help these two out. I have a friend with a quaker parrot named honey, whos adorable, I'm sure you'll all be a verry happy family :)

Aww congrats!! You'd better post many pictures!
We have an Amazon Grey parrot that comes in for boarding every now and again. His name is Rocky and he has a little crush on me. Probably because I'm the only one that isn't afraid of him. He likes to eat pecans then throw them up on me, so he can share with me. Isn't that.....sweet? :p

Congrats, mouse! My father in law had one of those yellow headed Amazon parrots and it talked all the damn time; wouldn't shut up unless it was in a covered cage. It knew his and his wife's names and would squawk them out all the time, as well as stuff like "What's for supper" and "Turn on CNN". It would also shriek like a madman on a regular basis. His was about 40, and it would flat out attack me when I came over there. He kept its wings clipped and let it stay out of a cage on a perch but it could still lunge, hiss and bite and it was always quite willing to do so when *I* came around. You'd probably love his as well. :D
He sold it to someone else when he got cancer and couldn't tend to it. Last I heard it was still doing fine. I read not long ago that Winston Churchill's parrot is still alive and cussing up a storm at it's new owner's place, though they estimate its age as being at least 80 . . . :D

Cecil was given as a gift to a family who wasn't really wild about having a bird. He came down with a slight bug of some sort and stopped eating. After he hadn't eaten for two weeks, the people finally decided to take him to the vet. The vet said he was too emaciated to live, at which point the rescue group was called. They picked him up and took him to their vet, where he spent a week in the hospital, and has been tended by his foster mom ever since. Cecil has a lot of pluck and self confidence, and I think he's going to get into all kinds of mischief. :smitten:
Paco has a problem with his right eye. It needs daily attention, and apparently it "put off" other prospective adopters, but it, together with his sweet personality, made us decide on him rather than one of the other amazons up for adoption. We figure the others will find homes regardless, and we think that Paco will be a very loving bird; he just needs patience and a lot of loving attention. :smitten: We will take him to the vet as soon as we get him, to have his eye looked at to see whether anything can be done. His foster mom says that it doesn't give him any pain, but he' seems self conscious about it; he tries to keep that side of his face turned away.

You're right, Bank, I probably would! :D (Although I can actually sympathize with you - I was terrorized by one of our chickens for a good part of my grade school years. )
Thanks for the link to the article about Churchill's macaw. From what I've read, macaws actually have a shorter life expectancy, on average, than amazons. We knew that Paco will outlive us, and we have to make provision for that. But now I'm thinking in terms of a separate retirement fund for him. :worried:

Oh that's right, it IS a macaw, isn't it . . . duh :dunce:

That's O.K. - macaws are classified as parrots, so you were correct.

while you should plan for his future because it is very possible he might outlive you, you shouldn't think of 50 or 60 or whatever you've heard as an average. most amazons won't actually make it that long. it's like how humans can live to be 100, but most don't.

Thanks, ynaffit. I figure that, one way or another, I'll be sharing my life with feathered/furry friends to the end, so I've always thought in terms of making provision for them. It's just kind of funny, at 48, to have a companion animal who may very likely outlive me. It puts a new perspective on my mortality! :D
