A slaughterhouse in China is giving pigs showers, saunas and massages before chopping them up.
Light music is played as the pigs are pampered before being electrocuted.
The manager of the abattoir in Mianyang, Sichuan province, said he decided to give the pigs a final treat because he wanted their deaths to be as humane as possible.
Guo Xianfeng told the Tianfu Morning Post the pigs fell asleep after the sauna and massage and felt no pain when they were electrocuted.
i wasnt sure where to put this so please feel free to move it, i just thought i could gage peoples reactions to it

Well, being that I have huge issues with the cruelty of factory farming, I have to say that this sounds pretty good considering the fact that it is still slaughter.
I wonder how true it all is, though. If it's as they claim, it's certainly better than many, many alternatives.

not to be crude, but they do say that the meat tastes better when the animals are under less stress. That's one reason Temple Grandin's research into animal welfare reforms is usually well recieved by slaughterhouse officials.

Well that is still nice, but a little sick. How about you don't kill the pigs at all and not go through all that!! I guess they feel bad, and still should!

I meant "nice" as in it's a lot better than mistreating them, at least they have a few minutes of peace before they die. Sad that they have to die though, yeah.
Strange, but nice.

wow, i'm picturing it in my head now, and it is supremely depressing...
all these little pink pigs getting luxurious steam baths and calmly walking around in fluffy white towels, softly oinking in contentment as they are lovingly massaged... and all the while they don't realize that these same people that are taking such good care of them now are going to be the same ones that end their lives. :( i think i'm a little melodramatic, but i find that sad.
at least they're trying...
i've heard that when they slaughter dogs for meat, they believe that the more traumatic the death, the better the meat tastes, because of the excess adrenaline released. i won't even describe the most common method of killing them because i'll probably make myself ill. :(

Because money makes the world go round. And slaughtering these pigs may be his only way of feeding his own family. At least he cares enough to let them enjoy the short time that they have to live. While it's not a utopian way of doing it, it's better than treating them some other ways.

I guess his intentions are good and all, but it kinda reminds me of people in death row getting thier last meal. "Sure, have a steak..a lobster even..sureeeee u can have the crispy potatoes with it. Apple pie? No problem. Comfy? Great. Cya." *injects*

Yeh, that's what i was thinking, the Koreans like to take their time (up to an hour i think) to kill a dog to build up the adrenaline in it's body :-/ . But i'm sure the case is different with pigs, the calmer the pigs are before and during slaughter, the longer the shelf life of the meat. So i guess this probably isn't for the pigs sake.

what do you mean bizaroo?
i was just making a snide and probably inappropriate remark that maybe he has taken his love for animals a little further than we'd care to think. personally, i think this sounds creepy.

well, i hope knowing that the piggies were killed in their sleep makes them feel better about eating their flesh :)
*being very sarcastic*
i don't think they care at all

Dunno... I feel they should rather treat them well for the short time they are alive than locking them into crowded, stinking stables. That`s not a life.
I think making their life as nice as possible, letting them out on the fields and giving them plenty space is better than "pampering" them before they get slaughtered.
Can they not just shoot them in their sleep while grassing so that their lives were nice and fulfilling till the last minute?

PS: I am surprised that this is in China where people treat animals so much worse than they do here!
