I've never had a hamster before. But the man and I decided to get one, since we can't have a dog right now, I'm allergic to cats, and fish aren't very cuddly. So if you have hamsters... I need your best advice. We got him all set up and he seems happy and he's making a nest.

Cute. :)
I miss having hamsters. If I had more time for them, I'd definetely consider adopting another. We actually have a hamster/small animal rescue group nearby.

Cool! Our two local shelters have hamsters sometimes. That's where I adopted Dory (my hamster) a few years ago, and several female gerbils after that. But of course these shelters have mostly cats and dogs.
Dory wasn't very affectionate, though.

I need to get some better pictures of Jake. He has such a cute little pink nose and pretty black markings on his back. But he's sleeping now. He seems to have settled into his new home pretty well. It has a "penthouse" feature and he pulled a bunch of bedding up the little tubes and made himself a nest. He seems pretty affectionate. He didn't mind being held. And when you come up to the cage he comes right up to you and sticks his nose out the window. :)

I've raised many a hamster. My best advice is rinse and refill his water bottle daily, check all cage doors regularly to make sure they aren't getting loose, clean out the cage (and nest! or it stinks) often, and never use cedar bedding. Other than that, peanuts in the shell are fun to give them cause sometimes they try jamming the whole thing in their pouch, and if they don't, its fun to watch them shell it. :)
Congratulations on your new little friend!
