View Full Version : Vegan bath and beauty products...AKA "The Girly Meme".
This meme was going around LJ recently and I filled it out, and I thought it would be fun and educational to post it here, too.
HAIR
Alberto V05 Lavender & Chamomile
Garnier Nutrisse True Red (About every 3 months)
Cheap oval brush from Wal-Mart.
BODY
Origins Ginger Burst Savory Body Wash
Origins Ginger Souffle Whipped Body Cream
**Secret Platinum Protection
Calgon Moon Petal Musk body spray
Origins Cream Bar for facial cleansing
Origins United State Balancing Tonic
Origins Balanced Diet Lightweight Moisture Lotion
Origins Swept Away Exfoliating Scrub
Origins Clear Improvement Active Charcoal Masque
MAKEUP
*Origins Original Coverage in Porcelain
*Almay concealer stick in "light"
*Almay brown eyeliner pencil
*Jane light brown eyeshadow
*Ulta white sand eyeshadow
*Ulta desert rose blush
All Around The World vegan hempbalm in spearmint.
*Makeup is worn very rarely. The non-Origins products are pre-vegan. I've had that eyeshadow for two years, for example. When the non-vegan products are used up, I will replace them with vegan products. On a daily basis, I just wear moisturizer and lip balm.
**Yes, I know Secret is made by P&G, and I know P&G is evil. I hate buying this product, but I think I've tried every vegan deodorant on the market and none of it has worked. I can't go around stinky! The only thing I haven't tried is the crystal/stone thing, and I just can't wrap my mind around that one. Of all the deodorants I've ever worn, this is the only one I feel confident in.
So to satisfy the "meme" portion of this post, I'm asking that everyone post this with the products they use, and to satisfy the "product review" portion, please comment on how satisfied you are with the products you use.
Maybe we can all get some ideas on good products with this. ^^
(Note, this is current as of today, but things run out and I replace them periodically, so when we look back at this six months from now, at least half my list will be different. Also, I'm pretty sure we've had something like this before here, but we have a lot of new members, so that's my justification.)

I have completely non-vegan toiletries at this point. I'm waiting for things to run out before I replace them. So I am totally looking to get some ideas for this.
HAIR - Mine is fine but shiny, so I need volume
Dove Shampoo & Conditioner
Thermasilk shiny volume spray (for when I blow dry which is infrequent)
Either Colour Expert or Nice & Easy every 3 months
BODY/FACE
Softsoap Milk & Honey Bodywash
Aveeno lotions (I get itchy)
Skintimate Shave Lotion & Aftershave Gel
Venus Razors (love those dang things!)
Dove Deodorant
Clean & Clear Face Washes
Clean & Clear Toners
Clean & Clear Moisturizers (I have the skin of a teenager AND gray hair, it's so not fair!)
Clean & Clear Facial Mask
MAKEUP
Burts Bees Lip Balm (that's gonna be hard to give up when I go vegan)
Mary Kay mascara, eye & cheek colors
Bonne Bell Lip glosses
Neutrogena Clear Skin foundation
Wet & Wild eye & lip liners
I need to do some research on some of my tried and trues. I'm torn about my burts bees stuff. It's the only stuff that keeps my lips from being all crackly and gross. I am looking for some good vegan products for my face that will help with my problem skin. Also a good sunscreen. We are moving to Florida this Friday and my skin is pretty fair. Despite my dark hair I come from a long line of redheads.
I separated body and face to make it easier on me ^^;; I'm in the process of getting vegan toiletries/etc, so I have little comments to differentiate.

This is interesting! Since I went vegan, there are some products I haven't "found" my "one" yet... I'm still trying to find a shampoo I love, for example. And I kind of am iffy about certain things, like Burt's Bees products. The soap is perfect for my very acne-prone skin, so I loathe to give it up. But currently (comments in parens):
Hair
BWC Moisture Plus Shampoo (Ok, but not great for my dry hair)
Face
Burt's Bees Tomato Soap (The only soap that keeps my skin clear)
Burt's Bees Lettuce Toner
Kiss My Face Oil-Free Moisturizer (Nice for face AND body)
Body
Clearly Natural Soap (I like unscented in summer so I don't attract bees--I'm allergic)
Kiss My Face Oil-Free Moisturizer
Cosmetics
Bare Escentuals Mineral Foundation (LOVE this stuff!)
Ecco Bella Lipsticks
Ecco Bella Mascara
That's it. I have simple routine.

HAIR - I switch between these two:
Aussie Moist Conditioner for Dry/Damaged Hair
Aussie Moist Shampoo for Dry/Damaged Hair
(I know how missleigh loves the word 'moist.' Heh.)
Biolage by Matrix Ultra-Hydrating Shampoo
Biolage by Matrix Ultra-Hydrating Balm
BODY
Neutrogena Body Clear Body Wash
Neutrogena Oil Control Pads
Neutrogena Body Clear Lotion (discontinued, found on Ebay)
Dove Beauty Bar Sensitive Skin
St. Ives Extra Relief Collagen Elastin
Smooth Legs Shave Minimizing Moisturizer
Alba Botanica Moisturizing Cream Shave, Pearberry
Tend Skin
FACE - I switch around depending on skin dryness and humidity:
Proactiv Renewing Cleanser
Proactiv Revitalizing Toner
Proactiv Repairing Lotion (also used on chest, shoulders)
Proactiv Oil Free Moiture with SPF 15
Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser, Normal to Oily Skin
Cetaphil Daily Facial Moisturizer, SPF 15, Fragrance Free
Neutrogena Healthy Skin Eye Cream
MAKEUP
Bare Minerals SPF 15 Powder Foundation in Fair (duh)
Bare Escentuals Mineral Veil Face Powder
bareMinerals Blush in Beauty
bareMinerals Eye Shadow in Snow, Chenille, and Java
bareMinerals lipstick in Hubba Hubba (worn most often, anyway)
Maybeline Lash Discovery Waterproof in Soft Black
Ulta eye shadow in black (as liner - can't think of the frou-frou name)
Mary Kay liquid eyeliner in black
Wow, I use a lot of products. Yeah, some aren't veg, or cruelty free. I have to go with brands and products I know will not irritate my skin. I can breakout or have another type of problem just thinking about it.

I know! I'm not acne-prone, but I can break out in hives just thinking about it! I have über-sensitive skin

About a million different varieties of lotion, my favorite being Green Tea nad Citrus from Creative Scentsations, which I get from the beauty supply shop, and it's vegan!)

Creative and OPI nailpolish (This is what I use in my salon, and also on myself. I also have a few No Miss and Mark. ones at home that I like)
Yves Rocher eyeshadows, lots of colors (pretty nice, I have alot of colors, but I don't wear them much)
Almay Purecolor lip tints (no idea if they test or not, but I like them and I got these for cheap at Big Lots)
Update: I ran out of the V05, and when I went to Whole Foods with Missleigh the other night, I picked up some Nature's Gate Organic shampoo that smells great and leaves my hair very soft and shiny, so I totally recommend it.
I also got some BWC hairspray. I don't use it often, but it's nice to have a light hold spray to tame those flyaways that I sometimes get.

Hair Care:
JPM Extra Body Shampoo and Conditioner
JPM Soft Spray Gel
Face:
Avalon Organics Vitamin C (Toner, Moisturizer, Cleanser, Lip Balm)
Kiss My Face Moisture Shave (currently Key Lime)
Body/Other
Mitchum Deoderant
Shikai Lotion Apricot Rose Sent
Kiss My Face Olive Oil and Chamomile Soap (body)
Kiss My Face Almond Scented Moisture Soap (hands)
Toms of Maine Toothepaste (Cinnamint)
Alba Botanical 30 SPF Sunscreen with Lavender (insect repellent)
Like most men, I don't wear makeup. I figured I used some products others don't so my posting might be helpful anyway. I'm very happy with all of these products, I've used a lot of the available (in the US) vegan personal care products. Most of them are fairly mid range with respect to price. None are particularly expensive.
-Edit: Added Moisture Shave

Hair
Revlon dark brown and auburn hair dye (I wish I didn?t have to dye my hair, but it was blue last year, and the blue keeps coming back so I have to cover it up. Gonna try henna dye next time I think)
Daily Defense shampoo and conditioner (We never stick to the same brand. This stuff my mom bought on sale and I have no clue about the veganess of it. Definitely going for herbal essence next time)
Face
Apricot scrub (using it up. Is this vegan by the way? I have heard conflicting answers. Something about cows in it)
North Coast Co-Op Vegan lip balm in spearmint
Body
Tom?s of Maine deodorant in Honeysuckle rose (works great)
Shikai (sp?) lotion in vanilla (works great. Not all oily and a lot of the ingredients are organic)
Gillete razor
Neutrogena shaving cream (it?s actually my dads, but it?s all we ever have. Works well though)
Dr. Bronners peppermint soap (man, this stuff will take off ANY thing. Can put it in your hair for an intensive clean)
Make up
I almost never wear it. Usually only for band concerts. I bought all of it a few years ago in my before vegan days.
Bonnie Bell concealor stick
NYC eye liner in brown
NYC eye shadow trio pack
Cover girl mascara
Apricot scrub (using it up. Is this vegan by the way? I have heard conflicting answers. Something about cows in it)
If it's the St. Ives stuff, it isn't tested on animals, but it's not vegan - I think it has lanolin or something.
Where? did my post go? hmmmm.....:)

Is Herbal Essences vegan? I just got some of that and it makes my hair look awesome!
Herbal Essences itself does not contain any animal products and is not tested on animals, but it is owned by Clairol, which does test on animals.
It's a shame, because I love it. It smells great and makes my hair look fantastic. But I don't want to buy from Clairol if I can avoid it, so...
Yeah. I buy it because it's the best I can find for what I can afford.

That's how I felt when I switched from V05 to Herbal Essences. My hair looked and felt so much better after only one or two days!
Which formula do you use? I squatted in the shampoo aisle at the drug store for a good 5-10 minutes trying to decide. My hair is acting funny (not to mention the humidity/frizz), and that usually means I need to switch up products. Good thing they're used to me doing that at this store. I stand there comparing ingredients, brands, package claims, etc. (No, I'm not anal retentive. Not me!)
