Are there any recommended brands of Veggie Hotdogs?
I've tried two so far...and they were TERRIBLE.
I can't remember the names to warn you off though.
One came in an orange box. (Quron? something like that)
And tasted like a wet firecracker or a toiletpaper roll. Yuck!
The other came in the familiar plastic hotdog packaging.
It had some GOLD MEDAL from some supposedly independent
taste test. It too was dreadful. Tasted like plastic.
Now as far as sausages go...I LOVE LOVE LOVE Boca's Bratwurst.
They are SO good. (Although I loath Boca's hamburgers which
I know many people like. I MUCH prefer Mornstar Farms Prime Grillers!)
So If anyone can hip me to some yummy hotdogs, I'd appreciate!

I used to be a big fan of boca's brats until I went vegan (they contain egg whites.) I would suggest Tofurky's brats and sausages... we love them!

The one with the gold medal was probably Yves "The Good Dog" which is supposed to be the best you'll find... so I fear you're out of luck.

I will only eat veggie dogs if they are encased in cornbread... That said, I love the Trader Joe's brand if you have that around you!

My favorite is Yves...so agreed, if that's what you tried and you didn't like them, I'm not sure what I would recommend!

Man, I would dig me some vegan corn dogs...just don't seem to exist.

I think the Trader Joe's ones were. I know the Morningstar ones aren't. But they are tasty. You can make your own too. And they are so good.

I'll look into Trader Joe's. And yes, I should certainly make some of my own! *mmmm*

Regarding the Yve's...I mic'ed 'em.
Which I would guess is not the best way to cook 'em.
I should give 'em another shot in a frying pan or grill.
Because the Boca Brat Sausages are SO yummy. I KNOW it can be done.
I mean...Red Bamboo in NYC. They have veggie steak sandwhiches.
And WOW! They are SO yummy.
So anything can be done. We can set all the animals free! Yay!
Imagine that.
Bring on the Veggie Filet Mignon!
(Sorry...I'm a former carnivore that still likes to eat that
kind of stuff...in SOY form!) :-)
Thanks,

The Trader Joe's brand is actually the Morningstar corndogs, packaged on their private label, so they're not vegan either.
I have a good corn dog recipe, if you don't have a fear of frying.

toddamo, if you want to microwave your hot dogs, try doing it with them in a bowl of water. If you do them straight, they're like rubber. I've found veggie dogs respond best to boiling, and then maybe a quick toss in a pan, if you want them a little crunchy.

I definitely didn't like Morningstar's hot dogs, but I think I overcooked them. I quite enjoy Smart Dogs with a reasonable amount of condiment to help "blend" the flavor. Actually, they're good with a little barbecue sauce, since they are sort of smoky. Those are the only two brands I've tried.

I think Morningstar Farms hotdogs are definitly the best! But I guess some people don't like them. I think they taste the most like the real thing.

I use Veggie dogs by "IVES", I think they are an excellent product, good texture, flavor, and can be grilled, boiled, broiled, or fried if you like em like that. 5* product in my opinion.

My favorites in order of appearance are:
Morningstar (not vegan)
Quorn (not vegan)
Boca sausages (not vegan)
Smartdogs (vegan)
Oh yes! I also either boil them on the stove or micro them in a bowl of water. Some fare ok on a grill, but they are tastier if you boil them.

My favorite are Tofu Pups, which come in a red and white package. As far as I know, they are vegan, unless something has changed since the last time I had one.
They taste good microwaved, boiled, and grilled. (Although they aren't necessarily authentic tasting, they're just better than any other brand I've tried.)
I haven't been able to find them at any regular supermarket, only at Whole Foods, which is about an hour away from me. :(

I used to eat the Morningstar hotdogs before I went vegan. Those were super close the the real thing, from what I can remember.
Now, I eat tofu pups. They're pretty good. Way better than all the other vegan ones I've tried!!

I remember tofu pups tasting like ass, but so many people like them, I should give them another try.

I only have one option where I live now: Morningstar. They aren't bad though - if you steam them. I'm looking forward to moving and going around trying all the various hot dog and specialty meat analogs out there (35 more days!!!)

But isn't that what hot dogs are SUPPOSED to taste like? :spew:
I used to get Yves good dogs until they stopped selling them... They were OK.

I really like Yves The "Good" dog. It's different then their veggie dog. I just nuke them in a little water.
