ok, i've heard a million times from my mother that you should eat yogurt while taking antibiotics to prevent a yeast infection. is this true? i'm on antibiotics and i was wondering if it helps, and if so, would soy yogurt do the same thing?

hmm...i'm a little confused as to how eating yogurt would help with yeast infection prevention.
eating yogurt is good for your intestinal tract while on antibiotics so you don't lose all of the flora in there. i've heard putting yogurt in your vagina is good to treat a yeast infection. and i know strong antibiotics can help cause a yeast infection. but i don't think just eating the yogurt would help that.

If the yogurt has active cultures, it will help replace the good bacteria that the antibiotic kills (along with the bad). That's what I hear, anyway.

There is an article here about Probiotics: http://www.guardian.co.uk/weekend/story/0,3605,1210758,00.html
It says that the live cultures in yoghurts are destroyed in the stomach, but probiotics aren't, so you could try taking them but that only works in the gut. It is certainly true that antibiotics can cause vaginal yeast infections though, like castwym says. Live yoghurts applied topically might help avoid them though, if you're prone to them.

antibiotics can cause them, because they have a tendancy to kill the good bacteria along with the bad bacteria. I was always told that eating the yogurt could help, but I don't know what if any medical proof exists to back that up.
