bizarro

I was just wondering if there is anything out there comparable to leathers for those who ride motorcycles. I can't imagine rubber based chaps or jackets would protect a biker from road rash if they fell, or burns. In fact it seems like it would melt into the skin!
I don't need this type of gear personally, this is just out of curiosity. Maybe starting this thread would help somebody who browses the board..?
I had a friend who struggled with this. He had a sports coat he was working on attaching bottle caps to?!? It looked pretty dorky and seemed like it would hurt if you went down and maybe make you skid along the road more which cant be good. Plus it wasnt very protective for the weather. I think he eventually just sold the bike rather than buy leather but most people who love to ride would never do that.
