So in tracking my daily food and exercise, it seems the only vitamin I'm deficient on on a daily basis is Vitamin K. Though, I don't really think I am cause of my calcium chews, and there's no way to customize in vitamin K.. but I was wondering, what is it for anyway? I know we give it to dogs who have eaten rat poison, but I didn't know there was an RDA for vitamin K! Are the people at the Bureau for the Promotion of the Letter K pulling a fast one on me?

p.s. i am getting, on average, 3X the RDA of B vitamins and Iron every day :p hard on a schmegan diet my rump!

Definition

Vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin that plays an important role in blood clotting.
Function

Vitamin K is known as the clotting vitamin, because without it blood would not clot. Some studies indicate that it helps in maintaining strong bones in the elderly.
Food Sources

Vitamin K is found in cabbage, cauliflower, spinach and other green leafy vegetables, cereals, soybeans, and other vegetables. Vitamin K is also made by the bacteria that line the gastrointestinal tract.
Side Effects

Vitamin K deficiency is very rare and occurs when there is an inability to absorb the vitamin from the intestinal tract. Vitamin K deficiency can also occur after prolonged treatment with oral antibiotics.

Individuals with vitamin K deficiency usually have an increased propensity to bruising and bleeding.

so somehow you must get it from something.

Why do you think you don't get enough vitamin K?

i don't think that i'm not getting enough, but i've been using fitday.com to enter in what i eat/how much i exercise every day, and it gives you all these charts and graphs and everything and tells you what RDA % of vitamins and minerals you're getting, and i'm above 100% in everything every day, except Vitamin K. If I actually wasn't getting enough from food every day, i do try to take two calcium chews, each has 50% of your RDA of vitamin K, daily, so I wasn't really concerned, I was more curious.

vegetables I see (almost) never go with a nutrition label.
