Viacom's (VIA) MTV unit plans to launch in 2005 an ad-supported cable entertainment network aimed at gays and lesbians.

The network, to be called LOGO, comes as gay culture has gone mainstream on TV with gay-themed shows such as NBC's Will and Grace, Bravo's Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and Showtime's The L Word. More marketers are seeking to directly target the nation's 10 million to 15 million gay and lesbian consumers, who wield an estimated $450 billion in disposable income.

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation hailed the news. "This channel has enormous potential — and who better to make the investment than the network that has brought us The Real World?" said executive director Joan Garry in a statement.

I think there are more than 10 to 15 million gay consumers.

The question is, will it suck as bad as everything else MTV has produced since the mid 1990s? I mean, do we really need more reality shows involving clueless 20-somethings living in a reality-free bubble of a house?

"The Real Gay Cancun" Made me glad I cut off my cable when I did.

I thought there were more than that as well Mikie. Although I think someone would do a better job of it, just cause I'm not real fond of MTV.

Headbanger's Ball's like the only part of MTV I could never stand to watch. I like the cheesy reality shows. And MTV always has some of the best cartoons.

I might be tempted to watch a gay tv network knowing MTV is backing it. If some other network, like Lifetime or Bravo, was behind it I doubt I'd tune in.
