And my two cents: Maybe citronella? I don't know what kind of bugs you don't want to bother you. But citronella will keep mosquitos away.

Burts Bees has the lemongrass bug wipe stuff. That might work.

I think tea tree oil is supposed to work, or maybe eucalyptus?

How about these ones? http://www.differentdaisy.com/nexternalhtml/bug-ease-natural-insect-repellent.htm
The natural alternatives usually have to be appllied every 2 to 4 hours, depending on how much you sweat. Like Christy13 said, tea tree oil, eucalyptus and also lavender are bug repellents.
ETA: I think Jason's has a bug repellent too.

I like to look around like I'm on speed, turn in circle & zig zag patterns all the while screaming that I'm itching everywhere.. that seems to confuse them a bit.

Pennyroyal works really well to keep flys and misquitos away.

Eat Marmite. Apparently bugs seldom bite Marmite eaters. They sense it in your skin.
I heard that on the radio the other day and I really hope it's true. I seldom get bitten but my husband is massacred - he hates Marmite.

We use Kiss My Face's Fly Swotter and it works pretty good, unless you're really sweaty. If I'm mowing the grass or something, the bugs are just attracted to me :/

this is no longer legal in the us and highly toxic. where are you buying it?

too late for you OP but maybe this will work for somebody in a pinch. while its not vegan, its is a common household product and a good alternative to using nothing. BOUNCE dryer sheets are supposed to repel them.
also tea tree oil is supposed to repel most insects.
and what about brewers yeast and garlic? i know this helps repel fleas when fed to pets...

I have never bought it. There is a tons of pennyroyal at my uncles house on the path to the river. Now that I have heard about it I did know that it was toxic-but I don't eat it. I just mash it up with a little water and dab in on my skin. My mom and brother both use if for insect repellant, both of them being highly knowledgeable in the plant area, and neither have warned me against it.
I have never used the Burt's Bee's lemongrass spray for insect repelant but I am betting it works really well. My one experience with it was this morning when my hyper teacher sprayed some on my friend who was goofing off, who in turn wiped some on me when I started laughing. After 10 hours my shirt still smells like it.
