View Full Version : Where do you buy your clothes?

Do you care about whether they may be made in sweatshops? Do you tend to go for only natural/organic fabrics? Do you only buy used?
And an aside question: How can you find out if a company uses sweatshop labor? I mostly wear designer labels (I buy them either on clearance or at outlet stores. I'm not big on paying full price) like Baby Phat, Calvin Klein, Espirit, and LOTS of Tommy Hilfiger. I like hemp and organic cotton, but find it too expensive to buy very much of it. I do have a nice hemp coat from EarthSpeaks that I got on clearance for half-off (and it was still 119$!!!!)
Shameless Plug: I also love the Jr. Raglan tees from my website which are made in the US by American Apparel. :smitten:

I care whether they are made in sweatshops, but I won't refuse to buy products that are made in sweatshops. I believe we need sweatshop reform, not boycotts that cause people to lose their jobs and seek even lower still forms of income. I would probably avoid buying American made goods if I could help it, but I generally don't concern myself with looking at labels.
I don't tend to go for natural or organic fabrics.
I get my clothes wherever I find them. Usually Wal-Mart or eBay or Kohls or Goodwill.

I work for Sears, so since I get a nice discount, I get most of my clothes there. I do get things at other places though. I like shopping in second hand stores, but my husband hates the idea of wearing something somebody else wore, so we don't shop in there as often as I would like.

Hey, I used to work for Sears! Once in high school and once right after college.

I get my clothes from lots of different places. I like buying second-hand, but I have a hard time finding things that fit right. I'll go to TJ Max, Target, and those kind of places. I never shop at stores like gap, ect. I'll get things online too, like Sailor Jerry, Torrid, ect.

Usually online or secondhand. However, I usually can't find what i really really want, so sometimes, i make clothes.

I like things that are black and fit me well. So, anywhere that has that. I would like to be more ethical about my clothes, and study labor practices. But I currently don't do much in that area, which makes me feel somewhat guilty. I'm working on it, though.

Yes I give the sweatshop thing a lot of thought. I have "rules" about my clothing buying.
I don't tend to go for natural fibres though.... cotton, but not hemp or anything more exotic than cotton. :p
I refuse to wear anything that is overtly "branded." I will wear brand names, but only if they are made in Canada/USA, and if they're on sale. I will not pay full price for them. The made in Canada/USA is the most important one. If something is made in China, Pakistan etc. it has to be correspondingly cheap (as the idea of Tommy H paying 9 cents an hour for labour and then charging $100 for a pair of jeans is really offensive to me) and also unbranded.
All in all, I read all labels before I buy the clothing and use kind of a "sliding scale" of criteria to determine if I'll buy them.

Glad to see other sweatshop-free consumers. Always seems weird that some animal-rights advocates don't care about people. But anyway.
I shop exclusively at secondhand shops now-- Value Village, and sometimes used clothing shops, although they tend to be much more costly. ($10 for a shirt? Are you kidding? Heh.)
Too bad hemp and organic cotton stuff is so expensive.

Just because someone doesn't avoid sweatshop products, doesn't mean they don't care about people, Mirko. Maybe it's the opposite.

I get most of my clothes from department stores, ala Sears, JcPenney's, etc. I also like to go to the ocassional goth shop and get something a little dreary. I have no idea as to whether my clothes are manufactured in sweatshops, nor do I know how to even access that information.

I buy the majority of my clothes second hand. I've bought a couple things on ebay. The only new clothes I ever buy are definitely made in the USA (socks and tshirts.)
I'd comment on your post, kp, but it's entirely OT and I can't even be arsed to spend the time to make a new thread dedicated to it.
