How can one tell the difference between a real leather belt, and a fake belt? Are real leather belts more expensive? I ask this only because I bought mine at wal-mart for $15.00 (Canadian), and if I've been wearing a real one, I will hang myself with it!
j/k, of course....

Most belts will have some kind of label on it saying if it's made from leather. Something like "genuine leather" imprinted somewhere on it--either that or the price tag/item tag might say something on it. If it is leather, when this belt wears out buy a pleather one or donate the one you have and buy a pleather one.

In the EU they have signs on labels on shoes etc, the one for leather looks like a hide.
Once I took back a pair of new shoes I bought for £5, having been assured they weren't leather at that price... but they were. Sometimes you can smell it, other times you have to have a surreptitious pick at an edge to see if it's solid leather or layers of notleather. I loathe shopping.

My belt is fake! Thank God! I bought it a few years ago, before I even knew what a vegan was, so I was kinda worried. Anyway, the belt has no "Genuine Leather" printed on it, plus I went to a website that gave tips on how to tell real from fake, and my belt matched the "fake" category. Thanks for helping me out, these boards are really helpful.

I got a nice belt from Vegetarian Shoes. It's holding up very well, and I'd say it's as sturdy as any leather belt I've ever had. I think it was about 22$ US, so it really wasn't all that expensive either. So when your wal-mart belt wears out (as it invariably will ;) ) get yourself one from Vegetarian Shoes.

You found a fake leather belt at Wal-Mart? I wish I could be so lucky. I'm not going to order a belt online, and I seem to have hell of a time finding one in a store.

Joffen, do you have a link for the site that helped you tell real from fake? :)

I found the site using Google. I must warn you though, the site sounds very "pro-leather", but I just ignored it, and used what I needed. Anyway, here's the site:

Hope this helps!

I have a belt which obviously isn't leather. It's one of thos ebelts which skateboarders wear. It's got the american flag on it, all the way round it. I got it because it looks funky. I don't really have any formal belts. i don't need them either. I've gone from a 32in waist to a 34 so all my old trousers now seem to fit me Ok, rathe rthan bein ga little baggy.
